Cambodian VisaRuns suspended !
tallguy replied to Idefix's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
But if you hadn't had the work permit you would likely have gone the retirement route so would not have had to do the 90 day visa run, just the 90 day reporting. (I think I am correct in assuming that you were over 50 when you moved to Thailand)(edited for typos). -
BUDGET FARANG MEALS: 99bt specials, Malee S. Honey, your faves?

Soi 4 is probably about 5 minutes walk from the traffic lights at the junction of Thappraya Road and Pratumnak. There are motorbikes around if you don't fancy the walk. -

I haven't eaten at the Ferret for a while but haven't heard anything bad about it either. The steak and kidney pudding special on a Thursday was my favourite there.? -

Not the biggest portion of fish and chips that I have ever had but filling enough. I couldn't eat a UK size portion anymore. -

While you're at D apartments there's a place behind the currency exchange, on the corner just south of Wok n Rok,that advertises ribs from 49 baht. The 49 baht portion only contains three ribs but you can pay more for larger portions. There's a decent amount of meat on the ribs, they are quite tender and the sauce is tasty. Maybe not the best ribs you will ever eat but good value. Cafe Pittini is also another good place in that area. Specials start from about 149 baht rather than 99 baht but the food is good for the price. The place is well run and always seems to be doing good business when I go in. They do excellent coffee and the paninis are good for a change. -

My Dental experience
tallguy replied to BeerBelly's topic in Doctors, Dentists, Clinics and Hospitals
Most of the clinics offer teeth whitening, most of which advertise prices for laser whitening. Never investigated any further than noticing prices advertised so can't give a recommendation. Prices seem to start around 5k baht from memory. -

Another place to consider for your budget farang meals, (if you haven't already heard of it or been there), is Frydays on New Plaza which has a good reputation. A UK style chippy with fish (dory) and chips starting from 99 baht. If your walking down from Soi Buakhao, its in one of the shop houses on the right hand side of New Plaza near second road. I'm not sure of his opening hours but don't think he opens until about 4pm. Bon appetit TG -

Andy, have you tried Friar Tuck on Soi Lengkee? It's on the left hand side as you walk up from Soi Buakhao, maybe 20 or 30 metres past Steak & Co and Jolly Friar. Its a bit of a greasy spoon but good value. The Thai food is better than the falang food. Bon appetit. -
Cucumber Restaurant and Pub on Pattaya Tai
tallguy replied to Evil Penevil's topic in Restaurants and food
Stick to Thai food there Mr Capdagde I saw a truly awful picture of a breakfast from there the other day which was 285 baht, (wtf). Definitely wouldn't order eggs Benedict from there. -
It's a couple of years since I read these books and they had slipped my mind when I made my initial contribution to this thread. They are definitely worth a read and the movie sticks fairly closely to the plot. I'd read the books before watching the movie so knew what to expect. The pace of some Scandanavian drama can seem a bit slow if you are used to faster paced American movies but it's worth sticking with them.

Maybe a case of numerical dyslexia

MM, I wouldn't describe the Burdett books as cerebral. There's a slightly comic element to the Somchais struggle for some sort of Bhuddist purity and the corruption of the world he operates in. There are also the occasional culture clashes when outside agencies such as the FBI become involved in his cases. They might not win any literary prizes but I have found them to be entertaining. I've read a couple of Leather's 'Jack Nightingale' books and thought they were OK despite my initial reservations about the plot. I suppose if you couldn't get into the Nightingale books then you might not enjoy the supernatural undertones of the Connolly books.

Exactly

That's in line with the rates at all the other booths. Haven't seen anywhere else higher than about 53.3.
-
As I said 2 baht higher than anywhere else. I wonder how long it stayed up.
-
Saw this on in a TT booth on second road yesterday. More than 2 baht higher than any other booth but thr girl on the counter reckoned it was correct. Pity I didn't have any sterling on me to change. Mai bpen rai:)

If you like Bernard Cornwell you might want to try the Sharpe books which are set during the Napoleonic era. A lot of them were made into TV films. Cornwell also presented a documentary series called 'Sharpe's War' which looked at the history behind the stories. I also like Nelson de Mille and John Connelly. Connelly has written a series of books about a former NYPD detective who returns to his native New England after his wife and daughter are murdered. There is a dark side to the books and he has a couple of interesting sidekicks. I'm not a big fan of Stephen King but enjoyed 'Under the Dome' which is much better than the TV series. The Stephen Leather novels are also entertaining, some of them have a Thai connection and some don't. I like the John Burdett books, 'Bangkok Eight', 'Bangkok Tattoo' etc. These books follow the adventures of a Thai detective who tries to stay clean despite his background: his mother is a former bargirl who runs a bar which is owned by his boss, a police colonel who is also a major heroin dealer. Re the Kindle. I bought a Kindle Fire last time I was in the UK but use it more as a tablet than an e-reader. I found that it overheated when I am reading by the pool or on the balcony so I still read more 'real' books. Another factor is that I like browsing around bookshops, I doubt if I would have picked up the De Mille or Connolly books if I was just relying on Amazon searches.

I know.

I mentioned the special because the best places to buy fish and chips from are those that have a high turnover which means the oil is kept at a consistent temperature. In a lot of restaurants and bars this is more likely to happen when fish and chips is on their special board.
-
Yes, midlife, near the second road entrance to New Plaza,on the left hand side next to the Golden Ferret, which is also worth considering for the fish and chip special on Fridays.
