Are we seeing a rise in assaults?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Reading the online Pattaya news sources, there seems to be quite a rise in assaults on farangs recently by groups or numbers of young Thai males.

Two this week from one source, one of a drunken Indian tourist getting mugged and beaten for $2500 and 50k baht (yeah right) and another about a young drunken piss head getting into bother on Bukhao. Although the latter is more than likely the guys fault (from the reporting anyway), throw into the mix the recent punch up at Skyfall and it seems that violence is becoming either more widely reported, or more frequent in its occurrence.

I know each case I've mentioned has different reasons, but the outcome has been the same, farang ending up on the floor covered in blood. I'm being careful not to draw any conclusions as to who is to blame etc etc, it's the actual use of violence that i'm on about, which is sad because in many cases it is avoidable (usually by not acting like a cunt in a country in which you are a guest).

It might be just my take on things, some months we seem to have several suicides, but recently I just noticed that assaults seem to be on the increase, or should I say acts of violence.

Isn't it funny that whenever somebody gets mugged it always seems to get reported they were carrying rather large amounts of cash :whistling:

I never go out with more than 10K in my pocket, the rest is locked up safely in my room.

I always wonder when I hear about the large amount of cash back in the room safe if they can file a claim on their home owners insurance?

I am unsure if violence is on the increase or not but I feel as safe at night as I always have. I am a committed night owl and am rarely back in my room till well after three am and honestly say that I have never had an issue with any of the locals. I actually feel more threatened by some of the poorly mannered tourists than the locals. Some of their activities and language is completely out of order at times.

Say even 5 a week, 250 a year, several million tourists over that year, odds are not that high. 1/100th of 1% mugged.

Add in the time, circumstances, drunkenness, behaviour and maybe it is not very high at all for the average person.

I'd worry more about accidents between cars and pedestrians, scooters, illness and animals.

Do you mean a tourist in Thailand claiming for a theft off his home insurance back in say USA? I suppose it depends on the policy but more likely claimable on their travel insurance. As to say an Expat claiming for theft off his home insurance, the policies I saw rarely included valuables and you were expected to demonstrate you had them, cash would be a tough one.

As far as robberies are concerned Butch, I would expect an increase this time of year.

They want funds to celebrate Songkran.

The particular crimes you mention were not all robbery assaults, some were incidents between drunks and locals, a drunk Pole picking a fight in a GGB and another drunk perhaps playing grab-ass with a stranger.

I don't think we see the whole picture when it comes to the reporting of crimes here, I have this recollection that the news outlets were not supposed to show too many incidents that put Thailand in a bad light, and balance those they did with a feel good story (taxi driver returns money!). Expect a bit more violence and assault over the next 12 or so days, one reason I stay out of town.

I think there is a bit more of a little Thai teen gang presence in tourist areas ( in all of Pattaya as well ) than before but if you use common sense i don't see any problems

British bar owner jumped by bike thieves in Pattaya

A British bar owner in Pattaya was hurt after being jumped by six young men bent on stealing his expensive motorbike early today.
Police found Danny Daniels standing guard over his Honda PCX with his bruised and bleeding face on Khao Noi Road in Nong Prue sub-district of Bang Lamung district around 3am.
The Briton said he was attacked by six teenagers who showed up on three motorcycles while he was on his way to his beer bar on Bua Khao Road in the central area of the Chon Buri province city.
The group cut him off and he fell. The gang then punched and hit him with crash helmets in a bid to steal his bike. But he said he fought back and held tight to the motorcycle worth more than 60,000 baht. The gang then fled the scene.
Bang Lamung police were trying to identify the gang with surveillance-camera footage

I find it hard to believe a gang would bother to "bike-jack" a rather common motorbike like a Honda PCX.

That's his story of course.

I do hope they catch them and would be interested in their side of this event.

I saw (in my imagination) another headline>

INDIAN LOSES MOTOR-BIKE.

An Indian visitor to Pattaya reported to the police that possibly the only gold plated motor bike in the world was robbed off him at 3 am this morning. Worth as much as a million baht the owner complained that before the price of gold fell it was worth almost two million baht.

Enquiries continue.

The problem here in Thailand is that the gangs are mostly underage little bastards who cannot be prosecuted because of their age. Western countries also suffer from these stupid laws. Probably the best way of protecting yourself is not to be a target. No watch, jewelry or even rings. Wearing a necklace makes you an obvious easy target. Be careful when making an ATM withdrawal. Remotely located ATM machines are often watched.

When my brother was in the coach business a fair amount of his custom was airport transfers which meant I was often sent on them. On many occasions I overheard my passengers discussing scam insurance claims on their travel insurance on the way back from the airport. One even bragged about it to me saying they were doing it to pay for their next holiday.
