Those black people, always doing that. Right wac?   .

If you saw the ladies final from the US Open, you'll no doubt have an opinion about the decision of Umpire Eva Asderaski to apply the 'Hinderance rule' to a clearly heard, early shout of triumph from

Definitely the most important part of it worth noting. I don't know why they even allow black people to play. You'd never catch white people doing anything disrespectful. Black ladies have no idea of

Why should she apologize? Tennis needs more people like this. Many more. I personally enjoy playing tennis. And do quite a bit. But to make it something I can watch on tv, it needs some entertainment value. Serena brings it. If the judge can't take it, she can stay home.

I don't believe our paths have crossed before.............So forgive me if I suspect your view may not be sincerely held. Perhaps you could elaborate as to why you feel that there isn't sufficient drama in a US Open final. ...? And importantly why an increase in squalid abuse and acrimonious incidents would enhance the viewing pleasure of people like yourself?

Hmmm. There is this alternate universe where mrlasvegas and joekicker agree on stuff. And we're right in the middle of it.

Beam me up Scottie, but not right now, I think I'm going to enjoy the next few dozen posts where the genteel, sensitive folks who hold their little finger out even when they drink beer try to stick it to the totally correct mrlasvegas.

.

Unlike Mr 'LOS' Vague ous.........Or paths have crossed before Joe. I have enough respect to know that ........As one of the tennis world's greatest players put it ....before he threw his dummy out the pram "You cannot be serious"

"I'm going to award a point against you Mr. McEnroe"

And the crowd cheers :thumbup

I wonder how long till golfers start yelling at officials.

Cheats? clueless.gif I don't know which was more pathetic - Williams attempt at cheating, or the crowds reaction to her getting called on it.

The crowd did abet Williams.......And abetted MacEnroe in his day ........sickening.

My opinion!

People can see that sort of shit on Jerry Springer. They watch tennis to see top quality tennis.

No offense, but it's that attitude that's causing problems in society. Not sure what Vegas is like, but in the UK , everybody seems to get abuse for just doing their job, from shop assistants to teachers, bus drivers to car park attendants t5o nurses to fire men. People shouldn't be abused, end of. That umpire did nothing to get physically threatened / bullied by a powerful athlete.

Both yer'sel and CT are from Scotland I believe.

You may have read, or even seen footage of Tommy Walker ( Hearts and Scotland) who's name became a byword for sportsmanship in an age when sporting gestures were applauded..... but were expected as the norm. It was said that, "the dirtiest thing in football is a foul on Tommy Walker"

If somehow the God of Football resurected the great man, and stuck him in a box at a Premiership match .....he would I'm sure marvel at the speed of movement and the skills displayed but I'm equally certain he would be sickened by the shirt tugging, the feigned injuries, the double toe-loops in the penalty area and abuse of Referees. He wouldn't have cut it in today's game.....I don't think he would have wanted too!

Scots in the main laughed at Maradona's "Hand of God" because it was at England's expense......Less so at the, 'Henri handball' that filched the pockets and the careers of a deserving Rep Ireland side. Maybe karma saw to France in that World Cup! As the Thais say 'Tam dee dai dee, tam chua dai chua. '

There are still some sporting players in relatively recent times..............Lineka never a yellow or a red card in a successful, (ten goals in a world cup), top class career He comes to mind. I'm sure there are others.

There are still sporting crowds........

In 1989 Liverpool at home only needed to avoid a 2 0 loss against Arsenal to win the league. They played defensively and lost the second goal right at the death. I was at Anfield that day. A Liverpool supporter at that time.......I remember that the crowd, to a man stayed to applaud Arsenal's lap of honour. In the pub afterwards there was absolutely no one who didn't say we brought it on ourselves and couldn't complain about it ......... I was very proud of that! (None of them were drinking beer with their little fingers crooked, Joe).

You don't have to be effete, or light in the loafers to be 'Suparb barroote' or a gentleman Joe!.............Our kids need more examples of 'sporting role-models' to look up too. And less not more like Serena!

Hi,

Good post. We want good sportsmen/women. The colour of their skin is irrelevant.

Good post! Any decent response would probably be made over a couple of bottles of red on a Saturday night. Where to start ....... ?

Ah, yes - Tommy Walker. He was actually the Hearts manager by the time I became a regular at Gorgie in 1964/65, but his reign over the glory days of the late 50s/early 60s was coming to an end. To be fair, he was aware that no team could comprise 11 gentlemen, hence his signing and development of players such as the great Dave Mackay and Alex Young. However, he did sign Donald Ford who, avoided being booked during his entire playing career (one booking he did get was thrown out on appeal - something to do with being a bit too accurate when throwing the ball to/at the ref. The booking was overturned when it was pointed out that he was also a cricketer of some repute).

Scots didn't laugh at Maradona's "Hand of God". They laughed at the English media's attempts to use it as an excuse to gloss over the little man's brilliant second goal.

Enjoy ..... cheers.gif

Mmmmmm, Lineker! Makes Berbatov look like a fucking workaholic. It's no wonder he never got booked. He never dirtied his shorts either - well, except for the time he shit himself against the Irish.

You're conveniently glossing over the fact that the behaviour of football crowds in general, and Liverpool in particular, was under the spotlight post Hillsborough (the actual game had been delayed because of the events in Sheffield IIRC) and the Arsenal team had made presentations to the Liverpool fans before the game.

Regarding the tennis now on TV. I find the men's game boring. With the speed and accuracy of the serves it has got to the stage that when there is even a basic 4 shot rally the crowds start to get excited.,,,

With the women's game there tends to be more rallies and I find that more interesting to watch.....and also there are more chances to see different faces in the final games...

Yes, the world DOES pay attention to the UK - especially English - football supporters. We do. We have for quite a few decades.

You mean the goal where nobody would go near him becuase they were on a yellow card from his rediculous diving before...Or do you think it is more sportsmanlike of Billy Bremner to kick shit out of Pele...???

FFS! If you're going to jump in, at least try and get to grips with reality beforehand.

1. One player (Fenwick) was on a yellow card. It was his third yellow card of the tournament and he, as well as the aptly named Butcher, were lucky not to be sent off after various assaults on Maradona.

As for "rediculous diving" ... around 8' 50" is the offending dive.

I don't know why Atlas brought up an incorrect claim , but let's not start a silly argument. Tom explained that any laughing is because it's still getting bleated about. You lost fair and square and have had bad decisions go for you in world cups.

Fenwicks foul was as bad as his earlier shot, and Maradona's 2nd goal was one of the best ever. I saw the manager talk about on TV, Robson, a true gent, paid homage to Maradona;s skill and I have never heard anyone say they were scared to tackle him.

None of it has anything to do with the tennis outburst!

My claim (I had to think as to what it was), may be incorrect.....If you can put your hand on your heart and swear on your life, and your guitars that there wasn't the slightest inward feeling of 'fecking great' at Maradona's 'Hand of God goal and Peter Shilton's distress in the Obsession clan that day, or in any of the Glasgow pubs that had the set on...........Well then, I must accept what you say and I will withdraw the claim. Which wasn't meant unkindly anyway!

You're right of course to point out that we've strayed away from tennis....absolutely no connection between Scottish/England football rivalries and top flight tennis.............Apart......... from .......Andy Murray's "Anyone but England,' comment! Sorry, but I'll need a lot of convincing that 'that' sentiment failed to strike a chord and draw a few laughs north of the border. ...........You can see why we're so paranoid!

Seriously, I think the football references have just come about because of the disrespectful behaviour of the players towards referees ......You find this in almost all sports nowadays. Even where abuse like Serena's towards the umpire isn't present, say in a sport like athletics, athletes are cheating each other and themselves with drugs.

Having said all that..........Sport today still has heroes for us to admire. Still has breathtaking skills to marvel at. Still displays, courage and sacrifice and determination and indomitable will. Still grabs our attention and involvement in the spectacle like nothing else. Can still make us in turn, weep and caper in excitement.

Serena's always saying "I just feel so blessed" Well she has been! Millions in the bank, fame, respect bordering on honeyed sycophancy........ The world of tennis literally at her feet.

I just wish she really acted like she was blessed.......Then maybe she wouldn't be so cursed!

Why wouldn't there by a certain pride displayed in Glasgow's pubs as a result of the Argentinians' success. After all, their Football Association has its roots in the Gorbals. cheers.gif Why do you think they enjoy beating the English so much. whistling.gif

Funnily enough, last week I was thinking about the point, for me, at which sport changed for the worse. I came up with 1984. I had lots of sporting heroes then - Thompson, Coe, Cram, Ovett, Lewis, Moses. Sheesh, even Torvill and Dean were sporting heroes from a more innocent era. However, it also heralded the arrival of Flo-Jo and her ilk and it's been downhill ever since angry.gif

I only took the Chinese girls pics because their outfits reminded me of Argentina's footie strips. The trouble with them though is an hour after you've had one, you fancy another. whistling.gif

TBH mate, I can't see the logic that thew very few Scots " English haters" would have enjoyed a goal that was a cheat. Would they not have preferred a nutmeg, back heeler type of goal, rather than a goal that the English could use as an excuse? Imho, you lost 1 - 0 to a team that is genuinely to this day, usually top 5 in the world. And it was in one of their heydays. And it was only to a wonder goal by the greatest footballer ever. I am honestly surprised that the English still bring up that other goal. They are kidding themselves on if they thought they were better than that Argie side.

Andy Murray.

I am embarrassed by his comments. He was young and hopefully he was goaded into it by clever journalists. They ask, hoping that someone says they want England to lose. English haters are a tiny minority as far as I know. Maybe Highlanders hate them, but they hate everybody! Especially Glaswegians. A guy from Keith, near Aberdeen ish, told me in Pattaya , that Glaswegian ruined Scotland lol. What a nice friendly chappie he was to meet on holiday!

From music to the premiership and comedy to English family and friends, I think the English are top drawer :thumbup

OK you have a point with the logic thing, I can see that 'that' indeed would've been marginally better from a Highlander's, 'Aly's Army' point of view, though I still don't think that there were many that night cradling their malts, and a'weeping an a'wailing over England's wretched luck! .......And don't think it isn't noted that, yer cannily did'ne pute yer guitars a' risk, did ye? Probably best not too....God's bound to be an Englishman..... some say it's Clapton!

Whatever... it was only a game of football......water under the bridge and a topic for debate in pubs and web boards forever!!

Now Murray.......... Because of his comment I always sit down to watch his matches thinking, 'I hope he loses'......But I always, always end up supporting him. And have to admit despite myself .....I aways will....unless he's playing an Englishman! Sadly, that's bloody unlikely!

I've finished with the Serena thing.....most of us feel the same, and that's comforting.
