The curious case of the beefless Carl Jr's
dv34917 replied to MeGoDanceNow's topic in Restaurants and food
The problem may not be with the company. Recently Subway was out of beef and several other meat ingredients. The condition lasted for a few weeks. Now things are back to normal. Sounds like an import restriction or tariff fee increase problem. -
Sleep test at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya
dv34917 replied to nkped's topic in Doctors, Dentists, Clinics and Hospitals
There are several phone apps like snorelab and other voice recording software for the pc that you can use to chart your snoring or sleep apnea on your phone or computer. I was concerned about it a year ago because we suspect that sleep apnea was a factor in our father's fatal heart attack. I hooked up the computer to track every noise I made while I was asleep. When I awoke in the morning I checked the computer chart and saw that I only made one noise spike during the night. I remembered waking with a sneeze around 2 am. I was relieved that I did not have sleep apnea. It is a serio -
Sleep Apnea is indeed a serious ailment and is a leading cause of heart failure. Before spending a lot of money and time with doctors, first you should determine if you have sleep apnea. I was concerned about it because my father died of a heart attack. I left my computer on running a sound charting program while I slept. In the morning I reviewed the results and only saw 1 quick spike in sound. A person with sleep apnea will gasp for breath repeatedly while sleeping. This was a simple test that cost nothing and in the end meant I had one less medical problem to worry about.

God I would love to take a ride on one of those! Come to think of it, I just might try one of the bikes too.

Now that I'm older, here's what I've discovered
dv34917 replied to gs joe's topic in Funnies Section
The "Here after" comment reminded me of dating advice I heard on New York radio years ago: Listen, sweetheart, if you're not here after what I'm here after, then you're going to be here after I'm gone! -
Blue Parrot is gone buy Sue's Place next door now serves up their Mexican menu.

Jomtien Immigration Office changed !
dv34917 replied to Idefix's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Now if they would only buy a webcam and point it at the number board, then we could all go get breakfast and check our phones to see when our number is about to be called. No, wait a minute, that would be rational and logical and of course a direct violation of basic Thai principles. -
Roast Duck at Leng Kee Restaurant (update June 2, 2015)
dv34917 replied to Evil Penevil's topic in Restaurants and food
I have always ordered my duck dinner at MK. There it is served with a non-spicy dipping sauce and you can get it with the skin removed. I think the current price is 160 for a small which appears slightly smaller than Lengkee's medium, so price about the same. Will Lengkee remove the skin if requested? How about a dipping sauce that will not burn the tongue? I may switch given that Lengkee has 3 sizes - maybe the small would be good for a lunch. -
New name for the combined American Airlines and US Air Airlines
dv34917 replied to short's topic in Airline Discussion
It would be important to retain "American" in the name for marketing. It is also clear that U.S. airlines are becoming less and less competitive in the global marketplace. Therefore the appropriate name should be "Last American Airlines". -
Any hope of meeting some non-drinkers?
dv34917 replied to m4321's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
I think the guy just wants to go out to the clubs with other BMs that don't drink. It really isn't much fun to go out with a bunch of guys who are getting smashed if you are not drinking. As a teetotaler myself, I have had the same problem locating guys who are sober and fun-loving. M4321 - I would be glad to join you for a night out in Patts. Please ignore the criticism from the drunks. Alcohol has killed off most of their brain cells, hence their inability to understand such a simple request. -
Doc, Clinic or ENT for sinus check?
dv34917 replied to elvis2334's topic in Doctors, Dentists, Clinics and Hospitals
Try Dr Apichai on Pattaya KLang not to far from 3rd road. He helped me with my sinuses for a reasonable price. He only works for 2 hours 3 nights a week, so you need an appointment. HIs number is 038425046. -
Pattaya traffic engineers screw Jomtien-Pattaya route
dv34917 replied to MM's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
If they really wanted to solve the traffic problem from Jomtien to Pattaya, they would build a first-class shopping mall in Jomtien comparable to the ones in Pattaya. Most of the really bad traffic occurs from 5 to 8 pm and many of those drivers are going to the mall for shopping or for dinner. 6 shopping malls in Pattaya and 0 in Jomtien is the chief source of the traffic congestion. -
Bella Villa Prima on Soi 4 was 29k for one month or 19,500 per month if you stayed 3 months or longer. This info is a year old, so it may have gone up. It is a very good hotel and a short walk from the baht bus line when bringing girls back from W.S.

Best cure I have found for ear infections is Ciproflaxcin. Buy the Thai version for 100 baht for 10 tablets from most pharmacies. It is a general purpose anti-biotic, also good for colds and congestion if your phlegm is yellow.

Dave, I know you have broadband internet in the rooms. Do the wall outlets accept the western 3-prong plugs that come with laptops? I never seem to get those thai-to-western 2-to-3 hole adaptors to work.

Remember to fill out the customs arrival card they give out on the plane. A couple years ago I thought it was only for visitors to the U.S. and didn't bother to fill it out. Put me at the end of the very long line and increased my wait by probably an hour.

Alternative to Residence Garden
dv34917 replied to Jim245's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
Try Bella Villa Prima on Soi 4. I have stayed there several times and it has been the most reliable of half a dozen places I have tried. Of course, this being Thailand, you will not find the quality and sustainability of connection you enjoy back home. I have also heard good things about Pattaya Bay Resort but have not stayed there. -
I tried to renew a month early one year and they asked if I was leaving the country. When I said no, they said to come back in a couple weeks. So I guess you can renew early if you are not going to be here, but I don't know what the maximum time limit is.

I stayed at VT6 and did not like the lack of servces. No maid service, 24-hour room service, no lobby for socializing, not even lounge chairs at the pool. I moved to Bella Villa Prima on Soi 4. A standard room for 3 months is 19,500 and a junior suite (almost a one-bedroom) is 24,000. You get in-room internet, safe, pool, gym, lobby and all hotel amenities. Big C is across the street and the baht bus will take you everywhere else.

For me these are absolutely necessary: 1) Fast internet in the room 2) in-room safe 3) dead-bolt lock on the door 4) security requiring people pass reception to get to the elevators 5) daily maid service 6) balcony for drying wet clothes Extras that I look for: 1) location inside the loop (Beach road, Pattaya Tai, 2nd road) 2) washing machine in the building - much cheaper than sending it out 3) 24-hour room service 4) pool 5) gym

In Oneday's recent and excellent trip report, he mentioned that a new law requires a Thai driving license when riding a motorcycle in Pattaya. Apparently an international permit and farang country's license is ok on the highways but not in town. Is this true? Or is it another law that will be universally ignored, like prostitution. I want to try a motorbike on my next visit, but it seems a major hassle to get a Thai license. Any suggestions?
