Can anybody tell me if there is a gym in Pattaya that I can use on a per day basis, with no membership payments/restrictions.

I want to lift some weights and do some cycling, so probably a good hotel gym if they have a guest program.

I heard about one on beach rd called Universe, but I think that it does not have any A/C.

Any info including price details greatfully received!

Airconditioning? Surely Sir, surely you jest. The only gyms with A/C are the upscale ones that exist in BKK upscale hotels. In Pattaya it's more like the real deal.

The Universe gym on Beach road has lots of weights and some aerobic equipment. No A/C.

Siptholek on 2nd road, next to Sabai Room massage (near Big C) is geared toward Muay Thai training (A/C - What's that?). They do have basic weight equipment though not nearly as extensive as the Universe gym. If you just want an open space in which to move, this is the place to go. You'll realize though that Thailand is a poor country: the floor in this gym is just a thin rug laid on cement. None of this raised floating wood flooring or padded mats. That's for pussies! The punching bags are filled with sand and are as hard as concrete and must weigh several hundred pounds. I've trained in Karate for 25 years and no way can I kick these bags (It hurts!). And no way would I mix it up with a Muay Thai fighter. These guys are incredibly tough.

At the Siptholek (and I guess the other gyms) you go join on a daily, weekly, monthly basis. I like to do the 10-day pass (750 baht) as it doesn't have a time limit (if you don't use up all your days you can use it on your next trip to LOS).

thanks sabaidii2. Great info.

Only experience with no A/C was in a hotel, where they had a cycling machine in the same room as the pool, next to the jacuzzi. I usually bike about 45 minutes, but I was gapsing after 30 in that place.

Do you know what the prices are for the Universe?

"Do you know what the prices are for the Universe?"

No. I've only gone to Siptholek, but the prices, like everything in Thailand, are a bargain compared to the West, so don't be concerned about it. What you should be concerned about is dropping from the humidity as you've already experienced. Unless you're acclimated to those conditions, the best you can do is fairly light workouts.

I just remembered another gym on 2nd Road near Walking street. Look around or ask at your hotel.

Is the Siptholek still up and running or did it get caught up in the closure of The Weekender at the end of last/beginning of this month?

jnr,

I seem to recall that there is a nice air-conditioned gym at the Royal Garden Plaza shopping center, or at least there used to be. Not exactly in-expensive, but quite well appointed.

I don't know, but I'll be in town next week. I'll really be bummed out if they are closed because part of the appeal of the Sabai Lodge is Siptholek's location.

Another great reason to go to a gym is that it'll save you a hell of a lot of money. I've discovered, through years of extensive field investigation, that once you stay out of gogos, Thailand is pretty cheap. In fact, staying out of bars is incredibly cheap. Did you know that you can get a nice meal in a A/C sit-down restauant for the price of a couple lady drinks? I didn't know this amazing fact until I noticed the contents of my wallet shrinking at an appalling rate.

Just for some variety (you really won't save any money) go to Tony's Disco and see what you can pull. I like it because it takes some effort on my part and there's no guarantee of success. (In case of failure, you can always bop on down to Soi 7/8.)

I have yet to find a non hotel gym in pattaya that didn't completely suck. That includes all those mentioned in this thread.

The Hard rock's gym is minimal but okay, the marriots gym is modern equipment but a joke.

 2guns

There is a gym at the Royal Garden with aircon and plenty of equipment. Its a high class place and rather more expensive than the Universal.

These are interesting posts. I have never even considered spending any time on my holiday lifting weights or riding the stationary bike-chasing for tg and slamming beer for me is what holidays are all about. Is lifting 12 ounces repetitively considered a workout? Jimmy

No Jimmy, but if your shagging a few hours a days, and I don't mean laying on your back and letting your TG do all the work, that would be a good workout. :D

Brother Emil. I'm not afraid to do some work. Hell, my ex laid there like a stump for 17 years whilst I had the bed springs a rockin.

Now, I make sure before I pay bar on a tg that she's got swivel hips ala Elvis in his hey day-and she will not be leaving the building after a 45 minute performance.

43 more and wheels up. J

Jeez Jimmy, what took you so long?

I'm sure if a TG laid there like a stump for 17 minutes in LoS you'd have her out the door and another employee installed within the next 17 minutes. :D

Sometimes i'm at Chevin Gym on Soi Day Night, off Sth Pattaya Rd.

No A/C, but it's a good place, 3 levels, quite roomy. And there's pussies everywhere (I mean pet cats, get yo minds outta da gutter) :o

On my first day I did use the gym at the bottom of Soi 8, bugger it was hot and humid but I was determined that the beer would not spoil the my hard gained. The gym was very well equiped for body building, and some nice girls were training and quite serioulsy.

That was my one and only session too little time to waste, er....far better workouts followed.

It is my sad duty to report that the Siptholek gym is no more as it has apparently fallen victim to The Weekender hotel renovation.

sabaidii2,

I don't like the Universal Gym on Beach Road, it isn't a bad place but it is always too crowded. I like to go a gym where there is no people, I work out at Gold's in Vegas at midnight when noone is there. Actually I'm leaving in a few minutes. :chogdee There is a gym in Jomtien called Hard Body that I like to use, it is 3 stories, a few businesses to the right of KR bar, no AC (which I like) but there are ceiling fans and you can pay by the day but you are better getting a 10 day or 2 weeks deal. Here is a picture:

The heat is a problem in Thailand. Serious walking is impossible, so for me a daily session on a walking/running ramp is essential to compensate. It would seem from previous replies that you need to go upmarket to use a satisfactory gym. Rather than this I stayed recently at Areca Lodge, and found the gym there was pretty good. I have stayed previously in the Markland, and found the gym there was also good.

The Gym at royal garden is the same as the Marriot Hotel Gym. Modern equipment but not close to being a full gym. The universe gym on beach road has weights but missing anything like elliptical trainers. As I recall they have treadmills and that is about it for that type of equipment. Worked out there and it was hot!! I was soaked in sweat after the first set. :kissing

I was just checking out the Pattaya map at bahtbus.com, and I noticed that the stretch of road between S. PAttaya Rd. and Residence Garden is fairly long. Could you point out some identifying markers for a little more precision?

The Pattaya Expats Club makes mention of this gym also.

As you go from the intersection of Third Road and Pattaya South along Third road toward the RG, it is on the right hand side about 100 meters from the intersection.

Cheers
