Seafood Prices in Pattaya

Recommended Posts

So on my recent trip I ate at some seafood place on Walking St. on Valentines Day. I think it was called Kiss, but not sure. They have a lot of outdoor seating right by the water and there's a circular water fountain inside with lots of lobsters in it. So I inquired about a plate of large prawns, about 5-6 on the plate from what the picture showed on the menu. Waitress tells me it's 1800 baht. I'm thinking that's $60 USD! Wow! That's pretty expensive I thought and also thought maybe I was being quoted the rich farang price. Then I inquired about the lobster and it's 3000 baht. That's $100 USD. Now, lobster does not cost that much even in the US, unless it's at a Chinese seafood restaurant where the lobsters are humongous and not your typical lobster you get in Red Lobster or even a fancy steak house. The price range for these super lobsters in higher end Chinese Restaurants can be $200-400 USD, but they are huge and special. I wasn't sure what kind of lobster the ones in this Walking St. restaurant was, but from what I saw they were mostly a lighter color than what I normally see back in the US, and not that big.

I seriously thought I was being quoted a higher price than what Thais would get quoted. But if I was certain that wasn't the case, and that's really the going price for seafood in Pattaya, I would have ordered either the prawns or the lobster. Hell it was Valentine's Day and I've got a fistful of baht. It was the thought of getting ripped off that I didn't like. Some things I can live with getting ripped off on, small things. However, somehow this felt different as I am very particular about my food. I would literally be eating and swallowing rip off prices if I was wrong, and that would be unacceptable.

So let me ask those of you who are familiar with this restaurant or the prices of seafood in Pattaya, was I being ripped off or was that really the going rate?

I can never understand this approach. If you really want something on your holidays, go get it. Now you'll be lying on your death bed one day in the far, far future and your last thought will be, "I still have $250. I should have had the lobster."

No I won't be on my deathbed thinking about that, I eat lobster and crab and all kinds of high end seafood all the time in the US. Truth be told the food and seafood in Thailand is pretty weak when compared to what I eat at home. Even the Thai food is better here. I live in the SF Bay Area and we have some of the best cuisine in the world, so it's not like I feel left out not ordering the lobster/shrimp. I'm just wondering if they were trying to rip me off, and I'm sure as hell not a Cheap Charlie if that's what's you're implying.

You can't have had a lot of experience eating seafood in Thailand if you're now having to ask what the prices should be. There are loads of great seafood restaurants in Thailand, including Pattaya and the surrounding area, but Walking St probably isn't the top of most folks' lists.

In what way?

There are several threads about the best places to eat seafood in the Pattaya area - a quick search should pull them up.

Or thank heavens I spent the $250 on something else, like cigarettes.... cough cough!

To the OP, yes the lobster and the tiger prawns are silly prices in the seafood restaurants over the sea on Walking St. Particularly on Valentines day, when filled with romantic sods who want to spend $250 before they die on their sweethearts. Prices have come a long way since I had a lobster dinner in 1985 for $20.

On regular days lobsters can go on special for 2000 baht. I use restaurants off the WS and things are much cheaper, although these days the big mud crabs and lobster can be a lot even at those places. They sell them where they can get the most, of course.

Even in the Thai community there are plenty of guys out to impress their gals.

Or just lots of guys and gals who like to eat "real" seafood. It's darned expensive. One of the three or four reasons that farmed stuff is taking over the market pretty much for anything that swims, sea or fresh water alike. The "real" stuff will cost you.

Go on to Jomtien Beach rd and drive right until the road ends and you will be right beside the best seafood restaurant around.

Prices are roughly a quarter of the amount you quoted.

You are correct. Much better choice. I think the place the OP is thinking of is King Seafood, not Kiss restaurant which is on 2nd road.

I regually use king seafood on WS with the tirak, usually have a fish with 3 or 4 side dishes including tiger prawns, with drinks it normally comes to around 2000 baht,I can handle that.

With reference to the seafood restaurant on Jomtien Beach Rd and cost, last month 7 of us went and let the girls order different seafood platters for all of us-never seen so much seafood.

Total bill including couple of Beers each was 3480 baht !

I've had no experience with seafood prices in Thailand, that's why I'm asking. I said I eat a lot of seafood in the USA, and IMO the Thai food is better in the USA as well, at least where I'm from where we have a Thai community.

Is this the place that have lots of tables and chairs on the beach, across the road from the actual restaurant, and the serving staff have to run the gauntlet of traffic to serve a mean to them?

I'm never sure which place people are talking about when they say to go to the end of the road, but this place, "Lung Sai", is at the very end of the road before it heads east.

The kitchen is across the street from the restaurant, but there didn't seem to be much traffic when I was there.

Here's a picture of their front entrance http://www.pattayaphotoguide.com/?t6YRUgGvkcuC8CAA

The price of seafood in Pattaya is a fucking rort dejoure!

You want good seafood, at the real price, go to Bangsaen or Sattahip. :clueless

I know you are a Chonburi man, but it soulds like you know a few places......

Sattahip, too far for me, Bang Saen, correct side of Pattaya but still a bit far... have they finished those damned roadworks between Banglamung and Laem Chabang yet? Know anywhere good between Banglamung and Sri Racha? There are a few coming out of Pattaya on Rt3, beach side before 36 junction. I use one right on Sukhumvit which does a Tom Yam Khung to die for. Plently of places down on the beach there but a bit hit and miss on quality... yet are influenced by Pattaya prices. Just might be good to try going North... (my last attempt found a little place in Laem Chabang but pretty mediocre).

Always looking for dining alternatives that avoid driving in Pattaya....

Not much of a choice in Laem Chabang. The Pop right along the ocean road in Sriracha is a good place for a feed, with reasonable prices. I never bother with those little out of the places along Sukky heading North from Pattaya. Angsila is the best for good food and good pricing.

Sorry mate, I am actually sitting on Bangsaen beach right now having seafood. It's the wife's b-day today.

Angsila is straight North up the cost from Bangsaen about 10 minutes.

I think the place Randy and a few others are talking about is called Bpu Bpen (live crab)

It has a large blue swimming crab outside and the qulity there is BLOODY excellent.

I was there 2 nights ago with the big-fella and our girls, great feed and the cost was reasonable considering.

The Walking Street seafood restaurants now seem to be all owned by Russians and the prices are touristy with lousy quality. I refuse to grace their doors again. Most of them appear to be owned by the King seafood chain.

The other PRIME place for seafood is Sinuan at Na Jomtien.

It's expensive but has a huge variety and the quality is A1.

I'll be running dinner cruises down there in a few months so call me if you're interested. We anchor in the nearby harbour and deliver customers to the restaurant by jetski. Done a few as trials and it was a great night out.

Cheers :D: Admiral Ken
