People use both, as do I.

Fact is, that if you mention America or American ("American" being the basis for this discussion) most people won't think you're talking about the countries or the peoples of Brasil or Argentina or any other country in the Americas. It is what it is.........

It is what it is , but not what you perceive it to be.

Yet more slanted news coverage.

It was just a standard fire drill at one of the big hotels, no need to blow shit out of proportion

Nor does what most people think make something a fact. Most USians don't even realise they are part of a bigger continent.

You two are very good at changing what was said. The original post that set off this argument used the term "America".

He did not use the term South America or North America. Maybe it was just a brain fart and he meant to say "the Americas" or "North America" or "South America" but given he repeated "America" twice in his original post it does not appear to be the case. Again I have never heard anyone (The Americas, Africa, Europe, or Asia) mean anything besides the USA when using the singular form of "America". It appears that others on this thread agree.

I find it interesting that when I travel in Asia or Africa and tell people I am from the United States they often times don't understand. But as soon as I say America, they know exactly what country I am from.

Adding to the difficulty of being PC precise is the fact that there's no name other than USA and variations on that.

It's a similar problem to the USSR before the breakup. Many referred to that combination of states as "Russia" for brevity. That's good enough most of the time.

I always find myself saying I am from America when asked by a Thai. No way am I going to spell out or try to say an acronym.

So sue me!

I just regard it as an abbreviation of USA... but sometimes I have a bit of fun and say, oh really, which part, Canada?

Really. I'd just point to the nearest Thai girl and tell you to ask her. She'll know. (But then again, so does everybody else on the planet...)

You don't get songs like this in South America........ Not better or worse, just nothing like 'this' anywhere, except America/USA.

Great to hear them again after 50 Summers .......still sounding uniquely American.

"It's paradise when I... lift up my antenna" OK he's no Bob Dylan and I always thought Mike Love was just too pervy but there's a place in my heart for their songs
