How do Agoda get there star rating for a hotel?? I put in I'm looking for a 4 star hotel for family coming to Thailand. The first hotel that  came up was Sawasdee Siam Hotel  I stayed there before, OK clean but old and the hotel is not kept up well. Maybe a 2-3 star hotel.  The third hotel was Charles Place, I never stayed there but when I looked at there room photos, small rooms, old furniture and the TV was not even a flat screen but a 15 year old 20" TV. How can that be a 4 star hotel?? You can't count on the star ratings.

Probably based on official ratings which could have been given many years ago. Treat with a massive dose of salt. Best to look for the facilities and location that suits and then recent reviews.

Or somewhere you personally know.....

"Gold Start ratings are supplied by the property to reflect the comfort, facilities and amenities you would expect." Areca only has 3.5, and although it may depend on which of the 3 buildings you are in, I would personally give it a four.

I stayed at the 'purple palace' (Sawasdee Siam) only once, with a couple of maters. We found it bloody awful and the breakfast almost inedible. It was also pretty full of really cheapskate Indians and Russians. It had a fairly good pool and some of the Russians (and I repeat "some") were really fuckable in their tiny bikinis, but the rest were obese. We moved on the 2nd day. This was maybe 10 years ago. Never a 3 star hotel back then.

Isn't the star rating based on which services it provides?  Like it could be 4 star if it has a diner, gym, pool, etc. but it doesn't mean what quality it is.  Partly asking as I thought it meant what services they had not quality.  I am prepared to be corrected.

I think that's basically how official ratings work but tour companies and booking sites ratings do sometimes differ from these, possibly based on reviews?

Pretty sure I have been asked to rate hotels after an Agoda stay...always thought it was an average of those rather than rating on facilities for their system.

Interesting re Agoda

I had to come back for 2 weeks and back out on 11th January

Because of where I live in the UK and the ability to get to Gatwick (a rare occurence) and an early flight I looked at getting a hotel at Gatwick for evening of the 10th

initally I looked at Agoda without being logged in.....£55 (very fair) for the one I wanted

Logged in few hours later to book it and status is high (usual agoda I thought bollacks) but now the price dropped to £51....now they have thrown in free breakfast AND upgraded me to a family room  !

Fair play indeed

I'm actually in the accomodation in above post now

Has to rank as the biggest shithole I have ever dropped anchor in

I wouldnt even know where to start but its mid winter minus 3 outside and this in photo is the heating provided....its a family room "upgrade" and woke at 1am its so cold inside

Wifi you get 30 minutes and then have to pay (not joking)

The approach road to the property has no pavement. You're literally walking in the road full of potholes (and ice)

TV is something out of the ark must be about 19" tops

I could go on for an hour......wait to the fuc**** see the review I give tomorrow once left. Travelodge Gatwick

I've stayed at Premier Inn Heathrow previously which was fine. Wrongly assumed this would be similar

I wrote the above before going down for the breakfast buffet and the foodi itself  was actually fine...solid 8/10 there

It opened at 6am and I was first in quickly followed by others.....2 piles of plates heated through. Top 2 plates covered in yesterdays remnants of food

This time I have reacted lol and totally warranted.....calls the server over and just point. Further words were superfluous. Not a word of apology whatsoever. Just took the 2 plates away and said absolutely nothing !

Even more alarming from the Travel lodges own point of view....nobody bothered checking complimentary breakfast voucher whatsoever. Anyone could walk in

Checking out a bloke comes up beside me and says he wants to pay for his breakfast lol (its not included automatically its £11.95).....complete honesty from him and his wife yet the indifference from reception staff just astonishing. Couldnt have cared less and with that shuttle coach came and the less said the better about that lol.....shocking experience all around.....will give it overall 2/10 and one point was for the decent food assuming I dont start shitting myself to death on the plane lol

No alarm wake up call service so just had phone alarm but woke up 1am anyway... just farcical

Ive tried Travellodges before, but they always seem to disappoint.😩

Flying out of Gatwick I always stay in the Manor Royal Premier Inn. Short taxi ride to the airport but every stay has been excellent. Staff are friendly and helpful and the restaurant is great.

I remember last time I flew out of Manchester, I had decided to get a room near the airport, I declined the Radisson which is in it, and requires a mortgage. I got the train, which is good if you have time and can risk leaves on the track, and it drops you nearly in the airport. Problem is, these hotels are not as close as you expect. Apparently a minibus does the rounds, and you are supposed to call them... but I tried to walk. I was freezing cold and knackered by the time I made it... there are all these barriers to stop you crossing roads!
