Fair enough the AUD has dropped a lot in value to the baht since then but I agree with previous poster - do not rush in - Thai tourism and airlines are suffering badly right now and good chance prices will drop in New Year particularly now they have competition from Air Asia.

If you do not mind a little bit away from the main action, I received email from Sea Orchid Pratamak Soi 5 a couple of days ago. Rooms from 1000baht per night - 50% or more below normal rates. I stayed there last year and would highly recommend especially at this rate.

Had no trouble booking at all from Australia using Visa card. Only problem was when tried to change flight within 24 hours of departure which they would not do online - needed to do through one of their agents.

They had same offer from Melbourne a few weeks back - not sure if still available. No catches at all but "free flights" were only on days of their choice. My Malayasian M'8 from work booked flights for June'09. Used Agoda to book hotel in Manila last month. Not a problem although after booking I discovered hotel had much better rates booking direct with them online.

Stayed there 2 weeks in November last year and I would highly recommend the place. One of those membership type deals - become a member (minimal fee but cannot remember the exact amount) and get around 250 baht per night off the room rate. As you say, a bit out of the way and you would need own transport, like walking or be prepared to pay a bit extra for buses/bikes. Would not recommend restaurant but plenty of other good food places nearby and quite handy to the beach. Cannot advise on joiner fees as we booked in as a couple but I would be highly surprised if there was any charge. I would not hesitate returning to the Sea Orchid.

My record over the past few years is about 50/50 in making to the Roo Bar in Walking St or staying in hotel room to watch.
