i use IE chrome and firefox.

I would agree that chrome is currently best followed by firefox.

Firefox used to be best but for some reason is not as functional as b4.

IE is shit by comparison.

When my current pc gives up the ghost I will but an APPLE PC. Microsoft products are just crap.

What's best is what suits you. All the browsers are okay, and all of them MIGHT give trouble on your particular computer.   I use them all at various times. I do like Chrome the best - it's fastest,

Trust them how, or with what?   .

you may have a problem trying to buy an APPLE PC.

Chrome has been my default browser for years. Firefox got too bloated and the devs haven't been able to recover. The recently released Safari 6 is super-fast and has a few features that tie into your iOS device, if you use one.

I use Firefox 3.6.3... yes,I know it's out of date but it's not as resource hungry as more up-to date browsers and it suits me fine.

Have tried up to date browsers and still keep going back to FF3.6.3

Fully appreciate what your saying about it not being as hungry, but be careful that you're not leaving yourself open to a little vulnerability or something with an older version.

Resource hungry? Most modern computers have a huge amount of RAM. None of the browsers take very much of what is available. I have Firefox running and my computer is using 1.7 GB out of 8 GB.

It's not an issue of RAM usage, it is processor usage.

I run Distributed Computing projects which means I am running 6 cores at 100% 24/7 and after Firefox 3.6.3 they introduced some resource hungry tasks into Firefox which had a negative effect on the work unit times of the projects I am running, downgrading to 3.6.3 improved performance.

And if your interested I run 2 overclocked AMD Phenom II X6's and run Docking@Home and GPUGRID as my main projects. These projects are involved in the search for cures for cancer and HIV amongst others.

I'm not a techie by any means and I don't have a super computer. I used a system monitor for a while but neither the processors nor the RAM came anywhere close to maximum capacity. I uninstalled it.

Today I loaded Firefox and opened five tabs, opened Chrome and started Photo Shop and had a look at the performance monitor;

Those graphs are showing 5% CPU usage, probably with Photo Shop running idle and showing 5% CPU usage. My CPU's run at 100% 24/7 running BOINC projects and I have tweaked my systems for stability and performance. I found that downgrading to FF3.6.3 resulted in roughly a 5% performance increase.

So any idea what the later FF is up to that requires all this processor churning?

They introduced a task called "plugin-container.exe" to Firefox and it likes consuming processor time.

They introduced this task to stop Firefox from crashing when a plug-in crashed. It is possible to disable the task but I prefer the look of 3.6.3

  • 5 weeks later...

Got tired of not being able to do things like quotes and copy and paste on this and other forums using Google Chrome.

I'm on Firefox now and no issues as yet but I need to learn how to do some things on it.

Sometimes Chrome is better and sometimes Firefox is better. It seems like both eventually develop glitches. I use both and am using Chrome as my default right now. It's a sure bet that Chrome will have problems and I'll be back using Firefox. Both are great until the gremlins show up.

Sam, download a little program called TDSS Killer. It is from Kaspersky. It will remove that major pain in the ass Babylon. I complained to BitDefender that their antivirus cannot find or remove Babylon and was told that they don't consider it a threat. I asked them to re-consider that position.

I dont suggest anybody follows this advice as you will end up with two programs you cant remove and your pc will slow down !

Chrome may be good, but can you trust Google with your privacy? I doubt it. Imagine that the Google browser reports your every move online back to the mother ship (Google). Would you be happy with that?

I am having issues with my internet that are similar...have been for a month or more. I was thinking the internet connection was my issue, as if everything was going via an inefficient server/filter/maybe censorship. It isn't restricted to PT but that is where I feel the impact. If I hit 'Quote' 'Next Unread' 'First Unread' or something requiring a bit more work at the other end it seems to hang up or just forget altogether.

I belong to three different forums using IP software. Had issues 90% of the time (yeah, not 100% ) with 2 of them (this one and the Vancouver Canuck's board) and never ever had an issue with PI@NIGHT. I could post and make links on PI@N with Google but now that I'm using FF I can post here and on the Canuck's board np. Dunno if PI@NIGHT has been effected tho.

Ditto, especially here, but more than anything else it turned out to be the connection. I changed the router and the problems "magically" disappeared. Odd though, as IP Boards, running the most recent version of the software, were the only places I had problems

Jumping ship for another browser might work, but it's a shot-in-the-dark approach to what you've been experiencing. I'd want to see if I could first actually identify the problem with IE. No, I'm not defending IE; just saying that installing a new browser over some as-yet unidentified problem might or might not permanently fix things. I use both IE9 and Firefox (and occasionally Opera), and no performance problems with any of them. I routinely have up to 10 or 12 or even more tabs open in IE, and sometimes multiple windows with multiple tabs in each window. You might have inadvertently added a toolbar or something to IE (all too easy to do with some software installations, and some of these unintended add-ons are notorious...), or have something streaming in one or more tabs or another app entirely running that's tying up resources, or have loaded a web page with some flawed scripts, or even have some sort of malware based issue. (If that last is the case, you really DO want to identify the problem & address it, and not just install a new browser.)

Just my 2c. If you go with another browser (and I really do like Firefox), and start doing all the same things and going to the same sites you were going to with IE, and there aren't any more problems, then great. I've found that almost inevitably though, you eventually come to a site that just doesn't work well with anything except IE.
