What is the best hat for Thailand

Recommended Posts

Around San Francisco I always wear a baseball cap to keep the sun out of my eyes but in Thailand it always sticks to my head and I can't stand it. What type of hat do the hat sporting expats prefer? Something lightweight with a brim would be ideal.

I wear the hat (which is straw with a brim) to keep my face from burning from the sun as I burn easy. Agree about not wearing the hat inside and would also add that one wear a shirt when inside.

Self-answering questions. There's a good step forward for the board.

A better step forward would be for people like you to just keep your mouth shut if you don't have anything worthwhile to say or contribute.

Frankly, I am weary of seeing your constant attempts to police this board with covert meanings and intentions in your posts, indicating that your "smarter and better" than most.

I know it's bad etiquette to wear a hat inside, but I'm curious, why is it a disrespect to Veterans?

I wear the usual baseball cap style golf hat for golf, but for general wandering around at length I tend to go with a boonie hat:

I bought a wide brim bamboo woven hat from a vendor

between soi 3 and 4 on beach road. Local would pay about

25 baht. Lady started at 100 baht and we finally settled at

50 baht. I took it home with me; works like a charm.

If I remember it, I take my Panama hat. Perfect for the climate in LOS, protects well against the sun. The girls love to try it on!

Evil

It's the holidays, marcortez. So much anger is not good, and not good karma. Perhaps that is what wearies you?

That personal advice aside, I'm sure you can explain why you are entitled to write something that is totally off-topic and certainly not worthwhile - but "people like me" should not? It seems most anti-democratic.

Straw's great, and widely available. Panama gets more chicks. The boonie hat is wonderful because it's indestructible - wear it into the pool or sea.

I'd just point out that the back of the white person's neck is a real sun magnet. A lot of folks worry about a shirt with a collar before a hat, in fact.

A baseball cap works well enough when I am out on a boat..... on the right way around! I carry a small towel to wipe the brow now and then.

If it's even possible I'd like to get a straw hat with some style. No reason not to block the sun and grab the attention of the ladies.

What is a BOONIE hat?

Google Images is your friend.

The other great thing about a boonie hat is you can fold, roll it or just mash it and put it almost anywhere (yes, even there, I suppose). It's much harder to lose than any comparable hat.

in the military the mess decks (food service area) are where the bodies are collected in the event of casualties

it's a sign of respect to take off your hat when entering an area or establishment that serves food or drink.

I don't think that in Thailand anyone really knows much, and cares even less, about western traditions. Take your shoes off if it is appropriate but by all means leave your hat on.

Any hat will NOT keep you cool. Besides that, the sun doesn't shine at night. Wearing a hat at night makes everyone think you are trying to hide a bald head.
