Overnight Thai Fares have dropped over £50 for flights in October/November

Now selling at around £477 return Ex LHR

Qatar are offering a 3 day sale on their website but prices are still £50-£60 via Internet agents. I suspect if the embargo continues prices will start sliding soon.

I bit the bullet and have just booked for 11 Feb to 12 Mar with EVA through Travel Trolley (LHR/BKK) - £487 return.   No doubt the price will drop, but I remember the fares of old, and under £500 st

I wouldnt even try, but if its realy necessary for February I would book ASAP. Mid Feb (Feb 16th) is Chinese New Year and probably a good week or two either side will be high season rated. Jan/Feb h

Paid for my next flight yesterday. For the first time in about three years I will be flying Thai Air. This is my only direct flight but with prices $700/$800 above what I expect to pay I have avoided them. The final price was under NZ$1000

I think the reason for the high prices is simply supply. Heathrow and London between them have at least 7 or 8 direct or connecting flights to Thailand every day and that realy controls the pricing.

Manchester has at least 7 Mid East connecting during summer season.

No direct yet.

That's the price you pay for living on the edge of the world. :D I was there recently. Paid £400 with THAI from London to AKL. Would have been rude to turn it down.

Interesting place, but shame on your for defiling British Fish & Chips. Not a single Fish & Chip shop supplied hand cut chips. In fact some prided themselves on supplying McCains frozen chips!

I "normally" book with West East,

Im going in September........I am then going in late Jan/early Feb.....I "normally" will book my Jan/Feb. trip in September.ish time....

I usually go with Thai, as I prefer their flight times, and heathrow is relatively easy.......ish! for me to get to..

Do you reckon I may get a better price if I was to book later GP?

I keep a bit of an eye on the prices, and Im always happy with the fares I get...........but of course ! if they can be had any cheaper....Im all ears!

For those who enjoy travelling as opposed to just getting there, you can often pick up some decent bargains flying via European cities.

For example, you can currently fly direct with THAI from Scandinavia for £320. For flights up until the end of November.

Earlier in the year flying via Geneva you could pick up a super peak season flight, say from the 18/12/17 to 05-08/12/18 for £320 to £350 return. Ok, with Kuwait Airways, but comparable flights now from the UK are from £660 sharply upwards with similar airlines.

So there are saving to be made for those who can be flexible.

I have always understood that living on the edge of the world required some sacrifices. Having said that I recall going to the UK in the mid nineties and getting about 32 pence for my dollar. Today I would get 55/56. On that basis which economy do you think I prefer being part of?

Kuwait Airways and Kuwait City Airport have poor reputations.

Sometimes risk with the big bargains but I would never consider more than one transfer........

Mixing carriers, well I always feel you risk losing baggage.

I have no idea. I still prefer the UK.

We have easy and relatively inexpensive access to the world. The perceived value of my house in Central London has risen considerably, so I could comfortably sell up and retire to New Zealand.

Whereas you are somewhat a captive audience there. Not a bad place to be stuck. Though the weather is somewhat changeable.

So it's not just about whether you get 32 or 55p for your dollar, is it?

In that time, the value of one of my apartments has risen nine fold and that is no joke. Even I am shocked. One of the reasons for this is that they are older and more spacious one bedroom apartments, so give people a lot of leeway. So they are selling for nine times the purchase prices of twenty years ago.

So which economy do you think that I prefer?

Not knock new Zealand at all....apart from the awful fish and chips and the strange weather and the overly expensive food in the shops. ;)

This from Zoopla;

Of course I have not included the address of the apartment.

But it is the one bedroom flat in London.

Thanks but also note that a crap home in Auckland is now in the million dollar range. It is now considered one of the most unaffordable cities in the world so we all have our problems or indeed our advantages. By the way, NZ fish is magnificent which is why I cook my own fish and chips so that isn't an issue either.

The planes on that route are new and I'm sure the airport is no great shakes, but the saving of £300 or more could be the difference that makes a holiday affordable for someone or whether they chose to go at all.

Mainly would like to go away over that period to avoid Christmas and New Year alone at home, but the cost is often prohibitive.

As to luggage, sometimes you can check it through all the way and sometimes you have to check it in yourself at the second airport.

Either way, it's up to the individual to decide what suits.

As I stated in the first place, the main issue is isolation and that it is so expensive to travel and see the world.

Also, there is really no need to exaggerate, a crap home in Auckland is not one million dollars. I was there last November, so I know what things cost.

If you want to compare London prices to prices in Auckland, you will soon see the difference.

It may be relatively expensive, but it does not compare to London.

The country’s most expensive suburb Herne Bay has an average house price of $1.85 million, 25 times more expensive than the average house price in the country’s cheapest suburb Patea.
The most expensive house to sell last year was a beach-front mansion in Herne Bay which sold for $8.3m, which was 800 times more expensive than the Ohai, Southland property which sold for the lowest price – just $10,000.

An apartment south of the river in London is nearly double that price; http://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/42747969?search_identifier=73451d12acef89bc7ba4261fa8aa0a9f

Your million dollar 'crap' home in Auckland will get you a two bedroom apartment in one of the less expensive suburbs of London. You'll need at least a million pounds to buy a house in one of the poorer suburbs and frequently a lot more.

On the other hand quality food is cheaper in the UK, as are many other items.

I took an apartment at The Metropolis in Courthouse Lane and travelled extensively around Auckland, so I do have a good idea of the city.

New Zealand has some amazing nature and is definitely worth a visit. Don't know if I would want to live there.

Anyway, let's get back to discussing bargain fares. :D

Sorry but it wont work. Direct flights have been tried from Manchester since the 80's and they always get dropped. . I suspect 1 flight direct per week might make it but there just isnt the overall traffic from Manchester to justify any more than about 1.

Im due to fly in late october and I wont book untill September when prices will drop as airlines fight to fill any unfilled seats. Isnt Septembet Half term time? If so then prices will stay high for that period and a weel or so either side.

OK cheers for that. Im due to go around the end of October but, as I said I wont book untill September unless one of the airlines panics and drops their prices.

IIWY I would wait untill early August to book. BUT as stated keep your eyes on the prices as some airline may panic and sell off empty seats as BA did several years back when I got a return ticket for the wife for around £375. Thai have also done that too

Good, let's keep it to airline prices.

Currently I can fly to New Zealand from the UK for just over £500 with Qatar. Only problem is that I have little interest in a Doha stopover. That's why the THAI deal for £400 was excellent for more than just the price, as it allowed for a twin centre trip stopping over in Thailand.

That was my original point before we got sidetracked by the economy and property prices. That you don't have access to these kind of deals, having to pay NZ$1000 for a flight to Thailand.

But on the other hand it's an amazing place. So don't go away all offended. ;)

Not even a stopover en-route to OZ or China?

I seem to see a few familiar faces on both of my flight legs to and from Manchester.
