Is the Vientiane restaurant still going not-so strong out there just off Pattaya Tai? Last time I went (on a Sunday) it was closed. I also saw a Vientiane restaurant on Soi Nerm Plab Wan as I drove down a feww days ago... is it affiliated?

I was pondering similar madness only the other day as traffic bottle-necked due to resurfacing on Sukhumvit between Sattahip and Bang Saray. Why were they doing this at rush-hour? Also the resurfacing of Sukhumvit last year, heading South before arriving at Tai, has been negated by the burying of huge concrete pipes. Thrappaya remains incomplete, and the incomplete horror continues past immigration onto Jomtiem second 'Rd'. There is just too much traffic this time of year for these disasters.... Perhaps the rainy or hot season isn't suitable either though, but detour planning and alternatives is poor. Nor does the driving methods of LOS improve the situation as keeping junctions clear isn't part of the driving mentality. Oh well LA isn't great driving either......

You can always check the rates on the bank sites...EG SCB It has been holding flat around 46-47 (for cash) for a bit and long and short trends still look downward. I don't expect to see 50 any time soon as UK economic data will likely take a dive, with increasing inflation and a VAT increase induced slowdown. I bit the bullet and transferred over cash myself only recently, my last prior remittance being during the last improvement to above 50 (August 2010).

Walking around in Pattaya is getting hard with the ever increasing traffic. The over utilisation of places with passing trade as display area for sellers forces you into the paths of coaches the size of battleships. I also feel nervous walking down say Soi 7 or 8 as I know motorcycles are whizzing up behind me and I feel they derive great pleasure from buzzing me. One of the great plusses for me was when they finished the beach side of beach rd, and suddenly there was this really pleasant, shaded by coconut trees, 'avenue' to walk down, no motorcycles or hawkers, unlike the slow progress likely across the street. You could get one foot infront of the other, move along with the Beer Garden and TV screen your target ahead, the sea lapping to your right. You can't sit on Soi LK Metro without hawkers bugging you either, like the old days of the beer bars. Market stalls with 3 ft between them and NO way of bypass is hopelss, like the odd number side of Sukhumvit in Bangkok, or the Patpong market. Is this really what the tourists from Russia and India fly 1000s of miles for?

Not sure about that... the dongles often have other stuff in there that loads software and memory etc etc and might well not work with a different networks SIM. Get one here.... or you can just plug your mobile into the laptop and get onto the internet that way. Prepaid air4time is the cheapest way otherwise it costs 1 baht/minute.

Good rant LDK an spot on. I have been decrying this 'let's please the tourists with another market' policy for a while. As I walked about getting nowhere fast on NYE trying to get to a GGB, being impeded by gawping shoppers, I pondered that Pattaya is heading from Monger Central to Market hall. You can't enjoy a walk down the beach rd, you have to step into the gutter in front of TOPS, more of Carrefour carpark vanishes, the aisles get narrower in the mall. They all sell the same crap and are not worthy of looking. Pattaya City planning really is choking the place down.
