Bangkok airport express train to open next week

BANGKOK, THAILAND (AFP) - An elevated train line linking Bangkok's city centre and its main airport will be fully open for service next week after months of delays, the Thai state railway said Wednesday.

The non-stop "airport link", which covers 28 kilometres and cost 25.9 billion baht ($1.1 billion), will officially open on Monday. Trains are due to run daily every 40 minutes, between 6am and midnight.

After months of test runs, the express service will offer passengers a 15-minute journey to Suvarnabhumi airport from Bangkok's centre for 100 baht, a spokeswoman for the State Railway of Thailand said.

Passengers returning the same day will not need to purchase another ticket.

A second city line will offer a 30-minute journey at a cheaper rate, stopping at eight stations along the way.

Looking a this map transfer on Phaya Thai Station Sukhumvit Line to Nana. BTW love the way the Nana station is announced: "Next station is Nanaaa..." :clueless

PS: Trotting along on the BTR (inc.transfers and escalators) with 1-2 bags can be a slight problem (well, maybe not for the young guns..)

It's great to finally have the option. Actually using it will depend on when I arrive, and what I'm carrying. Apparently they are only running every 40 minutes, so it's ok if you catch it right, it's rush hour and you're travelling light. I think I'll still be in a taxi if I'm in late and/or have heavy bags.

Might just be tempted to have a couple of nights in Bangers instead of heading straight to Patts.

Let's hope Soi Cowboy isn't too expensive.

Just because there is now a train available?

Taxis didn't take too long before.

As to the last sentence......yes, good one!

When do they plan to extend it all the way to Pattaya? Then it can join the wonderful monorail planned for here.

Unless you stay right outside the stairwell to the ST, you are going to have to get to ST with all your luggage in the heat, humidity and maybe rain.

Taxis are not that expensive and just as fast if not faster.

clueless where do most folk go???????? clueless

Take a wild guess where most people go after deplaning at the BANGKOK International Airport located just outside BANGKOK, with hundreds of BANGKOK-registered taxis and (in the last few months) regular trains from the BANGKOK Skytrain system. Come on, take a stab at it. You already have one clue that it's not Pattaya.

I could sometimes get away with just a backpack when travelling these days, as I have a 'place' at both ends. I just always seem to be bringing back crap from the UK, which I cannot find in LOS, or is rather more expensive here. I am with you, I get a taxi, or book one of the Mr Ts! Edited by jacko

Last time I took a taxi from the airport to Suk soi 8 it took nearly 3 friggin hours due to traffic---as long as the flight from Manila to BKK...and was a mid-week early afternoon arrival. Will be thrilled to take the BTS to Suk in the future. Once I arrived at the hotel desk clerk says--"oh yes, happen all time in BKK". BTS all the way for me!

This is a totally new line with a different rail system and carriages.

Unlike the existing BTS system it is powered by an overhead feeder whereas the existing system is feed by a third rail current at ground level, like what happens in the UK and many other US & European electric subway systems.

Therefore, it cannot be connected up with all the other BTS routes.

A real alternative to the spiv Bangkok cabbies! Most of whom are shit-for-brains.

A small correction - by 'ground level' I mean track level of course, as the track is certainly not at ground level, being about 35 or so metres above ground.

If you're staying near Asoke (Cowboy) then you're best changing trains at Petchaburi & taking the MRT (subway). I can't tell you it's a hike though, because I saw where the platform was being built when using the Petchaburi access to the MRT.

I also think that Ploenchit BTS station is closer to Nana hotel than the Nana station.

Actually I'm sure it is, as Ploenchit is Soi 0 & Nana station in line wtih Soi 7/1 & Nana hotel is on Soi 4.

If you're travelling with a decent amount of baggage a cab just makes sense.

with a very bad knee and other assorted old sports related injuries I try to minimize how far I have to hump it. I do have a backpack like suitcase and a backpack as carryon but the Skytrain stairwell is a bit farther than I want to deal with.

How far is EVA (which is at the far end of the departures terminal from the auto entrance) from Skytrain's BKK terminal?

During my days in BKK in October, I might just take the train to BKK just to check it out with no luggage. But I only have a few days in the city so I am not sure.
