 hi guys, i know withdrawals are free but what rate do they give on a transaction. is it uk bank rate on the day or local rate in pattaya

I withdrew some money from Nationwide on 10th. July from an ATM in Pattaya and was charged at 67.8887. which would have been not far off the rate available at the banks here for cash. I assume that they would apply their own rate and not the rate in Pattaya. Can you imagine Nationwide seeing your transaction and then making a phone call to a bank in Pattaya to see what rate they would apply here? I don't think so. I count myself lucky that I have had a Nationwide account for many years. They have been independent of all the major bank groups, and do not apply ridiculous charges.

if your talking about the nationwide flex account, the exchange rate i used to get from using an ATM was always better than the rate being offered for sterling by any of the exchange boothes/banks in BKK pattaya or anywhere else in thailand.

Nationwide Flex account gives you the commercial exchange rate rather than the standard tourist rate. It's slightly less than the local rate but not by much.

Also happy with using the ATM

Last June/July got this

from 68.170 to the highest rate being 69.228 and no commision charges like some other banks :D

i came back from portugal yesterday and my nationwide visa was giving me an exchange rate

of 1.4823 and the local money shops were offering 1.40 euros to the pound

same applies to thailand with the baht, use the tool above and you will get what it says.

Great rates on both my trips with the Nationwide Flex account. There is also no surcharge for using their credit card on overseas purchases...the only UK card that provides this service, I think.

There are a couple of other CCs that offer the same.

As far as I know, that letter hasn't been sent to me yet - unless my brother forget to mention it when we spoke yesterday.

I only use mine abroad a handful of times - mainly when I go to a neighbouring country.

Just been through my file with them (keep everything like a squirrel) and can't find such a letter. Anybody else recall seeing it?

From the Nationwide's web-site

"Nationwide does not charge for using cash machines in the UK or overseas, but the machine provider may make a charge over which we have no control."

That would refer to those “independent” type ones you get in pubs and garages. Not main bank run ATM’s

I am a totally un neat person about my finances as I have so few,but I am almost sure I read that they were going to start charging some thing on the foreign side of their business ,but as I use TCs I just ignored it .I am prepared to admit my memory is to put it mildly ,Crap, but I am sure there is something in the wind as far as foreign transactions are concerned .This is not written in stone because of my bad memory I was only trying to give a heads up not cause a controversy .sorry.

I'll be back in Scotland for a week towards the end of the month so I'll be able to check any recent mail from the Nationwide then.

Been using my flex account card in Patts for the last 3 years and never been charged or had any hassle from the building society itself. Not sure I would get the same service if they knew what I was spending the money on, thats another matter.

I opened a nationwide flex account yesterday, basically just to use abroad in their atm's.I asked the question and still no charge for withdrawing cash with your debit card.

I use Nationwide Flexaccount and have never been charged for my transactions by card in Thailand.

If you live over here for any length of time I think Nationwide is the obvious way to go if you use your credit card a lot.

When I used to holiday here I used Travellers Cheques plus my Nat West card......Nat West charged 3%.

If you live here permanently and spend,say,10k a year on your card then 3% works out at 300 quid for the Bank.
