With all the Brits in Pattaya, either as guesthouse proprietors, bar or restaurant owners,or visitors, there must/should be a supply and demand equation for that quintessential English breakfast treat of smoked herring! With all the claims of the best full English being made here there and everywhere,is there anywhere offering kippers as a morning treat? They must be importable, even if frozen.

I have seen them along time ago in the Pig and Whistle, but that was a very long time ago, failling that - the best place to try would be KPK foods in the small estate area behind Big C on central rd

You know I haven't seen them around. Now and again I see smoked Haddock, obviously pickled herrings in a jar too.

Perhaps the usual places have decided it is easier to fry bacon and eggs and there is less of a smell than a kipper breakfast. That said, I will be on the Isle of Man soon and enjoying that speciality!

Out of interest, would importing them, either the bagged version from Sainsburys,or the dried out ones that come through the post,be ok for Thailand? I'm sure the dried out postal version keeps for a good while, but would customs snaffle them?

Whilst never actually having kippers in Pattaya, I’ve had one or two things that smelt very reminiscent of kippers.

The Continental serves them as a breakfast dish (Door2Door too). 185 baht for 2.

I will be on the IOM next week and kippers are for sure on the breakfast menu.

With thickly buttered brown bread!

I’m sure my mate got the bagged version in Udon a while ago. He’s away at the moment but will ask him when he’s back. Don’t know if it was from a normal shop or a farang specialist he mentioned it to me because his TG loved them and wanted more.

Finally remembered to ask my mate. He bought them in an ex-pat shop in Udon who’s owner got them from his supplier in Pattaya. Not cheap, obviously as imported, after his GF expressed a yen for them he brings them over himself now. So I suppose if you can buy them in Udon from a man who gets them in Pattaya they must be available to the locals!

When I was on the ships out of Uk we had two names for them...."Stornoway steaks" and one eyed bastards, the best ones I had were smoked using old whisky barrel shavings that drifted up to the top of the kiln, Its a wonder the curers were'nt pissed by the time the smoking was completed.

Hope I can stumble on a "Jack the Ripper" on the breakfast menu In Patts when I get there

I had a few while on the Isle of Man in October.

Freshly smoked and bought from the Peel factory.

Darned enjoyable breakfast after a night out.
