Alternative to using expensive condo wifi service

Recommended Posts

Hi chaps,

Just recently moved into VT2 condo here in Jomtien, for a 3 month stay, but find the inet wifi is an expensive extra cost at 450bt card(sawasdee wifi card) for just 30 hrs!!

Are there any alternatives to this as use the inet a bit and no way 30hrs is enough for a months use for me as this could end up costing me couple cards a month and at 450bt a card is exp!!

Whats the option of aircard would that be an alternative??

Thanks & any suggestions welcome,

Cheers 4 now,

You connect via your mobile phone.

One 2 call (AIS) offer Edge/GPRS packages about 10 baht/hr.

Both DTAC and AIS have unlimited data plans for about 800b/mo.

One of the joys of pattaya is that I spend the minimum time on a computer,

E-mails and banking and thats about it.

I dont bother with the forums as I am living it.

Normally log on at a coffee place that does free wi-fi

if you need it for work of course another matter.

turn the fcuk thing off.

Those Edge packages are very slow - Hutch would be much faster at about 1.5Mb/s.

Malakor do you have personal experience with the 3G packages from Hutch?

The Edge/GPRS is very slow correct. They are quoting speeds of 2.4Mbps on their website, is this figure realistic and what area can you maintain this?

Any info from anyone with experience would help as we need something faster for the boat.

The 2.4mbps service has very limited coverage.

A friend has Hutch in his Wong Amat condo and averages about 1.5Mb/s, though with a download accelerator it's about 2Mb/s. Best to inquire at the Hutch shop (next to Tukcom) and if necessary they will send an engineer out to your place to check the speed.

Another friend lives very close to the Floating Market and also averages the same speeds with the same package.

Thanks, will go in and talk to them tomorrow and report back for anyone interested.

It's going to be interesting to see the look on their face if they want to send an emgineer when I tell them that we want it to work BETWEEN here and the other side of Koh Larn LOL

Not much help to your present predicament but next consider renting a condo where wifi is provided free of charge.

Can't you top it up (although probably not at that bargain price)?. It is just a SIM card inside afterall.

Jacko, yes I can but I leave for two months in philippines just b4 it expires so will look around when I get back. The regular packages seem to be based on download useage and are quite expensive in comparison. will try to get another special package.

I know my AIS internet access used to offfer these various packages which were normally time rather than data quantity... so you could get a single day unlimited, or 3 days or 7 days, these are good for filling those gaps between trips.

Could one of you techie types tell me something, please.

Are dongles all the same, just the SIM cards different? I have an unused dongle here in the UK. Can I bring it to Pattaya and just buy a SIM card to put in it?

Thanks.

I don't think it is that simple...

My UK dongle, for example, came with software on it to connect to O2 and had some pretty useless network selector that had to be loaded.

Also your dongle might be 3G specific and 3G isn't really going here yet.

By all means try it.....

But one thing I do know. You don't have to have a dongle, a mobile phone works in Thailand readily. Your mobile (EG a Sony), comes with PC Suite, and there is an option to connect to the internet in there... covering any country (except didn't work in UK.. :grin-jump ) . You would need then to buy a 'bolt on' for the network...It would be Edge/GPRS, slow speeds but sufficient to keep up with emails.

Bazle, I am not at all a techie type but fortunately I met up with one on another pattaya board. I brought my locked Huawei dongle from oz with me and he unlocked it for me. type in Unlock and the name of your dongle into google and see if there is a software program to unlock it, that is what he did.
