Sue's Place, Soi 13/4 (Pattayaland 2)

Sue's Place is a small Mexican restaurant on Soi 13/4 (Pattayaland 2) off Beach Road, about half way up the block on the left side as you walk towards 2nd Road. The food was very good and I took the unusual step (for me) of eating there on two consecutive days.

 

I don't know if it's the weather or low season, but on both days (Wednesday, 6.30-8.30 pm and Thursday, 5.30-6.30 pm) I was the only farang customer. There were some Thai women eating and drinking at the same time, but they appeared to be either employees or friends of the boss.

 

It's unfortunate, because Sue's Place deserves more custom. Perhaps the location is a factor. Pattayaland 2 was pretty dead, with very little foot traffic past the restaurant while I was sitting there.

 

 

 

The menu features an assortment standard Mexican dishes plus some combination platters and Thai dishes. I'm sure Gordon Ramsey would approve, as he often urged small restaurants to do a few dishes well rather than attempt a lot of mediocre dishes. I can't be bothered to look it up right now, but If I recall correctly, Sue's Place took over the menu and perhaps the cook from its defunct neighbor, the former Blue Parrot.

 

I started my meal Wednesday with a margarita. It was fresh-tasting with a good shot of tequila.

 

 

I followed with a combo platter of a beef taco and a beef chimichanga, basically a deep-fried burrito. It came with rice and refried beans as the sides and two small dishes, one with salsa and the other with hot sauce. It tasted fine, equal to what you'd get in a decent Mexican restaurant in the U.S. It cost 235 baht and a bottle of San Miguel Light was 80 baht.

 

 

 

Thursday night I went for the grilled steak fajitas, which were served with onions and green peppers fried together. It also comes with two flour tortillas and small dishes of salsa, sour cream and hot sauce. It was brought to the table sizzling on a metal platter on a wooden tray. You spoon the meat, veggies and condiments onto the tortillas and roll them up yourself.

 

Again, a very tasty dish with the fajitas seasoned properly. It cost 265 baht.

 

 

 

The women at the adjacent table kept toasting me and eventually asked me to join them. I did so and we had a lot of laughs. I gave one of the women a teddy bear, which made her happy indeed.

 

 

 

I also gave a little girl in restaurant a bear and she played with it a long time, although she wasn't eager to have her picture taken. Her mother tried to get her to smile, but she wasn't having any of it. I think my camera and flash frightened her a bit.

 

 

One of the walls featured an interesting collection of stickers, of which one stuck out. I must be a real antique, I haven't seen one like for many years.

 

 

 

On my first night, I noticed a cat sitting on the first-story roof across the street (marked by the yellow arrow in the pic). I wondered what the cat was doing on the roof. I thought it might be delivering gifts but had its dates mixed up. After all, a cat that lives on the beach has to be sandy claws.

 

 

 

The next afternoon, there was whole tribe of cats on that roof. I wonder how many of them get fired by the electrical wires.

I lived in a third story apartment in Bangkok. There was one rooftop tom cat who owned the area where I lived. After a couple months of my leaving food on the balcony for him, he finally befriended me and even allowed me to pet him. One day we had a challenging cat come around. They got into a bloody fight and both fell three stories to the ground. The next day my cat was back and seemed none the worse for wear. He had a few bloody spots but they didn't seem to bother him. He was a ball of pure muscle. They are tough creatures for sure.

I've eaten at the Blue Parrot a few times and it went from pretty good to pretty disappointing. Any word on whether the old owner or cook is involved in the new venture?

Maybe someone who knows the former owner of the Blue Parrot will be able to give a definitive answer. According to what I've read elsewhere, the former Blue Parrot owner isn't involved, but the same cook is/was involved to some degree. The menu is supposed to be almost identical, at least in terms of the Mexican dishes.

I thought of it only last night as I passed by on Beach Rd........

It was always a good stopping point on the way back from WS to find a good companion and have a last drink. It was like the Wonderful Bar without live music.

My last visit was also some time back and I got annoyed as the girl was cheating at that roll-dice flip numbers-over game in order to get me to bar-fine her as a side bet. Thanks for the education..... a Mexican restaurant eh?

I have been looking for a place like this to eat at in Pattaya. I will certainly look this place over.

 

As a side issue I often like a good English breakfast at dinner time and I think that in the same soi there is a place called Palmers. It gave me on a few occasions one of the best value brekkies in Pattaya

The Blue Parrot used to have a waitress that worked at night as a dancer at some of the Walking Street bars. I forget her name, but she was nice. Last time I was in Pattaya, though, I didn't see her there.

Sue's Place has been there for a very long time. I went there often before I became domesticated (mostly). Sue looked after me and made some great recommendations for someone to share the night with me. You might say I had a take-away that, while edible, was not fattening. This was over 12 years ago. And the memories linger on......

Following the review I was looking forward to a visit to this place. I did not get there till after midnight last night and the old lady says "Normally we close but I keep kitchen open for you". I settled for a plate of quesadilla (?) and it was excellent and just what I needed. I will be back at a more godly hour to try the burritos and what have you. Thanks for the hint. I also mentioned somewhere that I had found a good breakfast place in the area called Palmers so imagine my surprise to find it next door to Sues!

Glad to see Mexican food has returned to SP2. I was sad when the Blue Parrot closed, I guess it is back as Sue's Place in one form or another. Will drop in.

Here is a photo the beef enchilada and taco combination. I think it is #11 on the menu. The taco is a hard taco which I like. In California, the default taco is usually a soft taco.

The rice was dry, the refried beans were not that tasty. The enchilada and taco were just okay, but I doubt I will eat here again before trying other Mexican.

I went to Sue's with Beerbelly and had the 2 chicken enchiladas including sour cream. I agree on the rice and beans...I didn't really like them that much. The chicken was more dry than I liked.

I did like that they included 2 salsas without my requesting it.

When the bill came, they had added on sour cream at 40b. I pointed out that the menu said the dish came with sour cream, and they removed the charge. They probably charged me because I had specifically asked if the dish came with sour cream...so they took that as me ordering sour cream.

 

All in all, I prefer Mike's Mexican better...still haven't been to Tequila Reef...they are next.

 

Here's the meal...yes, there were 2 chicken enchiladas under that covering of cheese and stuff. To me, it wasn't a very appetizing presentation.

That's distressing. Seems like the food has gone down since I ate there. The rice and refried beans don't look the same as in my pic. I wonder if it was the same cook as the nights I was there? Consistency has always been the hobgoblin of small of restaurants in Pattaya.

Tequila Reef can be good, depending on the cook. One time I went there and had a great burrito. Went back a week later and it wasn't so good. I guess anyplace can be hit or miss.

As Evil pointed out, it might have been the difference in cooks.

 

Perhaps avoid Thursdays and go on whatever day Evil P went.

That is exactly what it looks like!…and reminds me of an abomination that was served up to me when it was still under the "Blue Parrot" guise. However, somebody once posted a photo of "Biscuits & Gravy" on here, which was equally as stomach churning !

Unfortunately I have found the "Tex-Mex" fare in Pattaya from the "established" restaurants to be of a pretty poor standard (my opinion of course) and much better examples produced as "one off" type dos at bar parties etc.
