  1. If you are a mosquitoe magnet like me it might be worth your while to wera repelant if you are heading to the villages or palces like Cambodia or Vietnam. from Yahoo.com story JAKARTA (Reuters) - Southeast Asian nations are battling a surge in dengue cases, amid signs that climate change could make 2007 the worst year on record for a disease that often gets less attention than some higher-profile health risks. The spread of dengue, which is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and is endemic in much of the region, has also accelerated in recent years due to increasing urbanization and travel or migration within the region, experts say. Efforts to develop a vaccine are proving difficult because dengue can be caused by four viruses. So the only real method to fight the disease at present is to eliminate likely breeding spots for mosquitoes from discarded tyres to plant pots. "The threat of dengue is increasing because of global warming, mosquitoes are becoming more active year by year and their geographical reach is expanding both north and south of the Equator," said Lo Wing-lok, an expert in infectious diseases. "Even Singapore, which is so affluent and modern, can't exercise adequate control," Hong Kong-based Lo added. Dengue cases in Hong Kong usually involve people returning from hotter parts of Asia, but Lo warned that warmer temperatures meant the disease could ultimately become endemic in southern China. Dengue sufferers often describe the onset of high fever, nausea and intense joint pain. There is no real treatment, apart from rest and rehydration, and in severe cases it can be fatal. In Indonesia, where concerns over bird flu more frequently grab headlines, dengue saw a dramatic peak earlier this year after much of the Jakarta area was flooded. "It's not so much the rise in temperature that affects dengue, rather the rising rainfall has lengthened the lifespan of the epidemic each season," said Wiku Adisasmito, a dengue expert at the University of Indonesia. The Asian Development Bank developed a model suggesting that dengue might rise three-fold in Indonesia due to climate change. By last month there had been 68,636 cases and 748 deaths so far this year, according to Health Ministry data. Although cases are slowing at the end of the wet season, experts warn that 2006's record 106,425 cases could easily be overtaken. The record number of deaths was 1,298 in 2005. ANTI-DENGUE CAMPAIGNS The picture looks similar in neighboring countries. Thailand had more than 11,000 cases of dengue fever and 14 deaths by this month, up 18 percent from the same period of 2006. In May, the worst month, 3,649 people were found with dengue. Most patients were between 10-24 years old, Deputy Public Health Minister Morakot Kornkasem said in a statement. The number of dengue cases in Singapore last month was nearly three times that in the same period a year ago, according to the government, which says warmer weather was partly to blame. The surge in cases has prompted the government to step up its anti-dengue campaign, urging Singaporeans to clear roofs and gutters, and throw out stale water in containers. Between May 20 and 26, there were 259 dengue cases according to the Straits Times newspaper, the highest weekly figure this year, but below the weekly record of 714 cases in September 2005. In Malaysia, 48 people died from dengue during the first five months of the year, health officials said, up roughly 71 percent from 2006. By May 26, 20,658 people had caught the disease, a surge of 55 percent over the corresponding 2006 figure. "We are concerned over the increase and we need everyone to cooperate with the authorities to fight the menace," Health Ministry official Hasan Abdul Rahman told the New Straits Times recently. Prevailing weather patterns of hot days punctuated by a day of rain have worsened the problem. "There is no medicine to cure dengue fever, so the only treatment is to have a lot of electrolytes," said Noranita Badrun, a Kuala Lumpur resident whose daughter, Nurin Syakilah, spent a week in hospital in April battling the disease. If not diagnosed early, dengue can kill, but Nurin, who received 18 bottles of intravenous fluids during her hospital stay, recovered soon and is back at school, where two other students also had the disease, Noranita said. Women,

my first wife use to piss about me driving to fast. This after she got a ticket becuase whilst driving at 90 she passed a cop who was doing 80, this in a 50 mph speed zone. After he stopped her she tried to get out of it. But the cop told her Look I can't let you pass me, not when I am driving 30 over the limit. To the car into the shop to check on a transmission leak on the wifes car. Mechanic calls me and asks if I knew there was a large dent and a hole punched into the bottom of the transmisson pan. I told yah sure and had him replace the cover. Never bothered asking the missus how she did that, knew I would never get a straight answer. Another time she hit my truck (parked in the driveway) with her car and ripped my front bumper off. She put the bumper back on and tied it with string. The next time I drove the truck I get about 2 miles from home and the bumper falls off (while I am driving at 45 mph and I drive over it). Took her a long time to fess to that one.
  4. sorry Mr. Mango, your are correct, I completely missed what you were looking for, i thought you were after a cheap one way fare. Local Grocery stores here in the US have visa cards you can buy. They are rechargable. You send the card inside a birthday card to the girl in overnight mail. Once you know she has it you go online and put the needed amount of money on the card and she can charge it no problem. (yes I know you are not suppose to do that. But it works most of the time.)
  5. EVA sell one way tickets and usually the price is close to 1/2 of the price of a round trip. Hawk buys his tickets from a travel agent BKK-LAX on china air. they have and open return for 6 months and the price is around $900. For an extra $50 you get the ticket with a 1 year open return. Travel agents also have similiar tickets on other carriers. All the airlines will sell a one way ticket, the just charge way too much.
  6. I got to 35 sec but I need a smoother moving mouse. This one is a little sticky. Guess I have been using it for looking at too many pictures on this forum.
  7. Grand Mercure is part of the accor hotel chain. The accor hotels particularly soffitels are very hit and miss on being guest friendly. I don't know of a soffitel in BKK that is Guest friendly. If that would be a concern you might want to inquire of the hotel as to their policies.
  8. The wife calls the bangkok police my mia noi. Everytime I drive in bangkok they get me. Worst was 1500 baht for speeding they said it was a double fine becuase of the kings birthday. They started at 1000 baht but after 10 minutes of my wife arguing with them the cop was pounding on the roof and demanding 1500 baht. Another time we got stopped for and everybody in the car was drunk. We had 2 thai guys with us and they invited the cop to party with us. We offered the cop a 1/2 full bottle of JW black but the cop said he had no place to put it and if he drank it he'd be mao like us. He let us go no fine. One of only 2 time that I got away without Ahem "paying a fine" Most of the time it has been 200 or 300 baht but last trip they got me for no drivers license and after 10 minutes of negotiation I finally got them to agree to 500 baht. my take ... never let a TG argue with a cop it just makes it worse.
  9. united and thai biz class are very similiar except for the stews. (thai being much better) thai premium is about the same as ual premium.
  10. If you are picky about where you stay then the walk in will not make you happy. There are several reasons why. Sometimes when I have done a walk in I have been able to get a room but had to move 1 or 2 time during the stay. One time in low season (august) the hotel had a delux room for 8 days but they didn't have the same room. The were willing to give a very good rate. Talking to the desk clerk they have many guests who book months in advance and book specific room numbers. i.e I want room 501. Next to that the hotel clerks themselves show people booked inot specific rooms even when no specific request was made for the reservation. Seems many thai hotels, unlike american hotels, assign people to rooms before they check in. That makes it difficult for them to say yes you can check in for 8 days in the same room even though they have vacany for all 8 days. The other things to remember. Even in low season many of the hotels in pattaya and bangkok can get fully booked in advance for the weekends. I was talking to one hotel owner in BKK who told me that there is always a large groups of expats who come to bkk or pattaya for the weekend from udon, ubon, malaysia, sigapore, china and other parts. So a hotel that has lots of rooms sun-thur can be full for the weekend from 3 day tourist that are loacl from asia. This can screw up your plans if you are trying to book less than 30 days in advance. If you don't care what you pay or don't care where you stay, then you will always be able to find a room.
  11. Very nice hotel/ I stayed there when they first opened. Comparable to majestic grande but not crawling with assholes loke MG.
  12. It will be tough to find a cheap fare from BKK-HKG. Thai air has managed to get a strong position. There ysed to be many airlines flying the route including united and american. Both had to drop the route becuase of a threat to deny them gates at bkk if they kept flying the route. So now the only airlines flying are those that will not compete.
  13. i have stayed at flipper. Rooms are cheap and shabby. I had one BG who said "my room better". A/C is weak and rooms are small a very plain. Staff at flipper was nice and lobby is decent. If you want to be in that area, Try eastiny inn. They have a very nice lobby and the pictures of the rooms looked good. Do a search and see if you can find and reviews of eastiny. If you look up flipper you should see a split decison. Many guys like it becuase you can get rooms there for 700 baht. The rest of us don't becuase we would rather pay 1000-1200 baht a get a bigger room with better bed etc.
  14. gee paul, Obviously we didn't keep Jan busy enough if she still had time for you to get your hands on her. Congrats
  15. Tims residence is in the area as is areca lodge. You should not have any problem finding a room somewhere near. If you look on latestays.com pattaya is wide open during that time frame. Also try a search on this forum for the thai archer hotel in is across from Lolitas. http://www.arecalodge.com/ http://www.timroyalresidence.com/ http://www.lekatai.com/contact.htm thethaiarcher@hotmail.com +66 3872 0948
  16. I bought a ticket on eva last week. I Have been a united premier paltinum for a decade. But i finally got tired of the crappy service especially in the last couple of years. So no more UA flights for me (even though my brother is a UA pilot) I will use my milage to book sing air biz class when available. Until then I'll take the $1004 delux seating on eva like I just paid. I am looking forward to getting some real service from an airline. Sing air was great. Thai air was goofy. United seems to send their flight & gate attendants to the "piss on them" school. Nice part will be leaving bkk at 1 p.m. instead of 6 a.m. like united.
  17. I stayed there back in November 06. paid 1200 baht a night for a very nice room. They were tearing up the pool at that time. BTW previous poster must be confused with something else. Whitehouse was open in November 05 I was staying at sandy springs at that time but they were definately open. They have double windows so rooms are quite. good a/c. The pool ws being ripped up and replaced in nov 06 anyone know if they are finished yet?? also I had wife with me and she had girlfriends coming and going without reception ever saying a word to us. But I do think that they brochure states room rates are for double occupancy and subject to extra charge if more than 2 people in a room.
  18. popular science has picture of the new lockheed in the current issue, Problem is it is a private jet built to hold something like 12-20 passengers. I guess I got my speed wrong I think they say mach 1.6 and the concorde i think was 2+ so not faster than the concorde. Boeing hasn't announced any delays in the 787 that I know of, but it just looks like they might not make their project schedule. Part of the reason is this is the first attempt in aviation history of mass production of composite large scale jets. Just my pondering. But any delay in the 787 will pale in comparison to what delays the 380 appears it will have before production is up to speed. The 380 also presents a very real threat to airbus. In the early 1980's McDonnel Douglass brought out the MD-80. It really was a superlative jet at the time. But they contracted with American Airlines based on the assumption that as they ramped up production the time to complete the plane would be reduced and cost per plane in quantity would also drop. The assumptions were false and the production of the MD-80 drove McDonnel Douglass out of business, only to be acquired by Boeing. The projections I have read about Airbus's production assumptions are almost identical to the business plan I read of MD in the 80's. If Airbus pulls it off they will have created a great plane. But they may also destroy the company. BTW Boeing farms out much of the production of its jets to companies in other countries. The reason is becuase they face the real prospect of not getting business from those countries unless part of their production is based there. Last I knew Boeing had production in austrailia and several other countries.
  19. Remarkably enough, bankruptcy has not seemed to be a deterrent to many airlines when it comes to leasing/buying new aircraft. My point about the delivery of the two aircraft. The 380 does not involve any drastic new technology that I know of. It is just bigger than other planes. That does create some logistical problems, but nothing that knowledgable management can't plan for. The 787 involves using all composite materials on a commercial airliner. Something that no one has ever done before. Being at this point appears that it will deliver their planes somewhat later than projected but close to original timetables. The 380 can't seem to get to the point where it will be produced at anywhere near original projected timetables. Speaking of original technology Lockheed has been showing off their new mach II private jet airliner. Faster than a concorde and NO SONIC BOOM. able to fly over land and sea. Just wish they would make a version that a regular joe can fly in.
  20. I have often thought about writing a management book and calling it "management by mistake". The best and most effective managers understand that to develop talented and effective managers and future leaders means that you have to let them take risks and to sometimes make mistakes. Poor managers demand perfection. The usually result is to disable the talent that work for them. Someone earlier made a comment about the validity of the posters knowledge of the aircraft industry. I served more than 25 years of the commercial airline subcommittee. I have toured the plants of douglass, lockheed and some boeing subcontractors. I have gotten to see the design facilities. It really is amazing. And as for the validity of the posts I haven't seen anything in thise thread by BigDUSA that is off base. And those of you that have seen the postover the years know that BigD and I don;t often agree on things. The original 787 was to be delivered almost 2 years after the 380. Now it look like it might be a race. I had heard that there might be a 3-way deal for United to send 747 to fedex(via boeing) and order 787 on a plane by plane replacement. But so far I have heard many rumors abot united buying 787's and they have not happened. So my sources about United must be getting unrealiable. ( but I still can't help but wonder why the airline that participated directly in the design of the 787 hasn't ordered any) BTW someone pondered if the original 747 was designed using computers or completely by pen and paper. They answer is mainframe computers were used by not nearly anywhere to the extant of today or even 10 years ago.
  21. misssing the pertinent info. assuming you are on the space shuttle and weightless then the ball is always at rest until acted upon by some other object.
  22. it is not unheard of for a virgin to lose her virginity as a BG. I was talking to one girl a fw year back and she said that she knew of 3 or 4 girls who were virgins when they started work at a bar. One was something like 28 and still a virgin when she started bar. from my geting to know lot of regular TG as well as BG I would guess that there is a greater percentage of unmarried 20 yr old virgins in Thailand than in USA or UK. for that matter there are probably a greater percentage of girls in the USA or UK that are molested by relatives than in thailand. people who post shit about tg are just racist ignorant fucks that are too stupid and too fucking lazy to bother and find out the truth.

    Lawyer Needed

Owen, you are in luck. I have an acquaintance that has set up shop in BKK. He is an attorney from San Francsisco. He sued the state of CA and won several million dollars for descriminating against white males. He is super sharp and love thailand. He will be in Bkk soon but already has a shop and partner setuo their. Divorce and immigration is his thing. I will try to see if I can find his thai number and post it. If he can't help the thai twins across form the embassy have everything wired. For thailand and a divorce case it can be alot like chicago. It is not what you know but who you know. The thai twins by the US embassy in BKK are a pair of lawyers from Las Vegas.
