Has the bad exchange rate put anyone off coming this year ? I know it has me I usualy have three weeks around june time But with the exchange rate being so bad i decided to leave it for anothet year My decision had nothing to do with being able to afford it I just didnt really want to pay near on double for everything So did any of you feel the same ? or was the thought of fanny to overpowering

We have been lucky in Aust our exchange rate went up my first trip i was getting around 26.8baht November was 29.5baht and i was told at the moment is around 28.6baht

Think this might be in the wrong section.....But.....Tickets from the States are crazy at the moment and I can't justify spending $10k for a two week holiday...I gotta buy four tickets!!! needless to say we'll be spending a long cold winter freezing in the snow!

There have been lots of threads and posts about exchange rates and people moaning. Lots said get over it, stop moaning etc etc. However it is a huge issue. My hourly rate has only dropped an £1 or 2 in the last 18 months but the exchange rate has really curbed my spending in Thailand. I have said it before that many Brits work on appriox a £100 a day budget which all in for a 2 week trip comes to approx 2200 - 2500 pounds. However a £100 a day now and you are constantly thinking of money. Yes it can be done but not like before. I have never expect the Thai's to compensate for the weak pound or dollar but I do find for what I like to do my £ goes a lot further in Angeles City and a result I will spend a higher proportion of next trip there. So the answer is YES the exchange rate matters a hell of lot.

The exchange rate could be a killer for Pattaya and barowners/restaraunt owners.I have been very lucky,lived here for 7 years and had 3 yerars of 74.9/2 years of 69.9 and the rest various exchanges so cant grumble.What i do know is the inflation is the same overall in the uk and i budgeted a 5% inflation per year for the next 25 years from retiring at 50,so i am on target so far.Yes,over the 7 years i could have been nearly 50% worse off but with investing cash when the thai baht was weak has helped me no end

I had a month this year in LOS and the cost of everything from food to pussy

seemed so much higher than ever before, even though I can remember a 39bt to the UK pound

in 1996.

Not a lot better here in Europe, the pound is up and down against the Euro so

its just a case of waiting and hoping things get better.

Too true mate. The days of spending 10 K baht night after night definitely belongs to the past with the current exchange rate. The Euro used to be approximately 50 baht and is now 40 baht. So 10 K used to cost me 200 Euro and now its 250 Euro. Makes a big difference when you're out for three weeks especially when spending a lot of time in Bangkok, where I easily spend 10 K on a good night out. Add to that the increased flight prices and Thailand has become a very expensive holiday destination for those that like to drink and party.

As has been states, Australians have faired well with the exchange rate and it has barely changed in the 5 years I have been going to Thailand, having said that our interest rates are just stupid at the moment meaning less money in your pocket.

 

But again it's all about balances and airfares are getting cheaper and cheaper, thanks to competition from Air Asia and Tiger. Today, Jetstar are offering flights from Melbourne to Bangkok for $279, plus $20 for your luggage, so if the return fare is the same, that's $600 return. That is cheap.

 

For me, living at the top of Australia, the nearest part of Australia to the rest of the world, but with the poorest options in terms of travel, Air Asia has just made my trips to Thailand even cheaper. I can now fly from Darwin to Bali, and Bali-Bangkok Bangkok to Udon Thani, cheaply, and more importantly in one day! Previously it meant an overnight stop in Singapore which, without whoring, amounts to at least 100 bucks and wastes a day.

 

I must say, since I took myself of the mongering market I have found my lifestyle in Thailand cheap, maybe it's just Udon Thani? I eat where my GF takes me, and eat well, and both the beer and food are cheap. I stay at a newish place with massive rooms for 480 B/night, I hire a 4WD from a local firm for 1000B/day.

 

Yes, some things are dear in Thailand, I haven't been to Pattaya for over 2 years now, but have been through Bangkok and it's expensive, but for me, Udon Thani is still a cheap place for me to spend a few weeks.

What is wrong with a person of western origin,who has retired to Thailand, airing his views? Being from the US I haven't really seen much of a down turn in my exchange rate. My first trip to LOS three years ago saw an exchange rate of 33 baht to the US dollar. My last trip (just returned home about a week ago) had the dollar going for 29.5 baht. A slight drop of about 4 baht to the dollar. A pittance as far as I am concerned.

 

I still came in under budget on this last trip, and I didn't skimp. I had a good time, bought lots of clothing, toys and such and enjoyed myself.
