  1. Once upon a time, I sent a postcard from Phuket to the USA. I was on a one month vacation. I got home a week or two before the postcard arrived.
  2. I wonder how well the Wi-Fi works? I have an I-Pod Touch that won't pick up Wi-Fi for shit. And yet my MacBook Pro works just fine fairly far from the Wi-Fi router. As for the IPad itself? I don't see the point, really.
  3. Depending on what you order, the food can be OK. It's all horribly expensive, though. A little tiny mug of beer can be 150 baht. A sandwich can be 300-400 baht. Some items are even more. In short, you could drop in for lunch, have a few beers, and end up spending almost 1000 baht.
  4. I've been by there both in the daytime and at night. I wouldn't worry too much about the location, other than the fact that parts of that street can get a little muddy when it rains a lot. As for the hotel itself, the few reviews I've read seemed to be a mixed bag. I suppose the place would be worth a try if the price was right.
  5. Most hotels in Pattaya don't cost that much in the first place. What would you save, possibly? A few baht? On the other hand, if you're staying at an expensive place, it might be worth your while to look around for a good rate.
  6. Well, it can't go on forever, then, right?
  7. The way I look at it, someone is willingly paying those guys that money. Why shouldn't they take it? The club owners must be making money on the deal, right?
  8. I just did the 5:55AM Delta flight the other day. The plane to Tokyo is an Airbus and the seats are fairly comfortable, even in economy. You'll have your own entertainment center. However, I was less than impressed with the crappy 747 I took to Detroit for the next leg of the trip. Small, uncomfortable seats, no personal entertainment center, crappy food, etc. In other words, the trip from hell. 6 1/2 hours to Tokyo and 12-13 hours to Detroit. As for the midnight arrival? No problem with that. Your body clock says it's noon or so, so you'll bee good to go that night, even late.
  9. That's what I mean. Let's say you're down on Walking Street until 3AM. You take the baht bus back to Soi 6, but by then the place is deserted except for a bunch of ladyboys who are up to no good.
  10. In other words, if you're staying on Soi 6, you'd better go to bed early!
  11. What I've always wondered about Soi Six is what it's like very late at night? The daytime is no problem, but what is it like at 3AM? And how do you get into the Queen Vic late at night? Through the back door? What is that Soi like late at night?
  12. I walk by those places that sell suitcases all the time, but I never really pay any attention. My first inclination was to say 1000 baht, but that seemed kind of cheap, so I said 2000 baht. Actually, for a good suitcase, even 2000 baht would be a good deal. I've got some sort of a backpack on wheels with a detachable day pack that I bought in the states for $275. That's almost 9000 baht.
  13. Off the top of my head, I'd say 2000 baht should do it.
  14. Are you saying that's the cheapest flight you can find? $3000? Or the cheapest EVA? What's wrong with Thai Air at $1800? Is that Premium Economy?
  15. I think Jesus was probably a good guy. Somehow, though, the Catholic church latched onto the concept and screwed it all up. Now, they want people to believe they're going straight to hell for even thinking about sex. Not exactly a way to recruit new members, is it? I'm not sure what Jesus would think about Pattaya. For all I know, he'd have his headquarters somewhere on Soi 6. That reminds me. Has anyone ever seen a monk on Soi 6, blessing all the bar girls before they start their day? I wish I had had my camera that day.
  16. Wow. With that budget you can stay just about anywhere. I know what I'd do, but then again, I'm a Cheap Charlie when it comes to hotel rooms. Take a look at Latestays.com or Agoda.
  17. The first time I looked at my HD TV in full HD (1080p) via a Blu Ray movie disc, it was sort of distracting. The picture was so good I almost forgot to watch the movie.
  18. Fortunately, there are plenty of reasonable places to stay in Pattaya. If one place doesn't work out, just go next door! I suppose it can get to be a pain in the ass, though, if you have a lot of luggage.
  19. I think they're already on the market. At least Best Buy in the USA has one advertised. Some sort of an LED/3D set that they want in excess of $3.5K for. But if you just stick with the LED models, the sets are about $1K cheaper. Since I've never seen a 3D TV in action, I'm not sure what to think about them. I realize the potential is there, but do they perform? And if you have to wear some sort of glasses to watch, then why not build the 3D TV right into the glasses and forget about the set?
  20. Butler made it all the way to the final game. I'm not sure how they'll do against Duke, though. Anyway, the people in Indianapolis are having fun.
  21. For what it's worth, here's a picture of the place a few years ago, when they were still building it. It's the big tall building. Looking down Second Road towards Big C.
  22. 500 baht per night sounds OK. The location is halfway decent. I'm not sure about construction noise, though. It could be that many of the units in the building are being fitted out, so you might have to deal with that kind of noise.
  23. I doesn't look like it's worth 1000 baht, if you ask me. And that's supposed to be a "deal"?
  24. Only $6000? I know a guy who just had to have a new flat panel when they first came out. This was back in about 1999 when the internet stocks were going crazy and everyone was making money like crazy. Anyway, he paid $18,000 for a 42" Panasonic flat screen, and it wasn't even HD.
  25. Yesterday, the Queen Victoria cruise ship was docked in Patong. Apparently, they were supposed to dock elsewhere on Phuket but either the boat was too big or the cruise line was trying to keep it's passengers from being ripped off for the long and expensive cab rides to Patong or elsewhere on the island. From what I could see, the passengers going ashore were getting into mini buses as soon as they arrived, so I'm not sure how many of the local cab drivers actually made a killing. And for what it's worth, that ship looked pretty neat. It's currently on an around the world cruise. Exp
