if it is a locked region 2 player then it will not play thai dvd's however you can get a one shot remote that can make most dvd players multie region, i got one from a firm on e-bay, sorry cant remember the name but worked ok.

just found one, not the one i used bt will give you an idea what to look for, i think mine was one shot and cost about 12 pounds

Slight, vital correction, not counting the grammar ones.

If it is a locked Region 2 player then it will not play Thai DVDs

- WHICH ARE ALSO LOCKED -

Which almost no Thai DVDs are, but some definitely are Region 3.

Correct..I bought a DVD player here in LOS and was horrified to find out it was locked to region 3. I did a bit of research on the internet and there is some sequence you can do, plug it in while holding the power button whilst wearing a witches hat and standing on one leg...and presto, it is now multi region. (I have brought over quite a few DVDs from the UK which are region 2 locked).

The DVDs you buy in LOS are a mix, mostly no region lock (well the cheap ones) but now and again I find one that is. My problem then is that I cannot play it on my computer... the DVD drive is region locked and rather cleverly in the firmware in a way you cannot bypass with say DVD43.

It really is ridiculous that something designed to be portable and taken to other countries, like a laptop, is blocked to prevent you using some features overseas! Assholes!

I bought a separate DVD player here a Pioneer DV220 which plays both thai and english DVDs. Only 2000 baht and useful to have a spare DVD player.

The next question is why you'd bother packing a DVD player from England. Why not treat yourself to an 800 baht one from Thailand that will work with all disks from Thailand?

Have to agree that its better to get a cheap one hear rather than cart it around with you. I have found that the very cheap "region specific" DVD players sold in australia will play the thai dvd's, including the copy ones. I bought a Conia brand for $38 that works fine. Only the expensive units seem to be region coded.

In Sept 2009 bought a DVD player a Big C that came with surround sound speakers for 1100 baht. Left it with a friend.

In March we bought one from the the Big C for 870 baht and left this at the Cherry Bar as some one had tipped water on theirs.

Sept this year bought one from the Big C for 900 baht and we brought this one home with us.

Make sure you ask for one that plays copies which are in the cheaper range. I always by the cheaper one as it is only to watch DVDs while we are there, but the sale assistants will try very hard to get you to buy a dearer one.

The one I have here is a Focus MPEG4/DVD Player coping CD/MP3/MPEG4 to USB storage.

Plays DVD/MPEG4/SVCD/VCD/CDMP3/CD-R/RW/DVD+R/RW/DVD-R/RW/HDCD

Automatic Pal/NTSC system conversion

Multiple super error correction

Progressive scan output

192khz/24bit audio DAC

Built-in dolby digital decoder

wide range of power supplies

automatic short circuit protection

Full function karaoke.

This is just some of the things listed on the side of the box.

For Fathers day I bought my dad a mutli regional DVD player of the internet new for $40 au.

I bought it in Home Works Sukhumvit Road but they sell it in many big stores.

I agree with you. Australian DVD players are generally in region 4. it appears they phased out multi-region players a few years ago, to stop users to play cheap imported copies. Like you said the more expensive brands fall into that category. I went to a Harvey Norman store in Darwin and asked one of the young blokes how to overcome this problem. He pointed to a cheap Sony DVD player made in Malaysia and said it would play all DVDs from all regions. He was right. The cheap Sony DVD player cost me A$ 59.
