Hello to you all. Choices and racism.

Recommended Posts

I am planning a trip to Thailand soon, maybe Pattaya, maybe Phuket. I like to do research, I am an educated man, and it seems like Indian people can face discrimination in Pattaya, maybe not so much in Phuket. I am not coming for a cultural visit, I am not coming to get a sun tan (lol), I am coming to scratch an itch. Pattaya sounds like the best of the two but I don't want to be disappointed by being turned away because of my skin colour.

I do take many things I read on the internet with a large pinch of salt and every race has its people who give others bad names. As Phuket is more of a genuine holiday destination I feel that I may get a better welcome there, but my research says Pattaya trumps Phuket, so i ask this question, do any of you have real, actual personal experience of discrimination against Indian people in Pattaya?

Thank you.

S

PS I posted this request on another Pattaya forum and couldn't get a straight answer.

Are you Indian or a dark colored person from the UK/USA ?

I hold a British passport, born and bred in England, though to look at me you would think I walked out of Chennai yesterday. Does that matter? Most foreigners don't get the subtleties of accents. Or maybe you mean do I smell of garlic and stale sweat? LOL.

You will face some doormen blocking your path as some Indians give themselves a bad name by not paying for anything! That includes watchng the girls from outside the door , sharing a drink between 4/5 guys , wanting to grope the girls without buying a lady drink.

However , I've seen Indians as well as some indians friends of mine , spend more than their share of baht and enjoy themselves.

You cant change the minds of these thais so just brush them off and go to another bar. Make sure you stay at least for a drink and if you meet a girl you like , buy her a drink. If your stay is longer , make sure people know you spend ; doesnt have to be Bill Gates-spend but defintely dont be a Scrooge! You return trips to the same bar will be rewarded! A good tip for me is to buy the mamasan or waitress a drink but dont go buying a LD for every girl that says 'hi'!

It matters.... unfortunately.

There are a number of top end gogo bars with a very strict no Indian policy. Now.. while I am not racist in any way, I have to admit that here in Pattaya that policy is well deserved by the masses.. It is very common here to see indian guys pushing the limits of what is allowed and whats not... but again, beside the point.

Tho I usually do not suggest carrying your passport in Thailand as pickpockets abound, I would suggest that you do. Tho the door guys at some places won't care, some are smarter than others and flashing your UK passport will get you in.

Then there are quite a number of bars that will let you in assuming you dress ok... but I am guessing thats not an issue :)

All in all you can still have a good time here, but you will get knocked back a couple places.. try to not let that bother you.

Another thing that might work is to meet up with some fellow board members and go out with them... sometimes race is overlooked if your in a mixed company.

From personal experience, I can tell you that this DOES work. (I'm not Indian but a friend is.)

I am not indian, so I can't give you that type of insight, however I have witnessed indians behaving in a very poor manner, and I guess that does not help your cause. I think if you are a genuine type of person, that SOME bars, and BG's will see that & you will enjoy your time anywhere in LOS.

I was in Phuket last year, and if the reason for you going to Thailand is to enjoy female company, then I would strongly suggest you go to Pattaya over Phuket.

I think "Frosty's" advice of mingling in with other non indian types may help break down those barriers you otherwise may face.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Cheers

Ha, ha, ha, ha. I am a British Indian so to speak and I have seen Indians behave terribly. I don't want to go into my personal history but I was lucky at an early age to be influenced more by English culture than Indian. I have to say there are traits in many Indians, especially men, which I despise. They have a lot of front and persona and come across as being friendly guys whereas this is not the case. I personally don't trust most Indian men, and that is a big call to make. I can fully understand why they can get a bad name for themselves as I know, and understand their thought processes to a degree.

It is unfortunate that stereotyping exists, yet I agree it must exist and is useful in many facets of life. Let's hope that the strategies I have been offered here will help overcome some of the stereotypes.

You seem smart enough to handle and get around any discrimination you may encounter.

It is a sad fact that Indians (from India, you are British!) give themselves a bad name in Pattaya, and the Thais are under no PC restrictions and react to that as they feel fit....BUT.

Plenty of places will never hassle you..... a bit of research will help there.

Make a few whitey pals and go on the town with them. :D

I really think you should experience Pattaya.... it is an eye-opener.

Yes it does matter, less racism seems to be forwarded to UK/USA Negro's vs smelly Indians.

phuket is nice but your 'itch' wont be happy with Soi Bangla alone! Walking Street alone beats any agogo area in Thailand.

That is very funny, saying you will stop the racism and then use a dual usage term at the end and one of those usages is of course racist. Racism is very fucking sad indeed.
