In Flight Entertainment on Thai Airways Flight

Recommended Posts

Hi all, now looking at a direct flight from Heathrow to Bangkok. Thai are offering a fair price but I've never used them before. My question is what IFE do they have on this flight ? Is it the screens in the head rests or screens for everyone ?

Don't know what aircraft they use but flight numbers are outbound #TG 917 and inbound #TG 910.

Thanks folks

Used these flights twice, October08 and April 09, TG917 and TG910.

Seems like the old planes i liked are getting changed.

On both flights in October08 LHR-BKK and BKK-LHR, there was no IFE apart from the crappy shared screen thats not worth jack. As i stated in another thread, i didn't mind, the flight was packing a lot of legroom.

In April 09, LHR-BKK it was still the old plane i like, but on the return trip i was onboard a newer plane, less legroom and the IFE was ok. As long as you can find something to amuse yourself that is.

In flight entertainment is a necessity in helping survive a longhaul, but if your cramped up like on Qatar, you won't be able to enjoy it. Thats why i fly thai and will maybe try Eva next April. I'll never fly Qatar or have a stop-over ever again.

I normally take the TG910 and 917 as well.

In around 20 returns over the past 4 years I have NEVER had seat back screens in Economy. The planes are old and really could do with an upgrade.

Having said that, because they are night time flights I don't really miss the entertainment. I get on half pissed, finish the job off during the next couple of hours, and typically fall asleep before 3 hours have gone by during which time I'm being fed or am reading a book. Normally wake up with a couple hours to go, have breakfast, then read the book again.

Hi mate,

as far as I am aware Thai are still running 747's on th TG917 route at least as of March this year . There was no IFA other than the communal screens. Eva who also fly the route have IFA's in the seatback and I fly with them for the first time in a couple of weeks so will know better then.

regards

They used A340s on the route earlier this year.

Hi CheshireTom,

You could be right, I think thai airways have one day flight and one night flight. I always take the night one and it's been the 747 both times (Oct '08 and March '09) but if memory serves the day flight was an airbus variant but that was back in march. The Thai airways website is still stating they use 747's on the LHR-BKK route though.

I may have my flight numbers mixed up and confusing the two flights.

Regards

TG917 & TG910 are the night flights & almost always 747s except a few months back when due to low numbers (I think) an Airbus was used

747s have no seat back screens in economy.

Done the trip 60+ times now and now I never use any inflight systems... board, eat, sleep, wake, eat, disembark

Simples!

Hi Regyai,

That sounds about right then for March this year..as I remember the plane designation on the day flight being an airbus not a 747 and serisously considered swapping as I am not a big fan of the older 747 facilities in comparison to the airbus. Then I remembered what long haul day flights are like and throught sod it and took the night flight instead.

My experience with Thai Air is that from LHR their 747's have no individual IFE. However, the rest of the service (seats, food & drink) is good. So if EVA or BA or Qantas is a lot more expensive then I would fly with Thai and use the money saved to buy a decent portable DVD player (£200) or netbook / laptop (£300) to plug the gap in Thai Air's service...

Not sure..... but perhaps its ping pong balls, double ended dildo's and lesbian jacuzzi action!

Or perhaps that was a dream I had once!

There is no way youll save £200 by flying on Thai over Eva! If anything I find Eva are normally cheaper than Thai! (just booked Eva for £422 for March 2010!). I much prefer Eva over Thai anyway, and as far as I know on Thais 747 there is no power source for your lap-tops anyway? At least there never was when I flew Thai? (economy).

No I'm not suggesting that you could save all the required money on one trip but if you were planning to go to Thailand regular (as a few people do) then investing in your own personal IFE (in the form of DVD player or netbook or IPOD and noise cancelling earphones) is worth considering. As for power outlets you are correct - I have never found them in any economy seats but you can get 4 hours out of most netbooks these days so enough for a couple of movies plus some games. Personally I would buy a good netbook for about £300 rather than a DVD player.

I agree with you on EVA, they are at least as good as Thai and do have some good prices. But I am looking at flights from LHR in late October and Thai currently have the best - at around £490 maybe £150 less than EVA....

  • 3 weeks later...

Flown twice with Thai and also with Emirates, Etihad, Qatar.

The flights for the last 3 were non-direct whereas Thai was direct.

It is really not on that these other airlines offer IFE on their non-direct flights of 7 or 8 hours whereas you are stuck on a 12 hour flight direct flight with Thai with nothing, apart from a communal screen in the roof or the stewardesses, to stare at.

You mean there's no connect 4? I have booked my next flight with Thai airways simply because they have connection times that suit me and are €200 cheaper than my prefered carrier Air France

I suggest you slip one of the stewardesses 1000 baht!
If you fly BA, that would only suit Villayouth! :D

For good IFE you can't beat EVA. State of the art system in all classes. :allright

Just a couple of problems with it.

On both the out and return jouneys I made in September, the system froze (just on my unit) after a short while and that was the end of it for me.

The apparatus for the IFE is contained in boxes under the aisle seats. I like to have an aisle seat but my legroom is uncomfortably restricted by these boxes.
