One thing I forgot to clarify is that if coverage is patchy (dropped calls etc) it is still quite possible to send and receive SMS even if voice is not possible..

Each operator can set the threshold to whatever they want...You should ask your sevice provider in the UK what their settings are...it may even depend on where your own HLR is i.e. where you first register....and is it where you buy your SIM or where you first activate it.??...i.e. buy SIM in London but put it in your phone in Glasgow and switch it on.. Good question...let me know the answer...

Yes it is quite a worry...Chiang Rai has quite good coverage with AIS..I know because I built most of it... However if he is out and about it could be patchy....as somebody else has said....send him an SMS he may receive it straight away..if not he will get it when he switches on or gets back into coverage... Oh the horror...the horror.... of internet banking. Both my UK banks have introduced a call back system whenever you need to add a new recipient....i.e. they call you back immediately after you have tried to add somebody new to transfer money to......They must have enjoyed talking to my 90 year old Mother trying to explain what they wanted....

Individual Base stations and their associated BSCs have their own capacity limitations so it wouldn't need the whole network to go down on Mothers day for his mate to be unreachable in a small Northern village......I couldn't phone my wife all day on Friday......Not quite sure what the capacity is on the BTS covering our village but for sure each of the households would have been receiving calls from BKK...and most probably Patts...

Another one......why are photos together so important for visas.?????.me and the missus don't carry a bloody camera around with us....We do however have stamps in our passports showing residency (for me) and a dependancy (for her) in 3 seperate countries covering 7 years.. What realy..REALLY pisses me off is when me and the missus are heading into town on a shopping trip and she tells me to hurry up....only to get to her Mother's house to sit there and wait 30 minutes whilst we wait for her to get ready as slowly as she bloody well likes..!! When they come around the house they sit on their motor cys and beep beep beep and beep and beep and BEEEEEEEEEP for us to open the gate...Its on rollers FFS ...Why cant they just push it open themselves... Don't know how much or what you are using it for but one thing to consider is that your bank will have a record of a bank transfer showing money originating outside of the country. In case you want to transfer back out of the country, buy an apartment or use it as funds for a visa etc...

In my experience Best Supermarket wine shop by Dolphin roundabout will sell any amount at anytime...except Bhudda and voting days...same same villa market...but Best is best for price..
