Gerry Rafferty Baker street stuck in the middle Died last night

Great memories of him in the the seventies and the music he made, including the

classic`s that Macky listed, I was only playing his Night Owl album last week at New Year.

Another sad early death. RIP

Baker Street has one of the great riffs of all music. And I've often wondered what it must have been like to be Rafferty and have to do that riff every night, every single night for all of his life, over and over and over - plus hundreds and hundreds of rehearsals.

He had several fabulous songs - and he played them, and pretty well only them, every single night of his life.

Apparently, he didn't play the sax solo on Baker Street. It was played by a guy called Raphael Ravenscroft. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker_Street_(song)

As to "Resting in Peace", that would be more than he did when he was living. It seems he was a sad, obnoxious alcoholic - see various obituaries such as this one http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/jan/0...fferty-obituary

Yes, it was his riff entirely, and he recorded it himself on the demo. Obviously, he couldn't play four instruments at the same time at shows and indeed, he did not play the sax on the released version we all hear. He was by all accounts a dreadful alcoholic and his "long illness" seems to have been spent pretty much without a liver.

Just read a great description of that riff, heh: Ba baba baba Booey

Could be much much worse... imagine being Don McLean playing THAT fucking song every night!

At the end of the day, a great song/songs can set you up for life.

Beats the hell out of packing shelves.

Yes and yes. I'll say one thing for Rafferty and McLean - they didn't HAVE to go to work every effing day and do the same thing all over again. I presume, with the money they had, they actually, truly enjoyed it - otherwise why do it? And good for them to be dedicated like that.

Agree Joe... must be mindnumbing but unless you are a band with a huge rep or just can afford to tour a few months of the year, thats the way the music biz is.

The good money is writing hits for other people. The cheques keep rolling in.

Plan B is to get long stint in Vegas or the like.

Same result though... repetition every night.

Mind you, 3 hours on stage then 21 hours to yourself doesnt sound that tough.

If only I had talent?

Thanks for the songs Gerry. RIP!

So he never did give up the booze and the one-night stand?

Not a stretch to say he was a musical genius. Great voice, wrote several really good songs, knew how to orchestrate and mix, and could play an instrument or two. Rafferty had such a smooth, clean sound. Unfortunately, like many "geniuses", he was also tormented. How many of us wish we had one-tenth of his talent?

Hi,

None of us are perfect. I loved his songs and can overlook his faults.

It's just as well you (impersonal) don't have to consider someone's personality when listening to their music. I still love listening to Gary Glitter! :whistling:
