EVA Air Accepted as Future Star Alliance Member

From their Evergreen Club newsletter:

 

Star Alliance announced that its Chief Executive Board (CEB) has unanimously accepted the membership application of EVA Air.

The Star Alliance network was established in 1997 as the first truly global airline alliance to offer worldwide reach, recognition and seamless service to the international traveller. Its acceptance by the market has been recognized by numerous awards, including the Air Transport World Market Leadership Award and Best Airline Alliance by both Business Traveller Magazine and Skytrax.

Star Alliance now has 26 member airlines and offers more than 20,800 daily flights to 1,345 destinations in 191 countries. Through its future membership in Star Alliance, EVA Air will be able to offer its customers access to a global network, along with seamless travel and status recognition within the various member carrier frequent flyer programs.

I've only got one decent Star Alliance choice and departure/arrival/travel time (UAL) to get back to the USA West Coast.

EVA is already a partner of United (see https://www.united.c....aspx?ItemId=71), so you can already book EVA flights in combination with UAL flights and/or use Award Miles for EVA flights. So far, though, it has been in practice virtually impossible to UAL FF points to upgrade an EVA flight. Maybe that will change if they join Star Alliance.

Good, EVA is a decent airline, and just better than flying any US airline. I would rather spend my money on any Asian airline, especially when it comes to long haul flights. The service has been good on this airline when I have done long flights with them.

You have or will have three choices. ANA is a Star Alliance member flying out of Narita and will be flying 787s to and from Seattle and San Jose.

 

It was supposed to begin on April 1st but there was talk it might be delayed. I have no idea if it has begun yet but will be great when it does!

It should take too much longer. ANA has 10 Boeing 787s in service and is taking delivery of at least one more this month, if not two, and probably 2 or more a month for the next several months.

ANA is the launch customer and they have 55 B787s on order. 36 of the 787-8 and 19 of the 787-9.

 

They have taken delivery of 10 of 787-8s and at least one more should be delivered before the end of this month.

 

As of the moment 14 of the 787-8 have been delivered. The previously mentioned 10 to ANA and 4 to JAL.

 

There are 3 sitting on the ramp for Air India. They have been tested and prepped and are waiting for the Indian government and Air India to make up their minds about delivery. Boeing has paid everything Air India is due because of the delays, and then some, but several weeks ago Air India (and the Indian government) demanded Boeing give them an additional 1 Billion Dollars! I would have told them to go pound sand. The word on the boards in Air India is grossly mismanaged, and has always been grossly mismanaged and probably always will be mismanaged due government control. At this point Boeing has already taken one of the planes that was suppose to go to Air India and allotted it to another airline. Guess we will have to just wait and see how it all works out.

 

In addition to the planes already mentioned there are another dozen or so in final prep for delivery. The planes are stacking up and number 74 the most recent to enter final assembly. Deliveries should be picking up at good place soon.

As of 17 July 2012, ANA now has taken delivery of 11 of the new 787s, making a total of 15 delivered to date. There are now 4 aircraft prepped and waiting for Air India to pick up and fly away.

United will get their first Boeing 787 this month (September), but it will be another week or two before they actually "get the keys." :) As part of the delivery ceremony the airline receives a ceremonial key.

 

As of 5 September, twenty 787-8s have been delivered. Thirteen to ANA, five to JAL, and one each to Ethiopian Airlines and LAN (Chile). There are four finished and setting on the ramp waiting for Air India and the Government of India to make up their minds as to when they will take delivery. Supposedly there is an Air India flight crew waiting at the Boeing delivery center.

Qatar will probably be the next to take delivery or maybe it will be United.

United has picked up their first 787 and it is on its way to IAH (Houston) as we speak and should arrived at 9:48 a.m., 22 September 2012, Houston time. It has not been reported as to whether the 787 was delivered yesterday or in the wee hours of this morning, but as it left BFI (Boeing) in the Seattle area, around 6 a.m. PDT, ownership must have changed hands yesterday.

That makes 23 of the 787s delivered so far, 13 to ANA, 5 to JAL, 1 to ET, 1 to LAN, 2 to AI and 1 to United. Another 6 are scheduled to be delivered this coming week. Including the 6 just mentioned, there 16 completed aircraft sitting on the ramp waiting for first flight (B1 flight) and/or delivery (i.e., flight testing is finished and Boeing is waiting for the customer to do their test flight (C1) and accept delivery).

ANA 787 service out of Seattle starts on 1 October 2012 and, as you have pointed out, out of San Jose in January 2013. This coming week ANA will take delivery of their 14th and 15th 787-8, and just a few days ago placed an order for 11 more 787-9s.

'Have rarely seen a competitive airfare (from LAX) to BKK on EVA. Seeing them talked about here, I've made it a point to check them the last few years and someone always seems to beating their economy fare by a significant margin (Korean, Asiana, Cathay Pacific, China E/S, sometimes AA or United).

Found this on an aviation web site. It was taken in the lobby of a Bay Area Japanese restaurant.

ANA now has 16 of the 787-8 and will take two more before the end of this month. That is half of their 787-8 order and they will also take 30 of the 787-9, deliveries of which should start late next year or early 2014.
