I just looked at this.

There seems to be an inordinate number of Member name 'Guest' there, showing the same IP address, which resolves to France but hostname ends with cz. They are all in the location Viewing Members Calendar.....(or they were and later seemed to have moved to other places in the forum.

Just seems odd.... probably a frostfire question?

The "guests" all seem to be the "Open to Everyone" forum and could be a Web crawler or bots downloading pages for later processing by a search engine.

Yes, that is what I thought, I took another look and they seem to be moving around sniffing! When I first looked they were all in the same spot and it looked like a mass attack. Don't recall noticing this on the old server. There is a different one in there now in the Calendar.

My guess is crawlers as well. Looks innocent enough for now... but if traffic gets too heavy I can research it further. Checking the first couple IPs show them as unknowns. Could still be a SEO crawler of some type.

The number of crawler IPs vs the number of active users has always been much higher. I don't see anything new about the stats now.

 

The crawlers are generally well-behaved in that they do their crawls in a leisurely fashion.

Not a waste of time at all. It's good to be aware of what's happening with Web crawlers. What I found fascinating about the Online Users List is that a BM with zero posts was using the board messaging system. I've also noticed that several long-term but inactive members are frequent users of the messaging system.

I think, for Google and others to find things in this site they first have to read/copy all of everything and catalogue it for searches. There are a lot of these 'bots' reading/copying the site so the search engines can find stuff on this site. More search bots because being a 'new site' (moved to different server) everything has to be reread/recopied by the search engines. sort of like that

Ok and thanks. It is one thing to find out what a bot or crawler but another to find out (succinctly) what they do, who controls them and what their purpose is.

You should be able to see a green box and a red box on OTHER peoples post's (not your own), and your able to vote as you like to that post!

If so, select "IP.Board - DO NOT EDIT OR DELETE"

The rep system with green and red votes has done a lot to keep things civilized on Pattaya Talk. A net negative reputation indicates broad disapproval of some aspect of a BM's posts, usually having to do with name-calling and personal insults. A few BMs have attempted to misuse the rep system voting, but they have been quickly exposed.

 

In all, the rep system is very fair and a useful tool. It's a gentle reminder that BMs who indulge in personal attacks and mindlessly provocative posts with get voted down.
