What is your Exchange rate "tipping point"?.
Barhop replied to Butch's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
$A not doing so well also. After reading your post, I became curious and so did a comparison of my two 2019 and two 2020 30 day trips with Singapore Airlines (booked through BYOJet). I book almost a year from travel as Singapore Airline prices seem to stay constant and I am able to select exactly the departures and stopover time that I want. Trips are ADL-SIN-BKK and BKK-SIN-ADL return. Every one of these trips has exactly the same timing. I think the pricing discrepancy between June and August is due to USA holidays, but not sure. Also, I only have 50 minutes in Changi on the way over, -
Next year will be my fourth year using Nam's taxi. Always safe, always reliable, waiting for me on arrival and early at the departure point, always.

What is your Exchange rate "tipping point"?.
Barhop replied to Butch's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Similar for me as I now do two 30 day trips during my winter months. Am currently on the second trip this year. With the girls, I now indulge every second day instead of daily and normally do repeats so don't get caught with a dud. -
Arrived ~17:30 Sunday 09Jun19. Was through in record time. One person being processed and one ahead of me. Finger printing took about half a minute. Through so quickly that had to wait, at a guess, for about 15 minutes before the cases even started appearing. Bought a litre bottle of Jim Beam duty free for 700B. Is that cheap for Thailand? Was in Nam taxi in no time. Nam's daughter (or sister - can't remember) was along as a passenger to see how the system worked before she starts driving herself.

What is your Exchange rate "tipping point"?.

Halfway through the first of two monthly trips this year. Have quickly padded my Thai bank account with enough baht for probably even two monthly trips next year also. Having just turned 67, I do not wish to plan Pattaya trips further than that. Guess I will ascertain my situation around this time next year with regards to health, my finances, the Pattaya scene and the exchange rate then, to see if I will proceed further. Next year will be my fourth year of trips and I am realistic enough to know that the "good life" cannot go on forever. So in answer to the thread, my (unknown) -
I use AIS and am on the first of my two 30 day trips this year. On arrival last week, I tapped into their "ON TOP PACKAGE: MAO 650B unlimited net, speed 4Mbps for 30 days" AIS has HEAPS of packages available so can only guess that DTAC has lots also. Have you sifted through their website? I use guest house wifi most of the time but when it starts dropping out, or getting too slow, I plug the mobile into the laptop and activate "USB Tethering" in the Settings and so run from my AIS package. I have the laptop hooked up to the widescreen tv, if I want to view on there. Hope this he

What to do if your Luggage doesn't arrive in BKK
Barhop replied to Butch's topic in Airline Discussion
Have large unique stickers/transfers on my luggage. Easy to find when it drops onto the conveyor but also makes it much less likely for a lowlife to want to walk around with it after he has stolen it... -
http://www.b737.org.uk/737maxdiffs.htm This site opens, but I was trying to find the difference between 737-MAX and 737-800 (the 800 used to be my second flight, Guangzhou- Bangkok; Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok or Singapore-Bangkok) and not being hugely techy it went over my head ? Luckly, SIA has upgraded its fleet and my future flights are A350-900 1st flight then A330-300 2nd flight. Used to be that on all of my three options the A330-300 was the FIRST flight then the crappy Boeing 737-800 second. Now with SIA, the new A350 is long and the A330 is short leg ☺️☺️? TBH, do not wish to wa

Best SIM Cards for tourists - Update for Feb. 2019?
Barhop replied to TF_Heinz's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Well Cannot believe it!!! Kept trying and trying AND trying for an Available Network... Had thought I might possibly get Vodaphone (current conjunct with TPG who I pay) but it was eventually Telstra who hooked up. Amazing... there was a bunch of sms numbers for connect and finally picked the correct one And no - had not enabled roaming. AIS says on my account that YOU HAVE NO ROAMING PACKAGES. TBH, am happy with that after roaming with TPG cost me a $A500 deposit last year. So it is possible to log into AIS account from Oz without AIS roaming enabled...very pleasing... To be -
Best SIM Cards for tourists - Update for Feb. 2019?
Barhop replied to TF_Heinz's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Thanks for the reply. Looks like I am stuck with what I have got. Tried the roaming with TPG last year and got hit with a deposit of $500 to enable. Eventually the deposit was soaked up by the monthly computer and phone accounts, so OK, but still a PIA. And even last year with roaming enabled, there seemed no extra access that enabled me to receive the AIS OTP. Bugga, the OTP is the only thing I need and yet they send advert SMS's often through TPG!?!?!? Oh well ? Ahhh, the different network attempt for sim2 sounded promising but got to ALLOW DATA ROAMING? with the warning YOU MA -
Best SIM Cards for tourists - Update for Feb. 2019?
Barhop replied to TF_Heinz's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Have tried that numerous times myself with no success. If I try to log into my AIS account, from either desktop or laptop, it requires input of a OTP which it has sent to my phone. I never receive this OTP while in Oz. Confuses me a little, as AIS is able to send me me advert style SMS's almost daily via my TPG SIM1. (Normally I have my SIM2 turned off, but have had it on whiile trying to log in this time). In my phone settings, it says: - "SIM slot 2; SIM name AIS; Operator AIS; Number unknown" Icons at top of mobile show Wifi On; SIM1 On; SIM2 blank. Just to really confuse the sit -
Best SIM Cards for tourists - Update for Feb. 2019?

Suggest you email DTAC, provide number and ask both the current BALANCE and VALIDITY. If your validity is getting close to expiry and you still have some funds in your balance, then ask them if they would extend the validity by taking some Baht from the balance. This is what happened to me a few years ago when I did not understand balance and validity while using AIS. Anyway, you're back in a few weeks. My validity was going to expire months before I was due back. Other option is to have an op on the ground who also uses DTAC to top up your phone. Normally each top up, however sma -
Best SIM Cards for tourists - Update for Feb. 2019?
Barhop replied to TF_Heinz's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Nice posts. In my third year of same AIS number myself. Always check before I leave last trip of year that validity extends until first trip the following year - *121# provides the balance and validity date (as I'm sure you know - added for others who may not...) Validity is most important as you would know - think it's only a few weeks past expiry then the number is DEAD FOREVER. Personally, and only my preference, I use https://mobiletopup.com/ for all my topups. Those orange machines scare me ? Website for me is very convenient and never a problem and their fee is very small ? -

Under 300 Baht ... And Good! (updated July 4, 2022)
Barhop replied to Evil Penevil's topic in Restaurants and food
Have stayed at Nova Gold myself so Jameson's was convenient at times. Forget the props name but he was Irish (with Thai ancestory ?) and a good bloke. He gave me history as to how he aquired the place, etc. But recall one afternoon he opened his arms indicating the whole place in a questioning manner. This was a few years ago, but I was honest and said that Irish bars were dying out in the West and farangs don't travel all that way to see another one. Ok, pizza bar now also, hmmm....maybe....but limited farang walkbys...generally only from close hotels...the place IS in the bloody sticks. -
Well said. Was a bit lucky myself. Chose one of the last Songkran days to go. Benefits were being in a taxi there and back and was completely dry while enjoying watching all the bedlam on the roads and also there were very few people there so many of my pics had no "peeps" in them. Of course no Songkran at Sanctuary - what a relief!!! Great day and a break from the wayyyyyyyyyyyy too long festival. So while being crap with a cam myself, I managed to get some nice pics. Off topic, am typing this on a PC via a very new Ubuntu and it has gone well...

Under 300 Baht ... And Good! (updated July 4, 2022)
Barhop replied to Evil Penevil's topic in Restaurants and food
Thanks for the review. Now I am curious to try. Had watched the soi dogs at the bottom many times, as well as roided up dudes swaggering down the stairs. Have drunk in a bar opposite many times and that's the view. Had assumed there was a gym up there. Oh well, now have a reason for a stroll upstairs... -
Thanks yet again. A few things here, I do not and will not ever use FB and if they are too lazy to add an email link then zero business from me. Cheers.

Thanks for the great info. Had a look at the makerspace site and they mention that if your country does not appear, then notify them for it to be added. I might be missing something here, but I looked all over their pages and links and could not find an email address anywhere... Any ideas?

Apologies for no introduction from newb, as well as not going through the 21 pages... but just streamed an episode that was riveting for me... The Bureau (French NOT USA) series 4 episode 5... has everything - for me anyway.... The series starts a bit slow but builds up gradually IMHO... I stream on SBS On Demand in Aussie, but being French origin, I'm sure it's available elsewhere...Enjoy

Nice post. When I was a child, the pure white beaches in my hometown in South Oz streched for hundreds of metres. Now there's reasonable beach only at low tide. All the expensive remedies seem to be just political expediencies. The stone outcrops you mention (as well as sand carting) have only moved the problem a bit further along over here. Really cannot see Pattaya solving its beach sand problem when the street drainage system is so dire.
