1 year visa?

i'm planing to go to stay in thailand for 1 year or until my money runs out. i'm just curious what visa would i need to get to stay for this duration of time?

If you're over 50 you can try for a retirement visa or retirement extension of stay as they say. Otherwise, you can maybe get a double or triple entry tourist visa and then extend that one time. I don't think you'll get a year that way, but you'll get some time. Then, you can maybe start all over by flying out of the country.

 

Another thing you might think of would be to spend a few months in Malaysia, a few months in Cambodia, some time in Vietnam, etc.

That would be fun if you planned it out in advance.

i phoned the consulate today and it does appear the only visa i'm eligible to apply for is the multi entry visa. if i get this visa i understand i will have to do a border run every 90 days to either cambodia or laos, now the question i have is can i do the border run on my own or do i have to book through one of those travel agents that i see all over pattaya?.

You can do either, but things run more comfortably and smooth with one of the visa run companies. A delux run, with a comfy minibus limited to 6-8 passengers, including visa costs, breakfast and dinner, about 2500 baht.

You could make your own way there and do it yourself, but who do you turn to if things don't go smoothly.... as a loner, you might be a target for a bit of a squeeze.

 

I often fly to Singapore or Penang for a few days break. Going to Cambodia is also an option, either fly Air Asia to Phnon Pehn, or go overland.

Why is it you are not eligible to get a Non-imm 'O'? All you need is a letter from a guarantor?

It's up to the OP to post but I was under the impression he is talking about a Non-Imm O multiple, which does require visa-runs every 90 days.

Yeah Jacko, seems not drinking beer last night has clouded my reading ability...Re-read and he clearly says the only one is the multiple non-imm.

 

However,you should supply supporting documentation with the application...Category “O” = Copy of Marriage Cert (if married to Thai national) or Pension Book or Sponsor Letter

Air Asia has specials every month or so and for the same money,take a trip to Phnom Penh.Sure,you'll spend $25-30 for a room but you'll also see what PP has on offer.Sometimes it's more and sometimes less but usually close.I did one visa run at 6 a.m. with a "deluxe" van of hungover ex-pats-never again.I can think of better ways to spend 9 early morning hours

As an aside,one of the trips I booked was BKK-Hat Yai for 620.10 baht including reserved seat.I also have a Macau trip booked for 1980b including reserved seats.

They have great specials.

You can't "renew" a visa ;

- You can get an extension (at immigration in Thailand) for reason of Retired, Wife,... and you do need many documents ;

- You can get a New visa (in a Consulate abroad) and if at Hull you do no t need anything.

Every country should have a 'Hull" consulate which gives those out like candy.Too bad they won't handle out of country requests!Hell,I'd make an effort to stop there if they did.

If you're visiting friends or using LOS as a base to travel around, all you need is the self-certification page that is included in the visa pack download from Hull.

A friend of mine (36 years old) who is from the US has a student visa. I think it's good for a year. He's taking classes at a Thai language school in BKK. That might be an option, plus you'd learn some Thai.
