yes and Brits from Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea - and the USA still tied?

Too many egos on England and not enough footballs?

I'll bet the USA is glad it sent a single national team, instead of one for each of the 50 states.

Unlike what a certain former imperial power did, to its evident folly...

Drawing with The USA........is a definite......'No win situation'

........let's hope England have learned another lesson from you. The lessons we learned in the War of Independence helped us sweep through Europe and conquer the world!

USA half decent side./

England slightly better than half decent.

shock results can happen, even though we played crap, the amount of chances we missed from centres was unbelievable and another day we would have converted at least 3.The usa goal was from the foot of satan, not the hand of god, somebody was looking down on usa.The big problem Usa have is you will realy struggle to score goals from open play, and i fully expect you to have a 0-0 from one of the two games you play.

Which perfectly demonstrates what the European announcer meant when after the game he said: "England will have to wonder if they are as good as they thought they were, but in what World Cup didn't England think they were as good as they thought they were?". :D

The US result will only be relevant if England fail to qualify for the knock-out stages. If they do, last night's game will soon be forgotten.

It would be nice to see the US get Germany in the next round though. :D

I'm sure you will want to forget the game regardless, embarrasing after all the build up on how good England is supposed to be.

Man of the match has to be the English keeper. Expect to see that kind of mistake from an 8 year old, not a WC keeper.

Certainly a wake up call for England, surely they will advance, but not sure how far they will go, after seeing their opening game.

Me, forget the game? :D I'll be reminding nidnoyham for years to come. :D

As for the English goalkeeper, judging by the number of uploads showing his 'goal', it looks like he could become the WC's first internet superstar. :banghead

I was at the opening game at Wembley in 1966. It was one of the most boring 0-0 games I have ever seen. It was a Vic's classic football match. :D

All this speculation about how bad England played, was banded about then, as it is now. I don't recall us ever having a good first game, in any tournament- World or European Cup.

Heskey, Wright Phillips and Lampard should have all done better last night and I am sure they will in the following games.

O.K. all queue up to take the piss, we are used to it by now- water off a ducks back !

Just think of that game as- 1 goal to England and 1 mistake to the USA. :D

Oh, and for the Sweaties- Taffies and Paddies- You've got to be in it- to win it ! :banghead

Where are all the flags hanging from the pubs, houses, cars, down your way ? :D :allright

" I'm England 'till i die, I'm England 'till i die.......... " :D

I did say slightly better than half decent, and the commentator was the worst i have ever heard too.

Relevant to whom, Khun Tom?

It might be important for the US to move on from the first stage if they stumble later or even win the group (and you mentioned the relevance of a first vs second relative to facing Germany and potentialy moving on to the knockouts).

Either way, one could argue that the result is relevant for promoting soccer in the US and also showing the gap between US and european teams has been reduced.

I watched the game and wouldn't call the result a "shocker", regardless of Green's error.

In almost every country the best athletes at the professional level are soccer players.

That will never happen in America where the best athletes play baseball, basketball, football and even hockey (you can add golf too if you wish).

Soccer is a second tier professional market here, for good or ill. The money is elsewhere and the athletes - the top athletes - play sports that offer them a lucrative future for the most part. TV and marketing pour money into the sports I mentioned. Soccer is just not in the same league, so to speak. Look at all the great players on England, a much less populated nation the USA. The best British athletes are soccer players.

We played as a team and will probably make it to the next round. England may have learned a lesson from this and they almost certainly will move on to the next round also. The USA will not be devestated if we bow out. It will be "Oh, well, we never expected much." For the Brits, the tie was like a loss.

Sorry, Hub. As you say, "My bad". :D

I meant that it will only be relevant to the English fans and media who are currently busy sharpening their knives. :beer

As it is, I totally agree with your assessment - even if I lost 100 quid on backing the US to win - the US results last year in the Confederation Cup should have been a wake up call to many. FWIW, the critical point for the US may come down to how many goals they score against Algeria (assuming they win) as a win for either England or the US against Slovenia isn't a foregone conclusion by any stretch of the imagination. Like the US performance last year, Slovenia's performance in the qualification stages shouldn't be underestimated.

I watched the game and wouldn't call the result a "shocker", regardless of Green's error.

IMHO, Heskey's miss was just as important to the result as Green's blunder (or Green's second-half save for that matter). The difference is that Heskey does it in every game he plays. :D

I'm not at all sure how you reached that conclusion. They may be the most popular or highly paid, but it's stretching things somewhat to call them the best athletes. I know in the US that your football players performed well in the old Superstars competition, but that wasn't repeated with 'soccer' players in Europe. Nowadays, I think that in terms of overall fitness, some of the international rugby players would be hard to beat.

That will never happen in America where the best athletes play baseball, basketball, football and even hockey (you can add golf too if you wish).

It doesn't really happen in the rest of the world either.

As per my reply to Hub, IMHO it would be folly for either the US or England to underestimate Slovenia. Like the US, they don't have many stars but they do have one of the meanest defences in European football.

For the Brits, the tie was like a loss.

You think so? They're still dancing on the streets of Cardiff, Belfast and Glasgow. :D :D :party

Tom, Scots and Irish, etc are not Brits.

The rest was my opinion based on my life long observations of world and national sports. You, as usual, criticize without offering rebuttal.

I consider myself as a Brit, not English... I have Scottish, Irish as well as English DNA in me.

Gee,didn't I post last week that Joe Hart should start ahead of Ronald McDonald (Calamity James) and that other Green fellow..........?

And to think our #2 GK was the star.

Too bad you can't find some UK heritage for Brad Friedel, our #1.
