The mom sounded like an American..what a total bitch! My impression is she was (at best) an expat American living in Paris whose daughter was French...or more likely, she was an itinerant American druggie who gave birth to the daughter, but didn't raise her, and had the great idea to get to know her by having a mother-daughter trip to Thailand. My guess is the daughter (if she's wise) will break all contact with her biological mom when she gets back to France.

I've used DTAC, TRUE and AIS, and in my opinion, AIS is the best of the three. However, it really depends on the coverage in wherever you spend most of your time.

I always give farang motorcyclists a wide berth because I have no idea what they are going to do next. Since they come from so many different countries with their different riding/driving styles, they are wild cards on the road. At least with Thais, I generally know how they're going to move, yield or not, switch lanes or not...there is a sort of national character to their driving that is more consistently predictable (for me) than the various visitors.

Now, see, I am deathly scared of riding a bicycle in this town on these sois and crowded streets. I consider the motorbike the best compromise between convenient go-where-you-want transport and avoidance of traffic delays. I rarely take the car anywhere in town except to go shopping, and I would rather walk than ride a bicycle.
