Good Meal at Pig and Whistle in Jomtien

This isn't a restaurant review. I've only eaten once at the Pig and Whistle in Jomtien, but the meal I had was very nice at a reasonable price, so I thought I'd mention it. I stopped in for lunch Sunday and choose the Special of the Day, which was a choice of roast beef or roast pork, with Yorkshire pudding, roasted or mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, broccoli and gravy. It came with a small link of sausage wrapped in bacon and a small square of bread stuffing. I haven't had much luck with beef in Pattaya, so I went with the roast pork.

It wasn't the most attractive plating of food I've seen, but it tasted damn good and that is what is most important. I would have preferred the gravy on the side, although that's no big thing. The meat (five slices) was flavorful and juicy. Unfortunately, the gravy hides the meat in the pic.

The veggies were fresh and not over- boiled. The gravy, stuffing, potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were delicious. A very generous portion, too.

 

It cost 225 baht. A bottle of SML at 75 baht brought me to an even 300 baht, not bad for a big meal of that quality. I may go back this Sunday to try the roast beef.

Has the Pig & Whistle on Soi 7 shifted to Jomtien? The best Fish n Chips in Pattaya IMHO with a good glass of Stout!

 

A Jomtien branch opened on Thap Phraya Road in October last year. About the same menu as P & W on Soi 7, but I don't have much experience eating in either of them.

Thanks....as it's Lent I have piously given up just about everything 'cept shagging. But Sundays I can go for it.....My last Sunday Roast was at the Punch and Judy. The food was good there, if a little more expensive........but I had the lamb. However, the house wine was horrible and even a parsimonious git like me couldn't finish it.

I liked the P&W in Patts so I'll give this a try. I hope to post a photograph of an 'empty' glass of wine in my report.

Just about everything at both places is good food, they do a great breakfast and great sandwiches. I have never had a bad meal ther in over 8 years. For those who live in Pattaya and have cooking facilities at home. The Pig on soi 7 has its own butchers upstairs and they sell their own bacon and sausages by the kilo at 250 baht per kilo. Its the same sausage and bacon as they use on the breakfasts. I think its the best around for the cost

The best Fish n Chips in Pattaya IMHO with a good glass of Stout!

 

I decided to try the fish 'n chips at the P & W in Jomtien. It was another good meal.

Fish 'n chips is a passionate subject for many posters on various boards. I don't claim any expertise when it comes to what is proper or authentic fish 'n chips. There a plenty of members who are better informed in that respect than I am. I can only judge by one standard - how it tasted - and it tasted good to me. That day, fish 'n chips was the daily special at 225 baht. The everyday price for the same meal was 270 baht, according to the menu.

 

The fish fillet had a great batter - light and deep-fried just long enough to give it the right degree of crispiness. There was no oily taste or texture to it. Inside, the fillet was moist but not watery and flaked nicely. I don't know what kind of fish it was. The menu board said "white fish fillet." When I asked the waitress, she gave me the same answer.

 

The co-star of the fish 'n chips duo - the chips - weren't quite as good as the headliner fillet. The chips, cut American style, should have been fried a bit longer. I don't know what the standard is for British chips, but in the U.S., real French fries should be given two plunges in the boiling oil. The first round of frying, in oil that isn't too hot, blanches the potato strips to get rid of rawness and reduce water content. A second shorter dip, in much hotter oil, gives the fries their crispy surface and makes them fluffy inside.

 

The supporting player in the Pig & Whistle's fish 'n chip act - the peas - were very good, as was the extra - homemade tartar sauce. The peas had been boiled just long enough to take away rawness but not their flavor. They weren't overly soft. I prefer malt vinegar on my fish 'n chips, so I only tasted the tartar sauce. It was fine, tangy but not overpowering.

 

I don't eat fish 'n chips very often, maybe a half dozen times a year, so I won't be rushing back to the P & W for another order. But when I do get a hankering again, the P & W will be on my short-list of acceptable restaurants for fish 'n chips.

Good summary, although I am concerned by the ambiguous or evasive statement, white fish fillet. Sometimes you are getting a cheap freshwater fish (Basa), or another freshwater fish. It can all look good well battered, but sometimes I have had this soft almost mushy flesh. Cod is great, and the local grouper would be too, obviously sea fish. Bad experiences and menus that don't specify the type of fish it is, have put me off ordering my homeland staple.

:bhappy I stayed in Jomtien at View Talay 2 for a few nights and went to P&W as it was just across road-it's also a sports bar with sports on different screens.All meals were good,which is more than I can say about P&W on Soi 7-had a couple of horrible meals there-Rosies next door is much better.

I've eaten there heaps of times. The fish and chips is crap. Fish had thick batter full of oil. I ended up cutting it off and just ate the fish inside. The chips are good. I tried the fish n chips grilled. Still had a terrible thick batter.

 

The fillet steak with chips and salad is good. It doesn't mention it on the menu but it comes with a pepper sauce that is very good.

 

Cottage pie is good. Bangers and mash is good.

I will only post this because others have mentioned soi 7 P & W. I had a right downer on the place for years due to 2 unpleasant experiences. Prior to these experiences I had used the place ages before Rosie o'something opened next door..

 

Won't go into the bad things unless someone asks...I am not into bashing places..( Other than TQ1 and Rock house but I digress) but I needed a good fill of farang food about 2 weeks ago before heading home.. a 5 hour drive..

 

I ordered the breakfast with extra bubble and squeak...bloody hel!l it was bloody delicious, bloody spot on! and bloody well near the real thing...which is something you can rarely say about a restaurent or pub. Real bubble and squeak is a Monday or Tuesday fry up of all the Sunday dinner left overs mashed together and slow fried but what was presented had all the right textures and all the right tastes and all I can say is well done chaps and som nam na me for staying away so long.......but I aint gonna let you off your problems one of which still exists...and it makes me ANGRY!!

I found the reports of best fish and chips in Patts to be totally untrue,but the breakfasts are the best that ive had in a long time,could not fault them

Me and my English mate are constantly amazed how many average or poor restaurants get recommendations.

After 3 days of fried rice and Pad Thai a steak pie and chips covered in HP probably tastes good any place. So my thought is many people are not pursuing haute cuisine.

HP, brown sauce, Coleman's mustard, tinned beans, Marmite. Brits are more famous for condiments than food.

 

Does no one even taste the food anymore?

Some areas are well known for putting ketchup on everything. I came from a household where the HP/Daddies only came out for the Sunday AM breakfast......unless there was a weekday fry-up for tea.

I always thought they did more of this in the USA. French fries had to be eaten with fingers and ketchup. The GF there wondered why she ate salads and put on weight, could have been the blue cheese dressing eh?
