New cheap airline from UK

Recommended Posts

Just a note for the brits that there appears to be a new airline flying from Manchester and Birmingham to Bangkok for £275 + tax

Just one problem. You have to change planes in Tehran, Iran

With George Bush circling like a man with loads of weapons that he would just love to try and Iraqi airspace oh so close, I will be giving this a miss I think, and I like a bargain

O come on - You will be at risk for only a couple of hours, and it makes it to Bangers most of the time...

I made what was an unscheduled refueling stop in Tehran last year when I was flying on Ariana Afghan Airlines from Kabul to Istanbul. Thaey didn't even let us off the aircraft during refueling so I have no idea what the airpot is actually like, but you can count on no alcohol! :wtf When the airport staff came aboard the aircraft the first words out of their mouth were, "no pictures". The international airport is also used by the Iranian Air Force and their ideas of security there are different than most places. We didn't see a lot of armed security walking around but you could feel that they were there. There weren't too many people moving around anywhere either it was actually kind of eerie.

Its called Mahan Air or Mahon Air.

on flightseverywhere.co.uk you can find them.

Will be sticking with Etihad myself

Yes, Mahon Air... they also come up with the cheapest Biz Class fares too! Anybody know whether you can get a nice glass of Brut before take-off and whether they use Bombay Sapphire in the G&Ts??? :D

It's the times it doesn't make it to Bangkok that would worry me. I don't think Bush is stupid enough to try and take on Iran at the moment. He's got his hands full with Afghanistan and Iraq as it is.

There again ............. :clueless

The finest Iranian caviar as well, no doubt.

Under normal circumstances they wouldn't be most guys' first choice of airline but for a cheapie at Xmas or during August they would be OK. Certainly a better choice than going via Beijing, Moscow etc.

I used Biman once. Never, ever, EVER again. If they did tickets at £1 I wouldn't use them.

Dirty plane, outside and in, loose seat trays and toilet fittings all made me question the maintenance - if the interior is like that, what are the important bits like!

The transfer at Dhaka airport was a nightmare, the Thais can be awkward and disorganised, these guys seemed to have a policy to actively make life hard for foreigners.

The locals. They WILL NOT queue, they just push in (physically) and completely ignore you when you say anything. On the plane they were about as well behaved as your average uneducated hill farmer, even the stewardess couldn't control them.

The flight to Bangkok was held up for 90 minutes waiting for a connecting flight to arrive, I didn't think they could do that, what with schedules and all that.

On the plus side - yes, there was one - the food was the tastiest I've ever had on a plane (although some of the locals didn't agree, they THREW theirs on the floor). And the stewardesses were friendly and helpfully. I asked mine if all passengers were as badly behaved and she said "yes, they are very low class persons", I said "but aren't you Bangladeshi?", she said she was from a better part of Bangladesh. Lastly, I had 3 seats to myself on all legs.

Still, never, ever, EVER, again.

Actually I was treated very well on my departure at Bangladesh..I was travelling biz class on Gulf....personally escorted to the front of all the queues, then to a lounge area.

When I arrived the airport was bedlam......

I have seen Biman 'delayed' just too often on the flight info screens around the world...normally by many many hours. And hence would avoid them. Plenty of cheap flights about without traveling on crap like this.

Not any more there isn't. I just saw on the BBC that the UK has suspended Mahan Air citing safety and operational concerns. If you have paid for a ticket on them you need to start getting a refund and alternative.

I tend to agree. Although some people are driven by price only.

I like a bargain myself, but tend to avoid Aeroflot, Biman, Garuda etc....oh and this one too :banghead

Reading this thread got me wondering about what happened to Air Asia x.

They ordered some new A330s at the Paris air show and look to be starting up in the last quarter of 2008.

Watch this space.

I was searching for August flights & I was strongly considered flying with Mahan Air as the price Man-Bkk return was only £485 . Next cheapest was £612 & luckily I went for that instead . :eyecrazy
