Texas - massive storm approaching

Recommended Posts

We're seeing it on UK news that it's going to make landfall in the next few hours. Without wanting to turn this into a political discussion, I hope that the US Govt does more this time than they did when Katrina struck.

Any BM's or their relatives stateside, I hope you are safe and not effected by this. It looks like it's going to be devastating.

There's not a lot the government can do to stop the hurricane, but there's an entire agency called FEMA that has the job of responding. I'm sure Trump will make government resources available to help clean up the mess.

Every once in a while I think about buying a condo at the beach, but then something like this happens. I guess that's why insurance rates can be so high.

Up to 40 inches of rain (over 1 meter) and a huge storm surge.

Fox News showed a European model that has the storm stalling at the coast and picking up more energy and walloping the coast again. Some thought that it might drift toward Louisiana in its second phase.

They are saying the flooding will be unprecedented. Currently a category 2 storm but only 1 mph below a category 3.

Harvey will landfall in Texas rather than Lousyana. Texans tend to be more responsible, self-sufficient and less reliant on the Feds for help. But then they also tend to be Republicans.

Yes initial landfall of first stage before the stall is Texas. Then it backs up a bit over warm water and re-intensifies. European models predict this. At that point it will either hit Texas straight on again or drift toward Louisiana. That is what current models predict.

It's the rain/flooding of most concern especially since Harvey is moving slowly and Houston is on the 'dirty' northeast side. Rule of Thumb is 100/MPH of storm yields amount of expected rainfall. Since Harvey is moving 3 - 4 MPH we're expecting 30 inches of rain in H-town between today and next Wednesday.

Some areas over 3 feet of rain.

Meteorologists are saying there is an inversion layer above the storm which will keep it from moving inland and keeps the storm from dissipating. This could be a problem they say until Tuesday or Wednesday.

I saw a report on Galveston 1900 Cat 4 storm. Biggest natural disaster in US history. The island was eight feet high. The storm surge was 15 feet high.

Galveston now sits on an island 25 feet high.

Hi,

The storms in the weather seem to mirror the political storms in DC. Civil war seems to have broken out among the "elite" of US. What lies ahead ???

Was a clever TF.

We can agree to disagree about clever but it was stereotypical Wac.

Harvey has already been downgraded and here in Houston we are expecting a lot less rain and spread over about a week although there will be some localized flooding; it is much less severe than the floods of last year. There are some normal tangential tornado offshoots but otherwise seems as Houston dodged a bullet this time.

I'm South of Houston and Friday morning I loaded up dogs, horse, guns and headed to Dallas.

Shut off the gas and electric which I hated to do as now I cannot monitor the house but storm damage will be rough.

I did booby trap front and back doors to my house as looting will be rampant (left a combo of old style steel traps designed to snag bears and coyotes).

I warned the neighbors about the traps....looks like the house will get flooded and with brown murky water on that floor no one will see those traps.

Many of my neighbors refuse to leave thinking they need to protect their livestock and homestead.

Since I only have the one horse and two dogs it was easier for me to load up and leave.

This will be nasty as that damn thing will stall out from Corpus to Houston and just pour rain for 4-5 days.

The Governor of Texas Greg Abbott is on the ball....the only thing he needs from the Feds is to stay the fuck out of the way.

The National Guard will keep the situation under control but with the devastation expected for the Gulf Coast it will be rough.

This looks nasty and I wish more of my neighbors would have left but too late now.

I wish the TV cameras and live reporting were just as intensive during monsoon flooding in Bangladesh. I wonder how TV companies calculate public interest.?..1 dead cowboy's horse = 5,000 dead Bangladeshis??

Sorry but I find the disparity too distateful for words

That and endless hours of nothing new. This all started before it was even close to land.

Good theater?

It got up to a cat 4. I understand it has been downgraded to a tropical storm. Reduced winds but still lots of rain. One official death so far.

High pressure to NW and SE. There is no place for the storm to go. Lots of flooding and collapsed buildings.

Watching some live streams on you tube CBSN in Corpus Christi are giving out a lot of info, I was also following a chaser called Jeff piotrowski https://www.pscp.tv/Jeff_Piotrowski/1DXGyOrdzvPxM but his stream was lost part way through, pretty scary as stuff was literally falling apart around him.

Looks really bad.

I checked out this guy's vblog...wow, he gets excited, doesn't he?

Is chaos too much to hope for?

My thoughts and prayers to the people in Texas. Wind damage is bad, but flood damage is the absolute worst.

It’s a good thing that most Americans outside of Texas aren’t as provincial when it comes to helping their neighbors as Senator Ted Cruz who voted against federal disaster aid to New York after superstorm Sandy.
