Popular Thai Myths - Pattaya Snopes

Recommended Posts

Much more of this and I predict you'll be publicly put on Torque's ignore list. Which means he can deftly, (deafly) avoid your calls to back up his accusations.

Perhaps another Thai myth. Ignoring things make them go away.

We've all read the comments at some point or another, Thais are this, Thais are that. So in Snopes style, what are the popular myths, and do they have any basis in fact or are they just establishing

I didn't pretend anything - you really shouldn't come out with such accusations. Because I've never visited Brazil, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Likewise, because you haven't heard something, does

Generalizing is never accurate. Do all Thai women want a farang husband? Some do and maybe many do. My wife had a Thai husband and according to her he was a nice guy but he was stupid and couldn't man

Generalizing is never accurate. Do all Thai women want a farang husband? Some do and maybe many do. My wife had a Thai husband and according to her he was a nice guy but he was stupid and couldn't manage money. Her sister married a Thai guy who was a very talented construction worker who could build anything. Unfortunately when he had some baht in his pocket, he refused to work until he was broke. If his wife said anything about him being hung over and the kids having nothing to eat, he would beat the shit out of her. The house was in his name. He sold the house and left his wife and kids homeless. He took the money and ran off with his girlfriend. I witnessed this first hand. This was the first time I ever heard my wife say that this was the reason that she wanted a farang husband. Her friends always ask me to find farang husbands for them. Do Thai ladies want to leave Thailand and go to the promised land? Don't believe that. My wife would probably go but she wouldn't be happy about it. This is her country and she is happy here. After ten years with this women I am always a little surprised that she still puts up with a crotchety old fart like me.

We had a thread similar to this one a few years ago: What are the biggest urban myths in Pattaya / Thailand?

Two of the widespread misconceptions that were mentioned then - and are still often repeated on the various boards - were:

1) It's "Thai logic" for Thai business owners as well as the girls to raise prices in low season because there are fewer customers; and

2) U.S. military personnel gave the Pattaya nightlife and commercial sex scene its start during the Viet Nam War years.

Both are false and have been disproved many times. There's no evidence that any Thai business or individual has raised prices when faced with fewer customers to keep revenues at an even level. To label it "Thai logic" is simply disparaging of Thai people. The origin of this particular contemporary legend is probably a wind-up post on a punter board that became accepted as truth.

The legend about Pattaya and U.S. military personnel is probably based on confusing Pattaya with Kilo Sip, a small bar area outside the then U.S. airbase at U-Tapao . It's also possible the timeline got mixed up and some people transposed shore leave by visiting U.S. navy and marine forces in the 1980's to the Viet Nam War years. The first go go bar didn't open until 1978 and during the Viet Nam War, there were only a couple of hotels and a handful of drinking bars in Pattaya.

Thai's can't read maps.

While it is true many Thais cannot read maps, it's also true many Americans cannot point to Canada on an unlabeled map.

I do know Thais that can read maps and determine directions based on it just fine.

many Americans cannot point to Canada on an unlabeled map.

Or at least get a pained look and probably think you are being intentionally cruel if you use cardinal directions to tell them how to get to a destination.

Bullshit, everyone knows it's just across the lake from Cleveland.

LMAO!

And how many can find Cleveland...or Ohio or even the Great Lakes?

And who would buy an unlabelled map?

One misconception that is gathering steam is that the ASEAN Economic Community agreement set for 2015 will "open the borders" for thousands of girls from Laos, Cambodia, Viet Nam and the Philippines to work in Pattaya's bars, with prices dropping as a result.

In fact, the AEC won't have any influence on P4P in Pattaya, at least not in 2015. Some Western visitors to and residents in Thailand are under the mistaken impression that the AEC is equivalent to the European Union and Schengen Area. In truth, the AEC has far more limited goals. It is more like the pre-Maastricht European Economic Community. The AEC will mostly affect regional financial markets and the free flow of capital, not people.

The are few categories of skilled professionals that will be able to work freely in any of the member countries, but that doesn't include prostitutes. The citizens of ASEAN countries haven't needed visas to visit countries under the ASEAN umbrella for quite a few years. They could come today to Pattaya if they wanted. There's absolutely no reason to think there will be a wave of non-Thai girls hitting Pattaya in 2015.

I was talking to the Thai lady who does my gardening when she arrived without her usual 2 Cambodian helpers.

She said they had gone home and when I suggested they didn't have 'papers' she said yes have passports... and that was all they needed to work in Thailand. I thought otherwise, ie only a restricted professional sector could mover around and work freely around the Asean countries.

I must admit I am coming across a lot of 'workers' who don't speak Thai now and am still unsure what the regs are.

The AEC won't change anything specifically related to the free movement of labour except as you indicated. What will potentially have an impact is the success, or otherwise, of the full implementation of the ASEAN Open Skies Agreement. If it's affordable/practical for the girls to move around, they will - of course, that includes Thai girls seeking their fortune somewhere else other than Pattaya. I would be hesitant to get worked up about the prospect of an influx of cheap pussy anywhere in Thailand, as "cheap" usually means trafficked. Personally, I'm more interested to see if we have more Indonesians moving around in the Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai Triangle.

I don't know what the regulations are, either. I recall reading that Thailand has roughly two million legal and registered aliens in the kingdom, with estimates of illegal immigrants between three and five million. The illegals come overwhelmingly from Burma, Cambodia and Laos.

True...I know a few cambo, myanmar girls in the bars works today without any problems....

I know a few farangs who stay here without any visa too. That doesn't make it legal. I also know a well off farang who has a farming operation. Thai farm workers have priced themselves out and he employs Lao workers. He had and has to jump through all sorts of hoops on a regular basis to employ them legally.

When I go to do my 90 day report at Rayong Immigration , I am often astounded at the vast number of Lao/Cambodian girls getting their 90 day stamp , usually accompanied by a Thai minder . Many of them are employed in the factory complexes around but many are otherwise employed .

I'll be there for four months this year. I won't hear anyone stating what you claim to be a myth. A myth is something prevalent, not something only an idiot believes.

That said, what were you suggesting when you claimed ... girls all over Thailand were "pulling out all the stops to snag the dream of a lifetime", i.e. you. I must confess, I have never had any mother wheel out her female family members in anticipation of snagging me. There again, maybe I'm not "the dream of a lifetime".

If you want, I can change the OP to ... "All over Thailand girls will pull out all the stops to snag this great opportunity ... torque"

Absolutely. I don't drink, smoke, or gamble. University Professor. Athlete. You'll find that combination is very highly respected in Thailand. None of those are "Falang".

That's why you could not quote me saying "falang" was the reason I had so much opportunity for marriage. You are not a very honest person and that's another thing Thais don't like much. When they see you going so far out of your way to pretend people are saying the opposite - they know you are not a person they can have trust in.

You need to read up on your definitions, Professor.

I think you've mentioned it before. More than once.

So, what? It doesn't make you any better than any other BM - no matter how hard you try to convince anyone otherwise.

That's why you could not quote me saying "falang" was the reason I had so much opportunity for marriage.

I didn't try to. As it is, you had no more opportunity for marriage than some geezer sat in a bar in a beer-stained Singha vest.

You are not a very honest person and that's another thing Thais don't like much. When they see you going so far out of your way to pretend people are saying the opposite - they know you are not a person they can have trust in.

Thais seem to get on just great with me - no problems whatsoever. :thumbup

Like I said, you aren't very honest. YOU are the one who started this with a claim about POPULAR myths, in both the title and the OP:

So in Snopes style, what are the popular myths,

All Thai girls hate Thai men/are looking for a farang husband. .

I have been hammering you for choosing your number one POPULAR myth to be something that is not a popular myth at all.

You also just quoted someone who, just like you, is pretending this is a myth... but not quoting anyone saying it. Instead, it is another lame straw man asserting that it is a myth but disagreeing with it. So that's where you find this so-called myth: stated by people are "disproving" it.

We have yet to see where anyone is seriously asserting all Thai girls want to marry Falangs, let alone being a POPULAR myth.

Get a grip on why you are being slammed so hard by so many lately: being intentionally nasty after asking people their opinion

The point was to explain Thai girls are attracted to a lot of things having nothing to do with being a Falang per se, which you know is true, but you are being argumentative just for spite. That's right, in the very post you quote-mined from I would have been saying that the girls like a guy that does not drink. This is a statement about what Thai girls like, not something I am claiming moral high ground with. I couldn't care less that you drink. And you know that. It's this purposefull dishonesty and nastiness that people are responding to in your threads.

I could always take a leaf out of your book and put them on ignore.

Obviously - since I've never claimed otherwise, there isn't a lot of explaining to do.

I couldn't care less that you drink

Or that I don't? But you seem to believe that others care that you don't. And that you are a bit of a racing snake - apparently.

You see these comic book versions of Pattaya, like the one by the NGO's claiming all the girls are underage sex-trafficked prisoners doing 300 men a day, all anal, for one handful of rice.

I've never heard that. Got a link?
