Do the Samoans do their own Haka?

    The Haka

The All Blacks played the U.S. Eagles in Chicago last Saturday in Chicago. The score was 74-6. It wasn't that close. On the other hand, the attendance was 61,000 and it was live on broadcast television (NBC). The observation as to the reaction of the NBA players was interesting. Any American who wasn't a rugby fan (and some who are) would look at the Haka and say it is choreographed, whole team trash talking. At the pro level in North America, trash talking is tolerated, highly inventive and thoroughly obscene. However, if it was choreographed, staged by an entire team at the beginning of a game and in English, it would probably result in a game cancelling brawl. I have my own thoughts about what the tone, volume and gestures of the Haka seem to suggest as the correct translation. I may share my theory later. For now, I will just say that I would not repeat it in a pub in Wellington.
  3. In partial defense of Jacko, at least it does snow in Serbia.
  4. When we got to our hotel in Sukhotai, the GFE provider immediately took the key off the fob so the power would stay on while we were out.
  5. D, just go ahead and tell the docs you're going to Pattaya! You know you want to. She Who Must Be Obeyed may be a different matter.
  6. Took Gare, is that the "fuck you" lizard or is that another beastie.
  7. Go visit the grandkids D.
  8. My first time in Thailand, 74-75, if you used locally produced toilet paper, you worried about splinters.
  9. Fair point but if I was asked to explain further, I would say that was the north end.
  10. I know I shouldn't quibble with the only other guy on the board who knows how to pronounce Gratiot, but which end?
  11. That conjures a really weird visual.
  12. 4niceight, thanks for the detailed account. I had cataract surgery on the left eye in 2000, same procedure but a single vision lens at that time. I seem to remember a injection very close to the eyeball but not in it to deaden the muscles controlling movement of the eye. General impression was that the left eye was bore sighted dead ahead and I could not have moved that eye if I had had to do so. This was one of the most successful medical procedures I have ever had and it was absolutely necessary given the vision in that eye. That being said I don't think I would choose to have a needle stuck in that area and have my eyeball cut on unless it was essential.
  13. Call me a cynic, but I suspect it is free withdrawals for CIMB card holders across the four countries.
  14. Probably not a big display on the Indian Mutiny either.
  15. Ass end of a V-2? Also in photo 7 of the same post, I think.
  16. Thanks. Do you by any chance know what this beast was?http://i778.photobucket.com/albums/yy67/Firth1974/RAF%20Hendon%20Sept%202014/DSCN7836_zps29205483.jpg--first photo in post 3
  17. Had just about given up hope on you guy. Glad to see you are still top side.
  18. The GFE provider decides we should go visit the Nong Nooch gardens so, of course, we go. Rolling up to the vehicle gate, she says 300 baht for admission, which I duly produce. The attendant sees me and says 500 baht for him. I hear the word passport, possibly foreign passport holder. My friend responds with something said with great assurance and we get in for 300 baht total.

    NFL Shame

I'm not giving him a pass for the incident in Texas for which he was indicted, but he could survive it professionally. This other report, if it is accurate, is the one which could end his football career.
  20. The general aviation people joke about the $100 cheeseburger.
  21. Bring the misses. You guys would fit right in.
  22. I went looking in Siam Paragon in Bangkok yesterday. Found a few Tevas towards the back of the second level, but the platforms/soles were rather soft and flexible which is not what I need. Also, the price was almost 3,200 baht so I'll nurse the current pair through another month until the end of this trip.
  23. I still see a few folks who I would guess are from the rodina. The batallions who book rooms in Naklua so they can get the full benefit of riding baht buses to and from Jomtien seem to be missing in action.
