Nicely put.

I can't imagine his wife being soaked during July 4 or Thanksgiving holidays and/or prevented from reaching their destination in a presentable fashon.

One person I never jump up to defend is MM, he does a great job all on his own. However I want to pass along my two cents worth. Your wife was flying a Thai flag, and her wording sounded like a Thai, in Thailand. Yet, she was in the US. Just recently there was an authority on Pattaya flying a Thai flag that was shown to be in Australia. I'm sure it looked the same to him.

Songkran can and is fun. MM's complaint, and mine are two fold. One, it last to long in Pattaya. Two, buckets of water and water cannons to the face of people driving motorbikes is dangerous, and stupid. While most Thai's have been on a motorbike since they were just weeks old, most farang have limited experience. I know expats that never rode a motorbike before coming to Pattaya. A blast of water to the face of a 67 year old man with limited motorbike experience should be criminal in my mind. It should certainly be common sense for a Thai. Even a drunk 1/2 retarded Thai.

Just last night the GF and myself were watching a video on TV of last years songkoran. She didn't notice it until I said something. Most farang that saw the camera man while having a water cannon in their hand, turned away and squirted someone else. There were a couple that wet down the camera man's legs. However, maybe 50% of the Thai's that noticed the camera, squirted the camera, or threw a bucket of water at the camera. One, a police officer. That camera probably cost more than most of those Thai's made in a month or two. Yet they tried to cause damage to an expensive piece of equipment, that wasn't theirs. Then laughed about it.

Last year on this forum someone posted about having a Thai girl run up with a bucket of water as he was videoing, and he stopped and said OK, but please don't get my camera wet, and held it up so she could soak him. She dumped the bucket of water on his camera and laughed.

Your wife thinks we should leave the country because we don't like those extremes. You seem to be backing her up. I would never tell her to leave the country because she doesn't like the way Americans celibate the 4th of July, or thanksgiving. She isn't required to join in on those celebrations. However, I have no choice during Songkoran.

I'm already having to go through the expense of leaving the city to stay in a hotel that has tripled it's rate because other expats try to escape Pattaya as well. Not to mention having to pay to kennel my dog, and pay to get there and back. My friend who will go with me will be paying for two hotels, one in Pattaya, and the other we will stay in.

Songkoran in Pattaya is to extreme for me. I don't like it, I don't have to like it, and I'm not leaving the country. :thumbup

Extra early start this year. I spoke to two thai girls tonight who were doused on soi 8 tonight (the 11th). It has started and it's another 9 or 10 days of this shit.

Yes, it's such a wonderful Thai holiday and if we don't like it we should leave...right!

Was it farang or Thai that doused them?

I don't think they are letting the farangs decide when the holiday starts and what it is supposed to be.

Who said that anyone was letting the farangs decide anything about the holiday? You must have magic glasses and can see something in the posts that I can not? :ang2

I think the Agogos must lose a lot of business during Songkran. Who wants to sit in cold aircon when they're soaked to the skin!
Some won't let you in if you are dripping wet!

Same for the cinema. I like to see a film every week but i couldn't sit there soaking wet. I bet they must be empty for 9 days.

I went out with my 9 year old daughter the first day here in Chonburi. Sorry, I was not able to get any pics. Yesterday, the gridlock was so bad in Bangsaen and Ang Sila, that the police were not letting vehicles to continue past the Big C on Sukky road here in Chonburi. I am glad it is over here, and feel sorry for you guys that have a few more days to put up with in Pattaya.

L/D100, I like your post but I had to laugh at this typo because it is so accurate for most of the U.S. "Your wife thinks we should leave the country because we don't like those extremes. She isn't required to join in on those celebrations. However, I have no choice during Songkoran."

The U.S. ladies "celibate" a lot. However, In Canada and Mexico etc. the Americans don't usually celebrate thanksgiving or 4th of July. Just the U.S.A.

Give it up. You're not going to change the world or even one of the posters here, and it's getting very old. It also sounds exceptionally stupid that you buck the world on who are Americans, but then preach that there are only three countries that have Americans in them.

You don't even know that Thanksgiving is a very big Canadian holiday.

Give it up.

But you do have a choice during Songkran...... you can choose to be, or not to be in Thailand/Pattaya..... :o

Songkran is a Thai festival, and Thais celebrate it how they want to..... :clueless

Strangely enough,we do celebrate both of them but on a much smaller scale than in the US.And in the US,we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, whereas in Mexico,it's not a huge holiday.Go figure. We did celebrate the birthday of Benito Juarez last month with the banks and other facilities closed. The beaches were packed.
