Living in the UK, and prefering direct flights, i've always used Thai or EVA, well, nearly always EVA.

I think the overall experience is better with EVA, and they are nearly always cheaper. We're booked for mid January, me the wife and our infant daughter, in total cost £940.

I have flown Thai before, but that was before they changed/upgraded the aircraft? I found the then aircraft and fixtures looked a bit dated compared to EVA, the general attitude etc wasn't as good as EVA.

Has the Thai upgrade made them better?

Thing is, Thai fly twice a day from London, compared to EVA's once, and Thai are consistently more expensive, so more people must prefer to use them than EVA.

I know Thai people sometimes prefer to fly them, and London has a big community, but that many? My wife is Thai and has flown both, she actually prefers EVA. But again, that was before the aircraft change/upgrade.

Thai, A380' seats because of their running at a high capacity have taken a beating. Even last October when I went out on Thai it was obvious the seats were wearing very thin. Same with Eva (so I am told) high seat occupancy means seat foam degeneration which means you will soon feel the aluminium base of the seat on your bum.

I have been doing about 6 return journeys a year with EVA and have never had that seat problem.

The problem now is that they are reconfiguring Economy to 3-4-3, putting in about 40 extra seats, and have removed a toilet.

I experienced it for the first time 4 weeks ago and it is noticeably a downgrade, particularly with shoulder space.

OK I accept what you say but a friend flew Eva a few months back and said in his opinion the planes interiors were taking a hammering.

Maybe he only has a small arse !!

That's with EVA, Baz, yes?

So they have basically changed the 3 in the middle to a 4? We're booked for the middle for January, i'll have to contact them and get a change to the side 3, are they still the same?

Yes, with EVA.

It's a full refit. All the seats are the same (small) size.

I suggest you go on to their website and see where you are seated.

Not all the planes have been refitted so next week I'm going out with the new 3-4-3 but returning on an old 3-3-3.

We're 46 J&K going, 46 A&B coming back, so not in the middle. I think they have moved us, as i had rang the London Office after booking, wanting a bassinet seat, though they said our daughter would be too old, they couldn't confirm that row but would put us directly behind, so in the middle.

I'm fine with where we are now, behind but at the side. Hopefully no one in the third seat, so the missus can make a bed in two seats with the baby, everyone happy. If there is, i'll have to 'inform' them it would be better to move, as she'll cry if no sleep ;)

Assuming pricing is similar i would go for Thai in economy and EVA in business

Very rarely seen Thai the same price, usually up to £100 more in economy.

Certainly many people must prefer Thai in economy, as two flights a day.

It is very rare for there to be more than a handful of vacant seats.

PS

Many people with babies try to get 45 or 61 D, E, F or G on the 3-4-3 configuration, or 46 or 61 D, E or G on the 3-3-3 configuration. These are the seats with the fold-down baby shelves in front of them.

Ive been flying with Thai and Eva for the last 15-20 years.

Personally? I prefer Thai. I like the flight times ( I leave mid-day from Heathrow...and leave BKK. early morning).

Thais I.F.E. used to be pathetic...thats when I started using Eva more...Now however, all seats have a screen....I find both Thai and Eva flights to be nearly always full! So little chance of "spare" seats............Though I have been lucky a few times (with spare seats I mean!) with Thai....but never with Eva!

Eva are usually cheaper than Thai yes... but sometimes the difference isnt so great....As I say the Thai flight times work much better for me too..

Also....as has been mentioned...Eva are going to cram more people into their 777s soon. So of course will be busier etc.

I've been on EVA with quite a few empty seats, but i always go mid week, so not so busy i suppose.

Yea, that's the bassinet seats, but she'll be 18 months in Jan, so they won't let us sit there, too old.

Certainly yes, when i did fly the couple of times with Thai, it was due to the times suiting, the return moreso, i prefer night flights.

But as said above, i mostly fly mid week, this time on a Thursday, and certainly have seen a good few 'spare' seats before. Probably just jinxed myself, but they're quite accomodating, an i'll ask at check in (because of the infant we go to the desk) and see if anyone is beside us, or if they can move them. Ask on the plane as well if need be, the air hostess are quite good as well.

The only other direct option are BA which leaves around 15:00 (BA009 I think) but that should really be a last resort, as BA are awful. Seat guru lists their 777 fleet as 3-3-3 and a 31 inch pitch though, as opposed to EVA 32 inch in econ.

With the new EVA seating config, I think the options open are either Thai econ or EVA deluxe. EVA econ is going to be bloody terrible on a busy flight, 40 extra PAX and one less toilet isn't going to make the journey any easier.

BA on the 777 flights to Bkk also dont have enough 'Normal' meals and many are forced to east salads. All served by their delightful shirtlifting crew.

Lol yep, the in flight menu of Mars bars and 3 days old salads is exquisite I imagine. Don't forget the "whole world owes us a favour" attitude of the cabin crew.

EVA always. Thai lost the plot standard wise many years ago whereas EVA staff are always friendly and helpful, admittedly I usually fly business. As for BA I'd rather go by bhat bus.

Would be my view as well.

I've been flying Thai 2 or 3 times a year for the past 8 or 9 years and never really have a problem with them. They always change my seat for an exit row for the extra legroom or change to a middle row if its empty so I can stretch out. No issues with service, baggage or food, although the food is nothing to write home about. Manage to use my points to get a few upgrades to business which is pretty good.

All in all, not bad!!

irish

Be careful with BA, I have not used them but trip reports are not very good, also BA use the original 777-200 aircraft I think.

Eva I always used to use but they kept reducing pluses and increasing minuses so i have emigrated to Thai. I did a post about the EVA 3-4-3 when it was first muted, I know they have been flying this version on 067 and 068 during the summer, but I had something in the back of my mind that they were reverting back to the 3-3-3 later, perhaps someone in the know can update.

They are using a mixture of 3-3-3 and 3-4-3. The 3-4-3 is not a good experience; the narrow shoulder width is very noticeable. I had a chunky chinky sat next to me yesterday who was a space invader. We had words!
