You couldn't have asked for it to be more exciting than that ..... mind you, there'll be some that still don't get it.

I don't even mind the horns anymore :clueless

And coming top hopefully means that they'll avoid Germany in the knock-out stages.

Really the heart-attack kids.

Right now, it's the Americans doing more for international soccer than anyone. Very exciting stuff indeed. Not to mention exposing refereeing down to its abysmal "standards". Not counting the disallowed goal which was a travesty, there were some really dodgy calls in that match, the missed elbow on Dempsey being only the bloodiest of many, both ways.

Have they ever tried two refs, like hockey, one in front of the play, one behind?

OK, Joe. Don't get carried away! One swallow (dive) doesn't make a summer and all that!

If I recall the previous match correctly, Dempsey was very lucky to have been on the field in the first place.

The actually have three refs (and one in reserve) - it's just that two of them are called linesmen. A good ref will position himself so that, as far as possible, he and one of the linesmen will be getting two angles on the play.

CT...how does it work in the World Cup?...do only the best officials move on to the next bracket?...or do the games still draw from the same pool of officials?

There's no hard and fast rule. They have to keep the officials in groups of three who speak the same language and then it depends on their performances in the group matches. There are loads of things to then take into account, the biggest matches will normally go to the 'big game' referees, but at the same time FIFA needs to ensure that the officials are as 'neutral' as possible for each game.

Joe that was one of the most blatant offsides ever.

Didn't see the replays then. Well, when you get a chance, you'll see the feet are clearly onside the entire time. You and the faulty linesman probably went by the lean of the bodies. ESPN360 has excellent views (among many others) you can fool the eye but not the technology.

I found this example quickly on YouTube.

Have a look, see if you want to reconsider "blatant".

That's why the "right now". The two US comebacks are the best SUCCESS story of the Cup SO FAR. There are better failures. And one hopes there will be much better highlights.

My point!! I went to a lot of trouble to point that out twice. A blown call is a blown call. I don't give a stuff who wins any of these matches, not a whit. I want to see the best football, and when the refs prevent it, THAT is when I am outraged.

In practice, the referee of record typically has massive disdain for the linesman of record. And actually, I understand that. It took years for hockey to adopt two referees PLUS two linesmen, and top-level basketball now has three equal-status refs. In the gridiron football system, it's kind of a zone officiating. Each official has a section of the field to look out for, and in addition they WILL collaborate at some length. It's rare to see soccer refs collaborate.

I'm not religious here, note, just commenting. There HAS to be a better way to officiate top international and club football than the noticable and paltry refereeing system currently used. The odd effup sure, but half a dozen a match? Too much. And I think technology has its place, but the less the better. Hockey ONLY uses it for ruling if the puck crosses the line, baseball ONLY if its unclear whether the ball cleared the fence -- that sort of thing. I hate the US gridiron use of cameras, it's way too intrusive.

Also, to be clear, none of the above is about cheating - I doubt there is much or any of that from officials at this level of competition.

Quite Gracious of you, Tom.

I am glad our "cousins from across the pond" made it also (I know more about those players than the US team!) even if second in the group may be tough to swallow for some!

I wish Defoe scored like that on my fantasy football league!

Well done to the USA soccer team, I hope they do well in the next round.

They were robbed against Slovenia with that disallowed goal but justice was done

Hub,

You give me way too much credit. I only chose to support the US way back last September when it became obvious that Scotland wasn't going to be qualifying for the competition. Back then, the US seemed to me to have a much better team than their likely underdog tag would reflect. That they got drawn in the same group as England was only coincidence and I think that people still underestimate how good they are as a team.

If they get to the quarter-finals, I'll rent in half a dozen cheerleaders for the night and send you the pics. :P

This team is resilient! I'm proud of them no matter the outcome on Saturday.[/b][/color]

The teams that are through so far all have given it very, very well -- but of the eight I frankly thought the Germans showed the least effort. In fact, if you want effort, the Serbians but especially the bloody Aussies who beat the Serbs went all out and then some - they deserve a damned good word and at least a brief standing O, the Roos.

The English were dead men wandering around in the second match but looked better today. I think the Germans will do them, but the sauerkraut eaters will have to step it up, they have been very flat - my opinion of course.

For those who don't think Americans take soccer seriously, I was in an engineering meeting today when one the engineer's phones started buzzing. A real no-no to have it on and to answer it is even worse.

His wife sent a text message. USA 1-0, the whole room, including top managers, cheered.

My boy was watching on Armed Forces TV, he said the mess hall at the base he's at was packed, the joint when nuts when the goal was scored.

A lot of English (almost exclusively) people are way, way behind the times on news from the colonies.

If they took it seriously, they would have been watching the match, not pissing around in some management meeting. Priorities and all that.
