Super Bowl XLIX

Recommended Posts

For arguments sake, though I agree it was not the best play call in the history of the Super Bowl.... Everyone watching and playing defense expected Lynch to get the ball and if Butler doesn't make his read it's an easy TD and called another gutsy/good call by Carroll. Seahawks gambled and lost.

You mad Bro?

Guys, he won't stop until you agree with him or stop replying...and ttk, you accused joekicker of being one who had to have the last word   By the way, just to keep this in perspective, bad call o

Unlike buzz head, I know how many CB's are in the leaque and how many most teams have.I also know that he was exactly right wben he said Sherman only had 3 tackles because they do do run plays his way

Who called the play Coach or QB?

QB tells the offense the play in the huddle, but it's rare for a QB to call his own game these days thoigh he does call audibles (play change at the line of scrimmage) if he sees the defense lined up a certain way. The offensive coordinator calls/chooses most of the plays, but the head coach can change the play anytime he wants to. In this case the head coach/Carroll called the play.

There is actually a whole lotta communication going on during the buffering. :D

Pete is taking full credit for the call. Doesn't mean he made it though :-)

Was just reading an article on Yahoo that quotes him as saying the coordinator made the call, but good for him for taking the responsibility for it.

If the pass play would have worked, everyone would be calling it a brilliant play. I personally think it was one of the worst calls I have ever seen especially in the biggest game of the year.

They have the best most powerful running back in the NFL. If they would have run the ball, they had three chances to make one yard. YES, stupid indeed.

I disagree, with all due respect. It was not a gamble, it was sheer stupidity in the heat of the moment. The pressure is immense but he does not get a pass, he's a pro. One does not gamble on second down and a few feet to the win. They had a couple more chances and they pissed them down the shitter with an immature call. That poor fucker will wake up at 3 am at least once a week for the rest of his life regretting that call :)

I believe it really was a gamble. Carroll is a risk taker. Against Green Bay his risk paid off. Against New England it did not. While Brady appeared to be playing catch with Seattle's defense for awhile, Wilson had no interceptions till the end. So it was a calculated risk. Seattle will be back next year in better shape than ever.

The Pats brought that on. It looked as if Irvin was defending a teammate. Too bad they couldn't do some damage to Brady.

Spoken like a true Seahawks apologist.

Doubtful, Seattle had to stay out of the blue chip free agent market last year to sign/retain Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman.

They were fortunate that Russell Wilson was such a gem but they want to re-sign him in 2015 to a long term deal as his 4 year $3 million rookie deal expires at the end of 2015. That is going to take a $100 million contract and a $10 million cap hit to do and they don't have that space, so they will be losing more key players again then like Browner and Tate then they pick up. Losing the $10 million cap space cushion they have had on QB for the past few years is going to hurt.

Browner sure made the right choice this year though.

They just signed Lynch to a long term contract. the LOB contracts were finished this year so the #1 defense two years in a row is already in great shape. About the only other major renegotiate left is Wilson.

Not sure how many blue chip players they need that they already do not have. Besides, they have shown great choices late in the draft (Wilson, Sherman....)

Bigest hit is the defebsive coordinator leaving

They have no good wideouts. The best one in the Super Bowl was from their practice squad. Kearse and Baldwin are just so so. They need at least one good speed wideout and a slot receiver like the Patriots' Edelman. Maybe they can draft one but if they dump $100 million or so on Wilson with a $10 million or so cap hit for next year they won't be able to get a good burner free agent. The Percy Harvin fiasco is going to be hard to recover from now.

They will be good next year but they will fall off if they cannot sign some free agents for depth at least. An argument can be made that they are too thin defensively as it is. Brady had his way with the secondary after Jeremy Lane broke his wrist.

Not too many teams have a list backups for starters.

The Percy Harvin deal does not even come close to a top 100 failure. Sure they lost some picks, but the lost first round draft pick would be # 30 or so overall. Every team has made some bad moves. Look at Chicago when Seattle managed to dump Rick Mirer ( a consensus top 25 pick failure) on them for a first round pick. How about getting Steve Largent for an 8th round pick. And for a failed move can anyone still spell Bosworth?

First round picks are never a sure thing, Griffen 3 is a great example having been benched a few times and in several trade rummers. Harvin had shown great potential as a receiver...but also hinted at being a non-team player. seattle took a chance that did not pan out.

At least Brady threw it good enough to be caught in the first 20 minutes of a 60 minute game...........

True about the defensive coordinator loss. Seattle is retaining a top notch defense. So they will start as a top ranked defense unit. No doubt the offense could use some work. But in reality with a strong defense a weaker offense can still prosper. It just takes more chances to get there. The odds makers favor them to win 2016 Super Bowl. The Vegas sports books have been amazingly right this season. Lets see how next season goes.

After a few days to absorb tne outcome, lets look at who really blew the call. Seatle had the ball 1st and goal. The first down play gained 4 to place the ball on the 1 yard line. First thought...give the ball to Lynch and run...BUT looking closer.

80% or so chance to score on a run. 2 runs 96%. 3 99%. Except with only one time out, they would not get 3 running plays off. Basically the second down pass was a throw away play...and NE had their running defense in. In all of 2014 no team who threw from the one yard time was intercepted. Seattle really needed to kill the clock....odd for the offense but in this case true. Anyone who understood the odds would have assumed Seattle would score and would want to save time for Brady to get in field goal range. With the kicker they have, 50+ would be very doable. Seattle would have kicked off and probably a squib lick to prevent a run back. Lets assume 35 yaerd line to start so maybe only 30 yards for field goal range. Brady had shown that he could do that but NE needed all the time posiible to do that...YET they did not call timeput after the first down paly and left a significant amount of time run off the clock....20 vs 40 is a HUGE difference.

A moot point since they got the interection 1-2% change. Had that not happened, NE's failure to call the timeout would be the topic....and hard to explain why.... At last Pete played the odds and made the right call.....even though it is hard to accept.

A defense that does not give up a pount will never lose. Worst case 0-0-16 ....an offense that scores everytime may lose every game if they have fewer possensions 0-16-0

Seahawks never have anything to apologize for.

After living in the Seattle area for 5 years, I can verify they never apologize. After the replacement officials bestowed on them a touchdown against Green Bay on the last play of the game a few years ago, the local sports radio guys were earnestly explaining why the call was correct.
