I've had that problem with a booking via Thai Airways for a domestic flight, where they wanted to use my credit card as confirmation of my id at checkin. Unfortunately, it was a "virtual credit card" issued by Kasikorn Bank, only useable for internet purchases...but no card exists. I ended up having to rebook and pay with a real card.

I've never had that problem with booking a flight on UAL though. At checkin, they only ask for my passport.

So, what airline, what kind of ticket (domestic or international)? It appears they have different rules based either on the airline and/or the type of flight.

I booked a ticket with Nok Air and paid via credit card. When I checked in they asked to the credit card that I purchased the ticket with.

Hi MM

International London return Bangkok for my brother to visit, promised him a ticket last year. Looks like I will have to send him the money?

I thInk you need to send him the money. I've had the same problem with both Thai and Bangkok Airways.....they want to see the credit card that made the booking at check-in. Seems kind of dumb to me as it must cost them business. It's never a problem in North America or Europe....they don't care as long as you've paid.

One time in Phuket I bought a ticket from a travel agency. It was an Air Asia flight to Kuala Lumpur. Anyway, when he purchased the ticket, the travel agent used a credit card, but when I went to check in, the Airline only wanted to see my passport. They didn't ask for the credit card at all.

I've bought a ticket on Thai for someone else before when I haven't been travelling with them.. On the Thai website, In there T&Cs if I remember correctly, there is link to a form you need to print out and take to the local Thai ticketing office (at the Dusit by the start of beach road) with the credit card. They validate the booking & card and authorise the form which you can then send over to your brother.

Hi Paul

I think i'm right in saying that if you book your ticket directly with the airline using a credit/debit card. They will ask to see the card at check in. But, if you book through an agent i.e. WestEast, Southall Travel etc, you are not required to show the card used for booking the ticket. It might be wise to speak with your agent and explain the situation.

Thank you all for your replies.

The upshot is I think I will have to buy from an agent here, pay cash, and over the odds! I can get a direct flight with EVA for 28,000B on the internet but in the local travel agent they want 36,000B for the same seat!

In December, I had 30,000 FF miles on Thai than were going to expire at the end of the month. I didn't want to fly anywhere in Thailand just to use them up, so I decided give a girl I knew a R/T ticket to the airport nearest her home village so she'd avoid a 12-hour bus trip each way. But some taxes had to be paid by CC and I had to go the Thai office on Beach Road to have the ticket "validated." Once that had been done, it wasn't necessary to show the CC when she checked in for the flight. The Thai agent said the procedure would have been the same if I'd bought the ticket for the girl instead of using award miles. If the CC is shown to a Thai agent (has to be an official Thai agent, can't be just a travel agent) ahead of check-in, the CC holder doesn't have to travel on the same itinerary or show the CC at the time of check-in.

I have booked flights with Delta (and northwest before the merger) many times and they have never asked to see the card I used to pay for the ticket. Just want to see the passport.

Maybe different rules USA to Thailand.

I booked a flight for my wife's son on cc previously with Thai air and they asked to see card on both legs of the journey. Luckily he come over when we were coming back from holidays, and vice versa we dropped off at the airport when he came back to Thailand.

Funny though when I book a ticket in my own name and my wife they never ask to see the card.

I just went through the whole process of my sister trying to pay for my flight with a credit care. The whole thing is a long story that I won't tell. I ended up with three reservationc cancelled for what the airline said was the credit card company refusing the charge. Even though my sisters card had been charged twice for the tickets. More hassel than it was worth. I ended up going to BKK and paying cash at the airport. Another thing that will work is booking through a travel agent, the charge is through them, and then they pay the airline. Save yourself a lot of head ache, and either pay cash, or book through a trave agent.

Is your brother in the UK?

My sister got herself a good priced ticket via a travel agent. Try another agent.

Then you could just transfer the money to his account.

Surprised you can't pay for a ticket for someone else over the Eva website.... shop around more. Consider other airlines, I have found Qatar/Emirates easier to do internet bookings. You may have to send a letter to your brother which he can use at check-in if the CC is not available to him.

(Unless you have a brother like mine, if I sent him £700 me nor anyone would see him for a while!)

  • 1 month later...

I had this problem booking flights from Bangkok to London for my girlfriend, could not use EVA and i think Thai. I book on British Airways website, and this was not a problem.

Only problem is they are usually expensive for flights from London to Bangkok.
