Renewing Thai License on 30 day stamp.

Recommended Posts

Just thought I would pass a little info along. I tried to renew my 1 year license today and was denied. I was told I could make new but not renew my old one. I knew I wouldn't be able to renew for 5 years but was under the impression I could renew for one year with a 30 day arrival stamp. That's not the case and I would have to start from scratch and get a new license. This would involve the movie, written test/on computer and the driving test. Fuck if I'm guna go threw all that again. Had I known all this I wouldn't have ever bothered getting my license in the first place. Anyway just thought I would pass this along and maybe save a fellow BM or 2 some time. Had I had an international license this would have cut out all the testing. But I don't have one. Guess I'll be just like everyone else with an extra 500b in my pocket from now on.

Just to be clear. Yes you can get a license with 30 day stamp. No you can't renew.

NB: Seems this needs repeating every time any issue comes up. The treatment you get at a Thai government office depends on the office and on the person serving you, and the day of the week and the time of day. It can be, and usually is random.

That said. I've never heard of this. Never heard of a passport demand after the first licence issue, either. Was your licence past due?

You will need to show you Passport and Valid Visa for every renewal.

Well, no, actually *I* won't. That was my main point. But what *I* have to do may not bear on others, which was my other point. Still wondering if the OP's licence had expired. Or not. If his licence was up to date, it is very weird reasoning by his personal clerk of the day, but that was what I stated - that it's all so seemingly random.

To renew your licence you need the same documents as when you first got your licence, and yes a licence can be renewed on a 30day stamp, I know many who have, infact a mate did just this 2 weeks ago.

A 5yr licence will only be issued to a foreigner if you have a Non-Immigrant visa in your passport, or hold a Residence Permit. A 1yr licence is issued using any kind of visa or entry permit, and may be renewed (for 1 year) if necessary.

Documents needed for renewal of Thai driving license:

1. Passport + 1 signed copy of each - (a) 'face' page, ( non-immigration visa page, © current TM6 card & latest entry stamp page.

2. Photos are no longer required as they use digital photo images engraved on a hard 'credit-card' style permit. Ladies - please note that you must have your shoulders covered for official photos.

3. Letter of 'Fit-to-drive' from Doctor - 200 baht (must be less than 30 days old).

4. 1 residence certificate from Pattaya Immigration (dated within 30 days of renewal).

5. Money 665 (500+55) baht for car - 365 baht for motor-cycle.

6. Your old Thai driving license(s).

(A 'TM6 card' refers to the Immigration Departure card attached to your passport during your stay in Thailand. It has a reference number (TM6) that tells where & when you entered Thailand)

(The letter of 'Fit-to-drive' from a Doctor is again required)

o-o-o-o-o

Whatever the official of the day decides, I like to take along the stated requirements so as not to be out there wanting.

Don't understand what you mean.

You MUST wait you first temporary license to expire to renew it and get a 5-years one.

Not clear. To "renew" a Temporary to a Permanent license you only need your old Temporary license; no need of your home license or your International Permit. What kind of license did you friend get exactly?

Yes, we all know that, but the OP was clearly in the case of a new Temporary license because of no non-Imm visa.

The OP is about a new Temporary license after a first Temporary one ...

dont you get upto 90 days driving in thailand on an overseas licence. I presume you would also need an international driving permit showing that you were licenced for a motorbike and car, if thats what you were driving?
