  1. The problem with that in England or France is that the players are expected to play an inordinate amount of competitive rugby for their "greedy" clubs. The RFU and the French version are reluctant to exercise the "authority" over the Premier league clubs that the Southern Hemisphere unions do, due to ever-present threats of forming break-aways. On average an active International player for any English or French club will play more than 50% extra games than their Southern Hemisphere counterparts. The Welsh are only marginally better off in that respect as are the Scots. Only the Irish compete w
  2. He was Fergie's first recommendation to replace him at United! To be honest though; I reckon they would do better by getting shot of Ashley, and maybe have a mass clearout in the championship for a season.
  3. As a stab in the dark; are you in anyway related to the late Charlie Cattenach, owner of the Hideway bar and guest house way back in the late 60s, when it was situated aroundabout where the Carlton hotel is now?
  4. Hopefully Costa will get another retrospect ban again....... If only to get Moaninho wittering again!
  5. Well I got the wrong match yesterday!.... but bottom line was that I couldn't get tickets for the Brighton venue Boks/Japan. I was originally after that one on the South coast prior to my football sojourn today at Southampton. France looked pretty serious though, and although not a great game against Italy the atmosphere at "Twickenham de Francais" was again excellent; and they still managed to smuggle that cockerel into the ground! Today's football match will almost certainly contrast with typical hate-filled tribalism probably being the order of the day! Off to Gloucester on Wednesday, w
  6. Gary's previous thread got debunked from here. This one is in much the same vain. I use sarcastic humour to excess at times, but even I don't see the original post as humorous. Maybe just a "Transatlantic" thing! :
  7. Burgess is probably destined for the bench throughout this world cup due to his relative inexperience and also versatility in either back or loose forward play. With the huge pay differential for top players in Union compared to League in UK (and possibly France later on) I very much doubt he will return to League. The Welsh (in particular) supporters of my era feel a touch of "schadenfreude" with respect to top League players coming across to Union nowadays!
  8. Great atmosphere at "Twikkers" last night. That was a good game for England (notoriously slow starters) to begin with, better than a walkover team IMHO. I hadn't realised just how enormous a man that Nadolo is, until seeng him in the flesh. Makes Jonah Lomu look like a lightweight! Back to Twickenham again tonight for France v Italy I fear it may be a bit of a "bore-fest" for the neutral.
  9. Meets with typical humorous and indignation in equal amounts! I like it, but won't be doing it !! Would have been better in the Sports section Gonzo or Mods ?
  10. Weird !! Just looking at those photos of the "bendy" tower block gave me a sense of inebriation.
  11. My "grannie in law" reckoned that you could brush your teeth with hydrogen peroxide. We think she was talking in earnest !
  12. Here is a daft one. I may well have to make a quick trip back home to Dubai mid Rugby World Cup. The Emirates price for this trip is £5021 return 1st Class. The return quote for Bangkok over the same period (exactly the same aircraft for the LHR-DBX leg) is £4589! : So in effect they should pay me £432 to fly from DBX - BKK Other classes are similar but not so pronounced!
  13. United game a real "match of two halves" No real game-changing substitutions so it must have been a half time boot up the arse. Scousehampton remained f'ing awful throughot the match. Rodgers is beginning to look out of his depth, and appears to have learnt little during his tenure. I don't think Liverpool will ditch him mid-term , unless they think the "long-term" Klopp option will disappear (They are not "normally" prone to knee-jerk actions), but an end of season red card is beckoning should they win nothing this time, and mere Euro CL qualification will not be enough IMHO. I only see the
  14. Yes my mistake, messing up my metrification of centuries! Your belief viz-a-viz the Welsh and also the Cornish is well founded and backed up with DNA trials, but due to the fact that the invaders and migrants couldn't bother their arses going that far West (some may say understandably ), rather than natives fleeing there However it was the Anglo-Saxons that named it Engla Land, and united the various kingdoms so I suppose you could say they were the original English as such. Britons however were there first, but were assimilated. The interesting part from my point of view is that the Roman
  15. The original theory was that the Celts were the true natives of Brython, and had been driven West to Wales and Cornwall by the mass migration/invasion of the various Germanic, Scandinavian and French tribes. However modern theory is that the native population were merely assimilated into, and were ruled over by the invading groups. Alledgedly the DNA of the Celts in Cornwall and Wales is purer though. I believe that the nation of Engla Land was first formed, and named, by the boss of Wessex, and combined all the Anglo-Saxon and Danish kingdoms towards the end of the 1st century.
  16. I've done Qatar's 787 in Biz. I thought it a really good product, close to 1st on a lot of airlines, and is same design as on their A380s. To be honest the "cattle class" seating looked no worse than any other airline, but actual users of the seating would be better judges.
  17. That symbol above the door could possibly be a "shimekazari"; a Japanese neighbour that I used to have in Edinburgh had similar outtside their door. (They did not last too long in the Edinburgh weather!) I was told it was for the "normal" ward off evil spirits, but their home in Japan's version would also be to welcome ancestral spirits. I didn't realise that there were male geishas too!
  18. Biggy this weekend should be Scousehampton v United Going by both teams performances so far I'm betting on a 0-0 draw.
  19. Qatar have drastically improved these days, especially with the new Doha airport.
  20. I was once told by a Japanese shipping superintendent that the big tall hat worn by the bride was "to hide her horns" submissively! I thought that was a bit rude, insinuating she was a cow!
  21. It is worth holding just a little longer. This month and October is a period when a lot of airlines UK prices drop, especially the Middle East carriers; Once they are clear of the "rip off families during the school holiday season". My old route, tended to see a drop of some 33% for advance bookings made in those months, (that was for 1st, but all classes were lower).
  22. Selling Wellbeck was probably LVG's biggest mistake so far. I can fuly understand Arsenal's position. Should they all get or stay fit, they have an exceptional squad of players, and a "suitable" or better replacement for Giroud was just not available. They missed out on Schneiderlin, who was on the wishlist. Wenger, in general, will not buy crap or overpriced mediocrity; Martial would have had to have been priced at about 3 Mill. to interest him. And as for a proven "Premier League" failure to Man. City for 55 Million plus; exasparation abounds, even taking in a good season for Wolfsburg! Th
  23. :Uh-oh ............Here we go again! I sincerely hope they have at least one, and preferably two, substitutes for Pedro lined up right now! Considering Hernandez would only get on the pitch should LVG suffer complete memory loss should Rooney go sick we will be limited to "Fat Sam-esque" no striker lineups, if no signings are made in that department.
  24. The deli/cheese section was good, but not much else IMHO. The cafeteria type stalls were good for the budget conscious farang food eaters.
