4G in Pattaya?

Recommended Posts

I received an SMS from AIS last week that invited me to join their 4G test rollout.

I followed the SMS with a USSD code to them, and they sent me back a message saying I'd successfully been added to the 4G test.

I have a Samsung S5 which didn't require any further setup.

This is a typical result of a speedtest over 4G. It's much faster than my TRUE cable connection!

The test runs until January 10, and allows up to 4GB of traffic during that period...and it's free!

Did you try it to a USA server?

I kinda wonder whether the 4G will take international bandwidth away from things like the True cable connection.

And you did not need to change your SIM card? ( My phone should be good to go too).

Later Edit. Shit, I just remembered I got an SMS from them Dec 13th and as usual when it is in Thai I ignored it, I think that may have been an invitation too. If I haven't deleted it I will run it through the translator and may be joining you in 4G land.

No, I didn't try a USA server because I was only interested in network raw speed, not network delays thru slower connections.

I suspect the USA server connections wouldn't be any better than my cable capability now, since that would go through many hops and slower nodes.

This isn't going to be good for torrents due to the restrictions on traffic capacity (currently 4GB). I'd use that up in a day.

As long as the traffic is metered, I can't really think of anything it's that good for, but it's fun to watch the speedtest screen peg the 50Mb marker!

BTW, just send *411# to get started.

Yes I did and got all the confirmation SMS messages but am unable to get onto an LTE Network. My phone is normally in Global Mode and I switched it to LTE/CDMA. I wonder if 4G is in my current area or there is something else I need to do.

Could be there is no 4G out in the boonies where you live. You will definitely get it if you come to civilization again.

OTOH, mine didn't work until I had rebooted the phone (as they sort of say in one of their setup pages).

With a Samsung A5, I had to stumble around a bit. When I go to settings, I start in Quick Settings. Eventually, I tried the More Networks option and things began to look like the instructions on the AIS site. And, yes, you do need to restart your phone.

I rebooted it and still no LTE ability to connect, if I select LTE only I don't have any network, no phone signal..

It tells me to put it back into Global Mode.

I had read somewhere that selecting one mode reduced battery consumption as the phone will not have all its radios turned on.

Have to see if it works tonight when I am in town. No sense being in LTE only mode though if I am going to lose the network when I go home! I am only 12 km north of Klang!

jacko, what make and model is your phone?

I'm not sure what Global Mode is...does that mean you have ROAMING on? If so, I've not turned on ROAMING.

I'd I can't get LTE, the phone reverts to 3G or 2G as signal allows. There's never been a problem getting some signal except at Superbaby where I'm pretty sure they're using a mobile suppressor.

I have a Samsung S5 as I mentioned earlier.

That's pretty good, mike_asia, but it's not been updated for AIS 4G yet...says carrier doesn't support it, probably because it's a test period. It certainly does support LTE until Jan 10.

Oh ok. I used it before to check true move H...anyone using it and getting 4G/LTE ?

I also have an S5. I just looked at the network settings and it looks like it supports 4G out of the box. Not that it does me any good. Out here in the boonies, I'd be happy with decent 3G.

It is a HTC One Mini 2, (what a dopey name). Global suggests it searches for all the 3 or 4 different types of Network until it is happy, 2G, 3G or 4G. It does have LTE and I thought the correct frequency too. It would not connect to 4G last night when I was in town so darned if I know. I may have to pull the SIM card and reinsert it, but will have to locate the silly little pin thing that looks like a paper clip!

*crying * I want 4G like Martin

Naw, who gives a shit. As Martin says not sure how the fast data rate will be of much use.

Just intrigued by the technicalities.

I have the data turned off most of the time anyhow, and the Wi-Fi.

Or you could just use a paper clip or pin

No I have a couple of the correct pins somewhere, paper clip wouldn't fit in.

Done it now and still doesn't work.

  • 3 weeks later...

Further to this I wonder MM if AIS will be worth sticking with!

They didn't do very well in the recent 4G bandwidth auctions.

I went into Telewiz in BigC-X to ask why my LTE did not work and basically got fobbed off to the point I felt pissed off.

Then my Mrs goes to her home village and comes back complaining that her data access on AIS was rubbish there, yet her brothers were doing fine with DTAC and True, so much so my Mrs visited True and has applied to transfer her number over to them. I have a True SIM too and they are offering free data if I can get people to switch to them.

Slip your SIM into MMs phone and see what happens. I suspect your phone doesn't support the bands

It says it does on the spec.......and AIS confirmed the phone and SIM card were 4G compliant.

Anyhow, it was a free trial offer which I believe ends in a few days.

Yes, it ends on the 10th.

Regarding AIS and 4G. I love AIS 3G coverage..it works most places I go. I don't know about their 4G coverage or their offerings after the trial. You're right..they came to the 4G game later than TRUE or DTAC and lost out on the spectrum bidding. They might end up regretting that if they are charged high rates for buying bandwidth from the winners.

I'll wait and see what they offer when they go production, which should be soon after the trial.

It's going to be interesting shopping between AIS, DTAC, TRUE and now JASMINE to see who offers the best deals and best coverage.

If anyone has DTAC or TRUE 4G here in Pattaya, it'd be great to hear from you on this thread.
