Should we put off travel due to floods?

Recommended Posts

Hi

My mates and I are traveling to Pattaya on the 27th of this month. Flying into Bangkok Airport and then Mr Toom to Pattaya.

Just wondering if members think that it would be a good idea to put off the trip due to the flooding. Not really concerned about the water in Pattaya but more about not being able to get from Bangkok airport to Pattaya or back.

Any input would be appreciated.

Although my trip is planned for the second week of December, and it should be dry by then, but I’m thinking to cancel, I’m not worried about the flood itself but the effect that will follow on Pattaya

Yes. Thaiflood.com is just an excellent site.     Shortage of what? The water WILL be subsided by the first week of December. That's a given. Why would markets be less full? National Diet Plan?

They are now saying there is more flooding and rain to come. My neighbours are due to go the first week of December I will be advising them to cancel and go at a later date, even if the water subsides there still going to be shortage of supplies and markets won't be as full.

Its their first trip and they want do all the tourist things up north which alot of will be affected by swollen rivers.

If they can't cancel I will tell them head south to Pattaya and surround areas but there is going be shortage there to.

If it was myself and I was going to lose my money if I cancelled, I would still go a bad day in Pattaya is still better than a day here.

Yes good shout..a first trip would be dissapointing if you see potential and have limited access.

I want to go to Bangkok but have cancelled.

I'm heading back to Bangkok in a few days (I'm in Pattaya now) and am worried too about the flooding. Truth is that there is no clear answer because normal sources (media, public announcements) are unclear about the situation. As of the moment, 16 districts of Bangkok that lie outside the flood walls have been ordered to evacuate, however there is some confusion as to which 16 districts they are talking about.

For myself, I will be staying in the area they are going to let go of last (Sukhimvit/Ratchada) and are away from the river. Hopefully it will be ok.

There are several sites up that are tracking. Not sure if I should put a bunch of links up on the site, so google the following groups and you should be able to find out as much as anyone knows. "richard barrow thai flood" "thaiflood" and of course, the various thai news english language news agencies.

It's fine in Pattaya, Chiang Mai and areas North are fine, and down South (e.g. Krabi, Phuket) are fine. If you check the Thaiflood site, you will see a map. Same if you follow links from Barrow's blog.

Good luck with your trip.

There are no swollen rivers up north. Haven't been for months. December would be a TERRIFIC time to go to the North, because it's the best weather, not to mention that there are no shortages and the markets are packed. If packed markets are your thing, the North in December is your pig heaven, not to mention the total lack of floods, swollen rivers, etc.

Very true. EVEN if you send them directly into the worst flood Pattaya ever had -- although in December that is barely possible, unlike the North where it's realistically impossible.

I think you are doing your friends a disservice by asking them to change their plans when there is very little likelihood of existing flood problems by then.

And you foresee that even if the rain stop tomorrow in the northern areas that produce and materials that has been destroyed will suddenly reappear. That tour guides will be able to take on them boat tours and hill tribe villages that we in the past were unable to or had our plans change with far less rain this that pass week let alone this year. With what they want to do, they would be better of waiting and going when they will get value for what they are paying and inject money into areas that are going to need it.

I will send them south if they need to go but I know them and what they are expecting and I will tell them to wait.

North Queensland is still trying to recover from the cyclone and the flooding in the south six months ago due to the fact we are the least important. The flood repair money and builders are spent in south.

The Thailand floods are affecting us because parts that are made in Thailand for Chinese company aren't get out (yes already started)

People who still have to work in the real world know this.

There is a post on this board about not being able to get baby formula in Pattaya already so in a couple of weeks time I think some things are going to be still in short supply and I want them to have the best time possible and will recommend delaying this holiday so that they will return like we have. They are bikers ( belong to the HOGS) and would love to travel with them to Thailand. Febuary is bike week if they can delay till then it would be a bonus.

To the people that frequent this board would more than likely not be affected by what they plan to do.

You miss the point: There haven't been rains for months in the North. There are no rains, no floods in the North. In December, there won't be a sign that there were rains in April and floods in July (as there are EVERY year in the North, and this year was no worse than most years in the North). In December in the North, talk will be starting about the drought.

This is a good summary of the weather and also a blog from some one actual in Bangkok.

http://www.thaitravelblogs.com/weather-in-thailand/

I was using this (Link) to see what to expect, and it had been serving me well. But now the Rayong Radar has stopped updating since the 20th.

It forewarned me of quite a few thunderstorms before that.

This seems to be re-inforced by a post by Gary in another thread.

Chiang Mai is North

Yes it is. It's in the North where there is no rain and no flooding. Kind of curious why you sent along newspaper stories from September when we're now going into November. Wassup with that?

This is today's summary. This is for the North. No floods. Cool. Great weather. Beautiful place to visit. Tell all your friends about it, the North of Thailand including Chiang Mai is magnificent weather right now.

It's back. Hey, good one. I hadn't seen that one before. This one here is for the North. One tiny little rain cloud as I look right now. Dry, cool - excellent place to visit right now and for the next few months.

oh and to reiterate, it's fine, just don't go to Bangkok. Once you hit the airport go straight to Pattaya and if you want to ride or explore, head South or East.

Or North of course. It's GREAT in the North right now.

oh yeah :D I'll be in CM in a couple weeks, after I hit Phnom Penh (holiday & visa run). Looking forward to it.

I was going to drive back down to Bangkok and see Ayuddaya (planned months ago) but scratch that! I'll be cancelling the car.

edit: scratch taking luxury bus or train as well.... I guess I'll be flying in and out of Chiang Mai :)

As you know your friends and know what will make or break a holiday in Thailand for them, then go with your gut. There's a lot of folk on all these Thai forums who are not looking at the bigger and longer picture.

If I was a 2 week sex tourist I'd be flying in with bells on, but I'm not. I live here and eat at my home and fly in/out every 28 days and like to have my home stocked with things I like, and like to be able to take a stock of things I like back to work for 28 days, and I'm getting concerned.

Yes Chiang Mai will be lovely right about now, but as the major wholesalers and suppliers for the country seem to be struggling to keep supermarkets stocked with basics you are going to find shortages and profiteering anywhere you go in Thailand from now probably well into December.

Your friends are members of HOG? Then what are they doing coming in December... no-one goes to Chiang Mai Bike Week(end) any more!! Tell 'em to come over in Feb for Burapha Bike Show..... Pattaya will be the place to be for anyone who likes 2 wheels!

just seen on UK Sky News the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has just posted:

"We now advise against all but essential travel to the city of Bangkok and the 26 provinces in Thailand affected by flooding. Our advice against all but essential travel to the city of Bangkok does not include transit through Suvarnabhumi international airport."

Surprisingly good advice really, given that it does come from a government. Best to head up North straightaway, where the weather is brilliant, and the ground is dry. Mind you, those southern beaches are pretty nice, too.
