I have found that the Pattaya Daily news will not work with Chrome or Firefox. It does work properly with Internet Explorer.

 

This just happened very early this morning so it should be there. I have copied and pasted the story.

Two unidentified foreign male had a motorbike accident on the Thappraya Road between South Pattaya and Jomtien. One of them died instantly and his friend was in serious injury and had been brought to the Pattaya Memorial hospital.

 

Pattaya, the 28th December 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 4:50am, police Lieutenant Colonel Attaros Krongraj (Dongtan Police Investigator) was notified of a fatal motorbike accident on Thappraya road, toward Jomtien Beach. A team of police along with Sawang Boriboon Rescue personnel were sent to investigate and render assistance.

Arriving at the scene, in front of the entrance of the Royal Hill Resort, 500 metres from the Pattaya Court, officers discovered two foreigners lying motionless on the traffic island. The first man aged around 35. He had suffered a broken neck and severe bruising to his body. He is presumed to have died instantly. The other man, aged about 40, has been suffering with broken arm and leg injuries. Primary care physicians to help the wounded, then quickly brought to the immediate treatment.

 

50 Metres away from the scene, was the orange big bike, Kawasaki, [Ninja type, 400cc No. 247, Chonburi] that the deceased was riding, the front and side of the bike had suffered big damage, lying in the middle of the road.

 

Two helmets and a few personal items were found on the road. A photo of a girl and a mobile phone were found on the deceased person. They all have been kept in order to help find the identity of the men.

Police interviews with an eyewitness, He stated that the Kawasaki had been travelling along at speed heading to Jomtiem. The deceased was the one driving, with his friend sitting behind. Both wore their helmets. When they reached the curve with no lights of the under-construction road, the driver who could not control his bike, reportedly slammed it into the cement pavement edge in the middle of the road. It caused both of them to be ejected over the road and the kawasaki then rolled several times before coming to a stop nearly 50 meters up the road.

Subsequently, the Police and his team of officers took there fingerprints in an effort to identify them before sending the man’s body to a forensic institution for autopsy. Their embassy would be informed.

 

Updated information:

the injured person has been found to be an American, named James Edward, [49], from Virginia [According to his Driver’s License.

 

EDIT - The survivors name is James Edward Crocker Jr.

I'm not saying it was the case in this instance, there is no evidence, that we are aware of, to support it, but if someone is stupid enough to use a motor vehicle while intoxicated, what happens to them, is self inflicted but when someone else is injured or killed as a result, that is a totally different matter.

I know the road they were riding on. Very empty road that time of night. Very straight too. Since it was only them involved in the accident, I'm gonna guess the driver was drunk. That's a pretty shitty way to go out. RIP

baht bus for 40thb and they would be nursing hangovers now instead of one in a body bag for the flight home and the other with serious injuries

agreed, it seems high powered motorbikes are more of a status symbel rather than a form of transport from A to B..its also unlikely that the injured passenger will be covered by any travel insurence, most of them have exemptions regarding motorbikes..a small bike will do the same job as a 750 yamaha , but it might take you 5 minutes longer to get there!!!

More powerful bikes are more dangerous. Before anybody disputes that statement, I'll explain. I had a Honda Wave and never had any serious close calls. I moved up to Kawasaki Boss. It wasn't a fast bike compared to more powerful crotch rockets but it would easily beat the scooters and Honda Phantoms. The Boss is 175 cc and newer Phantoms are 200 cc. It used to tickle me to be able to beat my friend's Phantoms. It was also fun to fly around the scooter bikes just because I could do it. After a couple of VERY close calls, I decided that small bikes are safer because I tended to get stupid and careless on a bigger bike. I sold the Kawasaki. I lived in Jomtien and ALWAYS took the baht buses when I wanted to go to Pattaya. I still believe that anyone who rides in Pattaya while drinking has a death wish. Even when not drinking riding in Pattaya is dangerous.

I would also add that the moto taxis are a surprisingly safe way to get around. Have been using them for many years and never a problem. A lot safer than a farang trying to ride a motorcycle himself in this town IMNSHO.

There's some kind of setting involved that I've been unable to suss out. I simply can't do it with Chrome - but Firefox is okay and IE is perfect. I suspect it's the ad-blocker, but that's just my first and strongest guess.

I tried getting around Pattaya on a pushbike years ago. Gave it up after a few weeks. The soi dogs chase you, the roads are too uneven, you're the lowest man on the totem pole with everyone running you off the road, and you show up at the gogo bar all sweaty.

 

The girls aren't impressed either. The FLB girls told me, "LDK, we want BMW, not BMX."

I wonder if this Crocker guy was the one operating the motorcycle? If you look at the photo of his license, he has a normal Class C drivers license. No endorsements to operate anything more than a personal car. So if it was him, he was operating the cycle without benefit of proper training, along with probably being intoxicated. Not good at all.
