nasty computer virus out

My main home computer got a virus, somehow it got past my virginmedia anti virus software, then slowed it down, now the computer is so slow it wont run any of the programs,

 

i am running XP on there but unsure what to do?

 

please any ideas ?

How do you know its a virus if your Anti virus doesnt say theres a problem?

 

You tried an online site to check it like Symantec, not all things that drag a pc down are viruses.

 

Anyway... For me I would download Malwarebytes AntiMalware, free from somewhere like downloads. com.

 

Update it and run it a few times.

 

See if that helps.

 

If still and issue download a decent anti virus program like Nod32...just a few quid but cheaper than a new pc.

 

Update it and let it loose on you machine, disable any other antvirus programs you have first or there will be a conflict.

 

 

Next time download your porn from a better site and it wont happen again.

If you have let it go so far that stuff wont open then a restore in safe mode might be a better option before attempting the above.

 

Depends on how bad the machine is and how much you know about pc`s.

 

I would do a restore from command prompt in safe mode if you cannot get the system to respond, then start to find out the cause as that will only buy you some time, not fix the issue.

A lot of sites can be infected, not just porn sites. I got infected at work and we have good software. I only surf for business related reasons at work.

 

As to porn:

 

Porn sites often redirect people. You think you click on a video and you get hijacked. if you want to surf porn, get an iMac

When you say the computer is so slow it run any of the programs, Is it a case that the virus has effected your registry and and wont allow you to open any programs?

 

I recently had a virus that did just that.

 

If that is the case then you can get the programs to execute by

clicking Start

run

type command

then paste the pathway of the program you want to run , eg c:\mydocuments\programfile\malwarebyte.exe or whatever the prgram is your trying to run

 

Malwarebytes got rid of it for me, the Virus i had was VZ.EXE

 

 

go to your Task manger and look at the process and see what is running ,the virus may appear in there then you can google the solution to get rid of it.

 

 

If you havent done so already reboot the computer restart in Safemode and and do all your scans whilst in safemode.

Try avast! anti-virus software. It's free, updates automatically in the background, and I haven't caught a thing since I first installed it two years ago.

Highly recommended.

 

And whatever you do, don't install McAfee or Norton AV systems. They're cures that are worse than the disease. Another one with a bad reputation is AVG which used to be great until a couple years ago. (That's when I switched to avast!).

i can log on because i have a notebook

 

my desktop that does all my printing is the one with problems and still not working

its running XP and the virgin media virus checker did not stop it

i down loaded AVG then kept getting annoying popup saying virus detected but did not stop it

i then bought Norton 360, this said i had bloodhound w32 virus and blocked my operating system so i cant log on at all.

 

as we speak just upgrading to windows 7 borrowed my mates disc

 

this virus came from Elaine my lawyer that sent me a joking attachment, when talking last week she said she had a similar virus ( shit happens )

This is the latest problem I was thinking of at the time I posted. No professionally-made AV (or any other) program should ever cause a major problem like this.

You must be careful trying to use two antivirus programs. Many don't work well together. I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials with no problems since I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro. Since then I have discovered that Avast works well with MSE and I have both installed. Avast found no problems during the first deep scan and I can't see any affect on the speed of my computer. MSE recognizes Avast.

It is a bit short of Ram (500Mb).. so it doesn't take much of a change to slow it down.

Awhile ago I had 1Gb chip put in (actually 992Mb with the balance being used by the video card I believe) and what a difference in speed I have now.

It is an old machine that is looking it's age now..... the TGF uses it sometimes. hardly worth the effort. Thanks for the info though.
