Sit-down street Food in Pattaya - where and what are your favourites?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

(Flo's cooking up some clams for lunch and got my appetite going....... been thinking of starting this topic for a few days... so now's a good time)

Couple of trips coming up this year (first in over 2 years) and I/we are looking for great places to sit down for some street food and watch the world go by. You know the sort of thing - a noodle soup, a stir fry, etc... All good for you and cheap as chips (if not cheaper). Often I/we've walked past places and not known what the stuff on offer was, how much etc. and been too "shy" to ask (not like me/us you might say).

I particularly like the Pad Thai stand at the 2nd road end of soi 7 (hope it's still there).... it was 50 baht a few years ago....

So (much as for how the BF system works in the Newbie section) I thought I'd ask the board members for their favourites - precise locations, what's on offer, how much, why you like it, and importantly when open (often missed the Pad Thai lady at soi Diana/LK Metro as we were too early/late. Pictures would get the tastebuds going of course!

Thanks for your generous input, in advance

Looks good - open all day? Do they have a written menu Martin or do you just point? (Pretty sure you order in Thai, I've forgotten all mine.... need to revise). I can't zoom in on the white boards....... :hairout Those open freezers look like the "Hole in the Wall" on Buakhao - must cost a fortune in electricity (sorry threadf****** my own thread... :angry2 )

not exactly outside..... got that timorno, it's not your favourite then...I like the HiTW myself, though not as good/clean as the Thai snack place next to the Ibis on Dachauerstrasse in Munich.

The menu is in Thai...you'd best know what you want before ordering, because they make it from scratch, so there is nothing to point to.

I am addicted to something called "naam dtohk moo", a dish made with pork slices, garlic, mint, onions, hot peppers, and a couple of other herbs. I can hardly go more than a few days without a dish of it. Eaten with sticky rice.

Here's a typical picture:

wonder when the rancid hole in the wall will make its first appearance in the thread! :puke

Ate there maybe 6 times in April.

5 great meals and one average one. (not always the same cook)

Was always full with both Fallang and Thai customers.

Love it too........It means 'Waterfall of pork'........I ask for it 'mai 'ow man'......Without fat! Love it!!

Looks good too.

My other fav' "gang key lek' means what it looks like........ a plate of "Curry shit metal" A less enticing ring to it I agree ..Ask for it 'Sai Nang kwai' (buffalo skin). They won't have it (thankfully) but a falang asking for it always makes them laugh.

We found a little place we would like to go to again in September alot has changed since you where there. Made in Thailand markets have a refurbish and there is a row of bars called Made in Thai bars next it and we walk through here to go from Soi Boikow to 2nd road, you pop out near Central Festival, you are going to love the food court in the basement there. Any way if you are coming from 2nd road through the Made In Thailand Bars at the end of the bars right in the middle is this bar, what the people running it are trying to call a sports bar well there is a TV that has sports on it and a crammed in pool table. But we had some of our best meals here last trip.

One night in Soi LK metro where we hang out at the 3 Some bar, I got a little pikish and got a bowl of soup of this lady for 30 baht.

It was so good the bastard beside me ate most of it, so I had to get 30 baht Pork and Rice of another cart.

I like Indian curry its not cheap by Thai standards but we ate twice at a place on 2nd road near Tim bar.

On Second road just past Soi1 outside the family mart around 6.00pm about a dozen carts set up shop , tables and chairs.

I order a Khai man gai for about 40 baht and then a banana pancake for 30 baht , and to be a real cheap charlie i buy a strawberry milk from the family mart for about 18 baht.

I also like the the cup of Corn and sugar from food cart , a real good late at night sweet fix

I hope they weren't too precise with the measurements on those drinks - did you try the hot coke and was it more expensive? I take it you mean the "hansum" bastard beside you and it was badboy.....

It's surely about value for money and a good hearty meal, n'est-ce pas?

Will try the above, thanks.

One of my favorites is the street restaurant diagonally across from Beach Club on Soi 15. However, on several recent occasions, I haven't noticed it in operation. Whether that is due to a lengthy Songkran holiday or other reasons, I don't know. But if it is still there, it's worth a try.

It offers very fresh seafood and other dishes at reasonable prices, although they aren't the cheapest around. The Thai man who does the cooking really knows his stuff. The portions are substantial. It's a favorite spot for the better-off girls who work in the WS bars.

Others favorites are the late-night street restaurants on Pattaya Tai close to Tukcom. Very cheap and tasty food, made to order. It's the real thing and I've eaten there many a night with the ladies of FLB. And the ladies outnumber the males at those restaurants by 10 to one and it's easy to make contact with the girls if you're still looking at that hour (after 3.00 a.m.).

I have often wondered as I wobbled down soi 15, why anyone would want to eat there with all the foot traffic, noise and occasional motorcycle going past your elbows. I have too noticed his good selection of seafood and the fact that there are often customers. I am not partial to eating like that, seems like everyone is eyeing your dinner and the polluted atmosphere is adding to it. I liked the ones just down soi BJ where it opens out, mostly I used the one on the left as you head towards 2nd/Pratamnak. Lately I eat more at home and when I do venture into town have a farang food hankering.

I miss the variety and MM keeps posting these appealing pictures.

Morning here in France and just checked in to add to my list of food destinations.

Many thanks jacko and mark for your suggestions. I really do like to go where someone has said "it's good".

Big thanks to Evil for those magnificent pics and insight - on soi 15 the seafood stand always worried me due to paying by weight, it's a well known 'problem' here in France (not a scam just buyer beware). I take it he tells you how much before cooking it - will give it a try. Glad to know he does a good job of the cooking too.

Must also try staying up until 3 along the night market on Tai (normally tucked up cozy by then.....). We've always been there too early and nobody is sitting down so you can't tell what's on offer. If I ask the chef I feel I have to try it whatever it is. At 3 I suppose you can ask one of the girls "what's that you're eating, it looks good, how much is it (the food)" - and as you say "make contact".

Thanks all round once again - any more for any more?

Andy Cap

P.S. One of our French cheffy friends has just added "Fish & Chips" to his menu (unheard of in the whole of France as far as I can tell) so might give that a go this lunchtime.

:grin-jump Not my morning glory, but she's certainly welcome to nibble on it. In my case, maybe the alternate name of "water spinach" would be more appropriate.

For those who favor very inexpensive street-style dishes, here are three more options, all close to Tukcom. They aren't strictly "streateries," but sought of like a hybrid of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant and a street restaurant.

The first is behind Tukcom, at the corner of the first intersection of the bounding subsois as you exit to the left. Great noodle soup, cooked to order and very tasty at 30 or 40 baht a bowl, depending on what's in it.

The second is on Pattaya Tai, diagonally across the street from Tukcom. It serves a great boiled chicken and rice dish (for sit-down or take-away) at 40 baht.

The third is on one of the subsois that runs off Pattaya Tai (third down from Tukcom as you walk towards 2nd Road) . It's about in the middle of the block. Very cheap and tasty food and a great variety of dishes. I failed to take a picture of it, but my favorite dish was squid with salted eggs. It's where one of the girls I know would take her mother for a meal when the mother came to visit. The two dishes in the pic - pork with garlic and Thai-style stuffed omelet, cost a whopping 80 baht total.

I can't imagine what the health authorities in any Western restaurant would say about this restaurant, but I was eating there on almost a daily basis for several weeks and never had a hint of a stomach problem.

I ordered Morning Glory at the Flying Vegetable restaurant....the waiter came over to me and said 'duck'...I said 'no, chicken', that's when it hit me!

Excellent excellent stuff Evil - just what I'm looking for. That noodle soup is just right for a hangover I find..... it's all going on the list. Thanks a lot.

The only 2 times I have ever been sick from food/water in Thailand was at The Waterfront marina in Phuket (iced water was "off") and in Pattaya at a certain eatery named after the capital of Louisiana, never from a street stall or hole in the wall......(no, that's NOT a cue to highjack the thread with stories of dysentery/eye of a needle etc.!!!!)

Any more ideas welcome of course...... 2 x 3 weeks to fill after all!

Bon appetit

Andy

P.S. Yesterday I had double fish and chips - good cod....(one cod portion wasn't enough so told my froggy cheffy friend to add "double fish and chips" on his blackboard. Two minutes two French blokes came in and ordered it :thumbup ) Problem was Flo and I drank a litre and a half of white wine. It wasn't pretty this morning :scared:

Ah yes, big oops there. Didn't think that through at all, but parry worked it out right... US state capitals are never where you think they are, that's the golden rule isn't it?

Sorry :hairout
