I am a sickle cell anemia person. How to manage crisis pain in Patayya.

I am a 38 years person with Sickle Cell Anemia. I am planning to spent this summer in Pattaya. However, I dont know if I can find pain killers in Pattaya if I have this sudden severe crisis. Usuallu, my pain killers are Morphine or Demerol (Pethidine) and either tablets or injections. Does Pattaya pharmacies offer this? i have a report issued from my country doctor. Is there any one can tell me where can I get in case I have the crisis?

Many (most?) drugs are available in Pattaya pharmacies without prescriptions. I have no idea whether that extends to narcotics such as morphine and, even if they were, I would have some concerns in the event one had an encounter with law enforcement. Competent medical consultations are readily available. Perhaps see a local doctor and get a prescription?

I am pretty sure morphine associated medications would be quite difficult to obtain and I believe Demerol would require a prescription.

It is true many things can be bought over the counter but some things are restricted and more are being added all the time......some sleeping tablets have been added for example as they are used in 'dope and rob' crimes.

 

I can't really help you further other than to suggest a lot of research, and can only also suggest you line up a local doctor to help cover you. There is a good standard large hospital in town.

My experience with Thai doctors (and dentists) is that they are very reluctant to use chemicals for pain management.

 

I'm wondering if it's a Buddhist thing, since Buddhism focuses on suffering in all its forms.

 

I agree with jacko's suggestion, but am not sure how to implement it prior to your arrival.

Perhaps you could try to contact a local doctor.......or hospital to discuss the issue.

Could your local doctor get in touch with a Pattaya pharmacy beforehand? Boots would be the best one I'd imagine.

The best thing to do would be to establish a treatment relationship with a Thai hospital clinic. Perhaps bring copies of your medical records for the doctor to review. Most hospitals have pharmacies, I believe, so if you have a problem, you could always call you Thai doctor.

Check out Bangkok Pattaya Hospital. I've used them for a medical emergency and received first rate care. From what, I understand you can bring prescription medication with you but you need a copy of the original prescription. Check with the Thai embassy in your country for accurate up to date info.

 

Asian countries have VERY STRICK drug enforcement laws. Be careful and don't try to smuggle in narcotics!

Agree with this as you will need a doctor's prescription for narcotic medication and it will be dispensed by that doctor's hospital pharmacy. There is a hematologist at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital.

My experience in web boards with first posts seeking narcotics is that the person is a narcotic seeker (and usually hasn't the disease mentioned).

 

Someone with a disorder needing these drugs can get a supply to carry and permission from the Thai government to bring them in.

 

Narcotics need advance permission from the Thai FDA.

 

If this is serious then arrange an appointment at a name brand private hospital with paperwork from the doctor where you live sent in advance.

 

Morphine and Demerol both are not going to be found in many if any Pattaya pharmacies vs a hospital like Bangkok Pattaya or Pattaya International etc., who you can contact by e-mail in advance.
